ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | Akufo-Addo to Meet Buhari to Defuse Diplomatic Tension | The Ghanaian government has refuted accusations by the Federal Government of intimidation and maltreatment of Nigerian citizens in Ghana. It also stated that President Nana Akufo- Addo has made overtures to President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the tension between the two biggest West African economies over alleged attacks on Nigerians in Ghana. Ghana’s Minister of Information, Mr. Endkojo Nkrumah, said in a statement on Sunday, August 30, that Ghana remained committed to the maintenance of warm relations with all sister nations, particularly with Nigeria, and would proceed to resolve matters that could sour relations between the two countries. Nkrumah decried a statement by Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, accusing Ghana of persecuting Nigerians. He described it as a clear departure from the manner in which officials of the two countries have related in the past. According to him, “The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, who values very much his excellent relations with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will engage President Buhari with a view to developing immediately a framework for validating claims of ill-treatment of citizens of either country and ensure citizens enjoy the full exercise of their rights, while respecting the sovereignty and laws of both countries. Ghana and Nigeria, as they have been doing, must continue to work together for a successful West Africa." Nkrumah also stated that, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the other hand, is on record to have taken a number of steps in recent months, in pursuit of her national interests, which have gravely affected other countries in the region. These include the closure of Nigeria’s Seme-Krake border from August 2019 to date and the issuance of executive orders by Nigeria’s presidency, preventing foreigners from getting jobs which Nigerians can do, to mention a few. Ghana and other West African countries continue to believe redress to even actions like these can be sought diplomatically, without resort to media statements and related activities that have the potential to aggravate further the situation.” | Nigeria, Ghana | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/akufo-addo-to-meet-buhari-to-defuse-diplomatic-tension/ | 13 |
ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | IGP: Politicians Arming Thugs Ahead of Edo, Ondo Governorship Polls | The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has raised alarm that politicians in Edo and Ondo States are arming thugs ahead of the governorship polls scheduled for September 19 and October 10, respectively. He has, therefore, ordered the commissioners of police in both States to rejig their security system to forestall a possible breach of the peace during the elections. The directive, according to a statement released on Sunday, August 30 by Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, came against the backdrop of security reports that politicians in the two States are planning to foment trouble on Election Day, as they are arming thugs to be deployed to rig the polls. The IGP, therefore, warned the politicians to conduct themselves properly, play by the rules and steer clear of tendencies capable of undermining the electoral process. However, the two major political parties in the two States, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have traded blame over the IGP’s allegations. IGP Adamu ordered the commissioners of police in the two States to rejig their preparations for the elections in order to accommodate and address the threats and emerging trends, as contained in the security reports. He noted that the force leadership was evolving customised security architecture to protect the people and ensure hitch-free elections. He assured Nigerians, particularly the people of Edo and Ondo States, that the police remained committed to protecting the sanctity of the ballot. | Edo and Ondo governorship Elections, Inspector General of Police | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/ig-politicians-arming-thugs-ahead-of-edo-ondo-gov-polls/ | 13 |
ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | Northern Elders Oppose Constitution Review | The Northern Elders' Forum (NEF) has faulted moves by the Senate to review the 1999 Constitution (as amended). NEF accused the federal lawmakers of spending huge amounts of money to fund the Constitution review process since 1999, without any meaningful impact on the lives of the people. Addressing journalists on Sunday, August 30 in Abuja, NEF’s Director of Publicity, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, advised the National Assembly to direct its energy and mandate towards convincing President Muhammadu Buhari to end the insurgency in the North-East and killings in most parts of the country. The Senate ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) had invited the public to submit memorandum to assist the “further alteration of the provisions of the constitution (as amended).” However, NEF queried the value of such efforts in the past, saying it is convinced that this repetitive initiative of the Senate is a predictable waste of time, resources and energy of the country and should not be supported by Nigerians. the body stated thus: “Nothing fundamental or of any value has come out of these grand schemes to exploit our collective desire to address our political and economic fundamentals. This National Assembly is also following suit and it should not be encouraged on this path. Nigeria’s future rests largely on its willingness to address major constraints to equity and justice, a functional structure, consistent good governance, security for all citizens, a credible electoral process, growing understanding between and among all groups and an economy that grows and narrows inequalities between and classes and regions." The group added that national goals cannot be achieved by a process that makes wasteful expenditure around false hopes, a routine. It added that, “The legislature and executive branches of government have large quantities of reviews, recommendations and reports from past attempts at amending the Constitutions." | Constitution Review, Northern Elders' Forum (NEF) | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/northern-elders-oppose-constitution-review/ | 13 |
DailyTrust Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | CISLAC, 38 Other CSOs Flay Suspension Of Reps’ Activities | The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and 38 other Civil Society Organsisations (CSOs) have faulted the National Assembly over the suspension of committee activities and other legislative activities by the House of Representatives. The CSOs, in a jointly signed statement on Sunday, August 30 stated thus: “We dare say that even if this decision was taken with good intentions, it’s ill-advised, ill-timed and unhelpful as it fuels all forms of conspiracy theories and interpretation of collusion and attempt to cover up fraud, especially given that the National Assembly is already plagued by a lack of credibility or public trust.” Reacting to the statement, the House Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, in a text message to our correspondent, explained: “As a body of principal officers, we met and resolved that largely due to the present global health crisis of COVID-19 and lack of necessary protocol arrangements in place at the National Assembly, we needed to suspend committee programmes and activities till we resume when perhaps steps might have been taken to address such challenges.” | National Assembly, CISLAC | https://dailytrust.com/cislac-38-other-csos-flay-suspension-of-reps-activities | 13 |

ThisDayLive Online | Thursday, August 27, 2020 | PDP Berates Buhari over Alleged Empty Agenda for Next Three Years | The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday, August 26 berated President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged attempts by his handlers to cover the failures of his administration by rolling out another round of ‘empty promises and blank agenda’ to members of the international community. According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, “It is embarrassing that after five years in office, President Buhari is still in campaign mood, reeling out empty promises at a time other world leaders are showcasing their achievements, a development that further confirms that his administration has nothing to show in the last five years. The PDP recalled that President Buhari and the APC had promised to pay N5,000 monthly allowance to indigent Nigerians; provide massive employment, free houses; monthly allowances to discharged Corps Members; reduction in price of fuel; revamp the refineries; bring the dollar to the same value as the naira, and other bogus promises “which have today become streams of mirage.” The spokesman of the PDP stated that on assumption of office, President Buhari reduced the litany of promises to three cardinal undertakings of ending insurgency and insecurity, fighting corruption, and improving on the economy. However, the PDP said it is no longer news that President Buhari has failed in all the three undertakings to Nigerians. Meanwhile, the APC has stated that the country is on the right trajectory of growth and development under Buhari’s government. ThisDayLive Online | Thursday, August 27, 2020 | Conclude Criminal Cases in One Year, Buhari Urges Judiciary | President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, AUgust 26 decried what he described as the “terribly slow pace” of justice administration in Nigeria and proposed that criminal cases from the high court to the Supreme Court should be concluded within 12 months. On the other hand, civil cases should not last longer than 15 months. He stated this in a speech to declare open the Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) open. The 60th AGC, with the theme, ‘Stepping Forward,’ was NBA’s first virtual gathering.
