THIS DAY1ST SEPTEMBER 2025APC records landslide victory in the Rivers State Local Government Council electionsThe All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a landslide victory in the Rivers State local government elections held on August 30, 2025, winning 20 out of 23 chairmanship seats, as announced by Dr. Michael Odey, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). The APC dominated in councils such as Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, and Khana, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, and PHALGA. Notable results include Chidi Loyd (APC) with 114,380 votes in Emohua and Gift Worlu (PDP) with 328,823 votes in Obio/Akpor.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, condemned the election as an “awful absurdity and a travesty to the very notion of elective democracy,” criticizing the APC-led process as a move by an “occupation government” to gain political advantage. He urged opposition parties to reject the results, warning of a “dangerous curve” under President Bola Tinubu’s regime. In contrast, PDP’s Legal Adviser in Rivers, Okachi Ordu, praised the election as “seamless and rancour-free,” describing it as the “freest and fairest” in the state’s history and a step toward peace. Former Deputy Speaker Chibudom Nwuche, an election observer, also commended RSIEC for a peaceful and credible process, noting the absence of violence and high voter turnout.

THIS DAY1ST SEPTEMBER 2025Enugu East unites across party lines to endorse Governor Peter Mbah as sole candidate for the Enugu State 2027 Governorship ElectionLeaders and residents of Enugu East Senatorial District, spanning various political affiliations, have unanimously endorsed Governor Peter Mbah as their sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State. This decision was formalized in a communique titled “One Good Turn Deserves Another” issued after a townhall meeting at the International Conference Centre in Enugu on Sunday. The communique emphasized that their support for Mbah transcends party lines, with the people declaring, “Our political party is Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a performing governor,” who has demonstrated the ability to transform Enugu State. The motion for Mbah’s adoption was moved by Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate, who likened his change of stance to the biblical conversion of Saul to Paul, pledging to ensure Mbah’s re-election.

Former APC state chairman Dr. Ben Nwoye and others, including political veteran Deacon Ogbodo, praised Mbah’s transformative leadership, citing achievements like enhanced security, construction of 260 Smart Green Schools and 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, the launch of Enugu Air, 100 CNG Mass Transit buses, and extensive road projects. The district urged other senatorial zones to reciprocate past political support by backing Mbah in 2027, warning that opposing him would be a futile expense.

THIS DAY1ST SEPTEMBER 2025No Crisis in the Chamber: House of Representatives quashes rumours of revolt against Honorable Tajudeen AbbasThe House of Representatives has firmly denied reports suggesting a brewing rebellion against Speaker Hon. Abbas Tajudeen. A national newspaper claimed lawmakers were preparing for a confrontation when the House reconvenes on September 23, 2025. However, House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi dismissed the report, stating that the House remains united under Abbas’s leadership.

Rotimi criticized the newspaper for misrepresenting informal WhatsApp conversations as official caucus positions. He emphasized that while members are free to express opinions, such remarks do not equate to formal resolutions. The House, comprising 360 diverse members, continues to operate through established parliamentary procedures and consensus-building.

He also addressed concerns about delayed contractor payments, clarifying that the issue is national and not unique to constituency projects. The House leadership has been actively engaging the Ministry of Finance to resolve outstanding obligations. Rotimi reaffirmed the importance of constituency projects under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and urged that fiscal realities be considered when evaluating such concerns.

THIS DAY1ST SEPTEMBER 2025PDP’s Kamorudeen Ajisafe criticises FG over withheld Osun LG funds, calls it ‘offence against humanity’Kamorudeen Ajisafe, the South West Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized the federal government for allegedly withholding local government allocations meant for Osun State councils. He described the action as an “offence against humanity” and accused the government of politicizing access to public funds, thereby depriving citizens of their rights to welfare.

Ajisafe expressed disappointment that President Bola Tinubu has not reciprocated Governor Ademola Adeleke’s support, despite Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu’s second term. He praised Adeleke’s financial management, noting that the governor has continued to fund state projects, pay workers’ outstanding salaries, and support pensioners—even without access to LG funds. Ajisafe also highlighted Adeleke’s personal sacrifices, such as refusing security votes and using private family resources for official travel.

He concluded by calling for national accountability and fairness, emphasizing that political differences should not hinder citizens’ access to development funds.

DAILY TRUST1ST SEPTEMBER 2025ADC faces internal strife as INEC stalls recognition of emerging coalition leadershipCrisis brews over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in recognizing the new leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), now led by former Senate President David Mark and former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola. The leadership emerged from a powerful opposition coalition formed in July 2025, which includes political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, aiming to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.

Despite the coalition’s formal adoption of ADC and submission of leadership documents, INEC has yet to update its website to reflect the new National Working Committee (NWC), sparking concern among party members and supporters. ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, insists the delay is purely administrative and will be resolved soon.

However, internal dissent has surfaced. Former ADC presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu and ex-governorship candidate Nafiu Bala have rejected Mark’s leadership, calling it illegitimate and imposed. Bala even declared himself interim chairman, citing Nwosu’s resignation. In response, Ralph Nwosu dismissed the crisis as sabotage by detractors allegedly linked to the Presidential Villa, and urged focus on governance and electoral integrity.

The ADC leadership maintains that it followed due process and is now focused on consolidating its strategy for 2027, despite the ongoing recognition tussle and internal backlash.

DAILY TRUST2ND SEPTEMBER 2025PDP inaugurates Convention Committee despite Wike’s warning over internal disputesThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to inaugurate its 2025 National Convention Organising Committee today, with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as chairman, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as vice chairman, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as secretary. The 110-member committee will oversee preparations for the party’s elective convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

However, internal tensions threaten to overshadow the process. Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, a PDP member serving in the APC-led federal government, has warned that unresolved disputes, particularly the rejection of the South-South zonal congress conducted by his allies could derail the convention. Wike emphasized that the venue is not the issue, but rather the unresolved grievances leading up to the event.

He cautioned that unless the party addresses these concerns to the satisfaction of his camp, the convention may not hold. While acknowledging some efforts by the PDP to resolve disputes in the South-East and Ebonyi State, Wike insisted that only genuine reconciliation would ensure the convention’s success.

DAILY TRUST2ND SEPTEMBER 2025AMAC leadership crisis escalates as Yare declares his impeachment ‘null and void’ as APC Councillors elect new SpeakerThe Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory is facing a leadership crisis following the impeachment of Speaker Matthew Yare. On Monday, eight councilors who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) convened a session led by Deputy Speaker Tony Onoja to remove Yare, a loyalist of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They subsequently elected Ibrahim Jankaro of Kabusa Ward, an APC member, as the new speaker.

The political shift follows the defection of AMAC Chairman Christopher Zakka Maikalangu from PDP to APC, bringing thousands of supporters and lobbying most councilors to follow suit. With APC now holding a majority in the 12-member council, the new speaker argued that the impeachment was in line with democratic norms, stating that “the minority cannot lead the majority.”

However, Yare has rejected the move, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of council procedures. In a strongly worded statement, he declared the impeachment “null and void” and urged supporters to remain calm. He also criticized the timing of the action, which coincided with the mourning of FCT Head of Service, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, describing it as insensitive and provocative.

THIS DAY2ND SEPTEMBER 2025Kaduna State Government warns El-Rufai of legal consequences over alleged plot to destabilise the stateCrisis has erupted between the Kaduna State Government and former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, centering on allegations of political sabotage and mismanagement of security. The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu, accused El-Rufai of plotting to destabilize Kaduna and incite violence for political gain. He described El-Rufai as a “discredited former leader” unwilling to accept the progress made under Governor Uba Sani’s administration.

The government claims El-Rufai intensified his political activities following the defeat of his allies in the August 16 bye-elections and organized a meeting on August 30 that allegedly turned violent. It also condemned his televised remarks accusing federal and state authorities of bribing bandits, calling them “malicious lies” that undermine security efforts.

In a lengthy rebuttal, El-Rufai doubled down on his claims, accusing the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Kaduna government of politicizing national security and enabling payments to non-state actors across several northern states. He insisted that his statements reflect the frustrations of communities ravaged by banditry and terrorism, and criticized the government’s alleged suppression of opposition voices and manipulation of public narratives. El-Rufai also defended his right to political association and condemned the disruption of an African Democratic Congress (ADC) meeting, framing it as an attack on constitutional freedoms. He urged authorities to focus on solving insecurity rather than silencing dissent.

The Kaduna government responded with a warning that it would take decisive legal action against any attempt to destabilize the state, asserting that Kaduna “belongs to the future, not to the ruins of the past.”

He praised the peaceful conduct of the August 30 elections and commended the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for delivering a credible process.

The administrator tasked the chairmen with prioritizing peace and security, strengthening local economies, and supporting ongoing biometric reforms for staff management. He also expressed gratitude to the outgoing administrators for their service during a turbulent period.

THE GUARDIAN3RD SEPTEMBER 2025Atiku warns of rising violence in the North-Central as ADC accuses President Tinubu of running an exclusionary governmentThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of being the “most divisive and nepotic government in the history of Nigeria,” alleging it manipulates infrastructure data to deflect criticism over nepotism and regional bias. In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC criticized the administration’s infrastructure report as reinforcing “suspicions about exclusionary governance” and exposing its “alarming comfort with misleading the public with fake news.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, further accused the Tinubu-led government of neglecting the North-Central region amid rising violence, noting that Kwara State has become a hotspot for banditry and kidnappings. Atiku highlighted over 10,000 deaths in northern states by May 2025, with Benue accounting for more than half, and criticized the APC for prioritizing political battles over security, alleging it uses “thugs, infiltrators, and hired hooligans” to disrupt opposition activities while security agencies remain complicit or inactive. THE GUARDIAN3RD SEPTEMBER 2025Rivers LG Poll: Labour Party Chairmanship candidates announce plans to challenge the election results on grounds of irregularitiesThe Labour Party (LP) chairmanship candidates in Rivers State, including Dienye Pepple, Miller Ngozi Chika, Fidelis Ikebuluwa, Charles Inko-Tarriah, and Prince Tonye Jeminimiema, have announced plans to challenge the August 30, 2025, local council elections through legal action, citing irregularities and breaches. They have instructed their legal teams to file petitions with the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) tribunal, asserting their “legal and moral right to challenge the irregularities and breaches that marred the poll.”

The candidates also rejected a statement by a “Coalition of Political Parties” about the election results, calling it misleading and emphasizing they were not consulted, stating, “We are neither members of the said coalition nor were we consulted, informed or in any manner involved in the decision-making process that produced its statement.” Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which won 20 of 23 chairmanship seats, expressed willingness to collaborate with suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara upon his expected return on September 18, 2025, after the state’s emergency rule ends. APC State Chairman Tony Okocha noted, however, that cooperation does not preclude criticizing the governor if he engages in “obnoxious acts and laws.”

THE GUARDIAN3RD SEPTEMBER 2025We are not cowards": PDP Governors defy Wike bloc and vow to proceed with the planned convention despite threatsTensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated as the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, dismissed threats by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his allies to derail the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Wike’s faction, including former governors Samuel Ortom, Ayodele Fayose, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, issued a communiqué demanding six conditions for the convention’s legitimacy, including fresh congresses in Anambra, Ebonyi, and the South-East, and recognition of the South-South Congress in Calabar. Bala Mohammed, visibly agitated, declared, “If anybody wants to form a faction of fools, we will allow him. We are not cowards,” rejecting Wike’s “rascality and impunity.”

The PDP inaugurated a 110-member National Convention Committee, chaired by Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who promised a “credible and better convention.” PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum emphasized restraint for party stability, stating, “At critical moments, I chose restraint, not out of weakness, but as a conscious sacrifice.” Chief Olabode George dismissed engaging Wike, suggesting his actions aim to factionalize the PDP for APC negotiations, and warned, “If he likes, let him go and organise his parallel convention.” The South-West PDP, through Kamourudeen Ajisafe and Dr. Eddy Olafeso, urged unity and adherence to the NEC’s decisions, warning that internal disputes, including over zoning, could weaken the party’s 2027 prospects.

DAILY TRUST3RD SEPTEMBER 2025PDP faces fierce chairmanship battle as North Central stakeholders reject zoning outcomeThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faces internal tensions following the adoption of its zoning committee’s report, which retained National Working Committee (NWC) positions in their respective regions, zoning the national chairmanship to the North and the presidential ticket to the South.

This has sparked a fierce contest for the chairmanship, with North Central stakeholders, led by figures like Alhaji Abdulrahman Takushara, demanding the position remain in their zone, citing the brief tenure of former chairman Iyorchia Ayu. Takushara argued, “The North Central still wants to retain the position of national chairman,” emphasizing the zone’s electoral strength and sacrifices. Potential North Central candidates include Samuel Ortom, Professor Jerry Gana, Philip Shaibu, and Kawu Baraje.

Meanwhile, a PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) member indicated the North West is favored to produce the next chairman, naming Ibrahim Shekarau, Ahmed Makarfi, and Tanimu Turaki as contenders. A Wike-led faction, including former governors, insisted the chairmanship stay in North Central, warning that ignoring the 2021 zoning formula could invalidate the November 15–16, 2025, convention. PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba defended the zoning, stating, “This party is not about individuals; it is about democracy and the Nigerian people.” Political analyst Dr. Abubakar Kari described the agitation as normal “horse-trading,” suggesting post-convention negotiations could resolve tensions.

DAILY TRUST3RD SEPTEMBER 2025AMAC Councillors rescind Speaker’s impeachment, demanding compliance with chamber rulesOn September 1, 2025, eight All Progressives Congress (APC) councilors in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Legislative Council impeached Speaker Mathew Danjuma Yare, of the Peoples Democratic Party, for failing to hold bi-monthly plenary sessions as mandated. They elected APC’s Jankaro Ibrahim from Kabusa Ward as the new speaker.

However, following stakeholder intervention, including from AMAC Chairman Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, the councilors withdrew the impeachment on September 2, 2025, as announced by Ibrahim at a press conference. Ibrahim stated, “We have withdrawn the impeachment of Dr. Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare on the grounds that he refused to adopt the orders of the chamber,” giving Yare a one-month ultimatum to comply with the council’s rules or face renewed impeachment.

Councillor Matthias Aliyu emphasized the decision was to maintain peace, noting, “We want the Abuja Municipal Area Council to be a peaceful place,” but reiterated the warning to Yare. The FCT PDP, through Publicity Secretary Josephine C. Itoyah Splendor, had earlier rejected the impeachment, affirming Yare as the legitimate speaker.

Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, has threatened legal action against the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC) over its guidelines for the November 8, 2025, local government elections, which the party deems unconstitutional.

El-Sudi criticized the TSIEC’s requirement for chairmanship aspirants to pay a non-refundable fee of N1 million, vice-chairmanship aspirants N500,000, and female vice-chairmanship aspirants N250,000, with male and female councillorship candidates paying N150,000 and N75,000, respectively, while persons with disabilities are exempt. He argued that these fees violate Supreme Court rulings and the Nigerian Constitution, describing them as “a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise opposition parties and their candidates.” He further urged Governor Agbu Kefas to intervene and have TSIEC remove the provisions, threatening court action if the commission does not comply.

THE GUARDIAN4TH SEPTEMBER 2025President Tinubu signals potential shift towards the establishment of State Police in NigeriaPresident Bola Tinubu has signaled a potential shift toward establishing state police in Nigeria, proposing collaboration with the National Assembly to create a framework ensuring local ownership and political neutrality. This statement was made during a meeting with the North-East Governors’ Forum, led by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, where Tinubu praised the region's progress in stabilization despite security challenges. The announcement marks a departure from years of hesitation on state policing, amid rising insecurity from banditry, Boko Haram, kidnapping, and farmer-herder clashes. Previous efforts, like former President Muhammadu Buhari’s unimplemented plan to recruit 10,000 police officers, failed to curb the crisis, which some attribute to ungoverned spaces and politicization of security issues.

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized the need for state control over security, claiming he could end banditry in two months if given authority over security agencies. He lamented, “I know where every bandit leader is… but I cannot order security operatives to act in time,” citing delays due to centralized control from Abuja. Lawal has supported security efforts with resources like 150 patrol vehicles and Community Protection Guards, despite lacking direct control. Similarly, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda prioritized security, establishing the Katsina Community Watch with vehicles and equipment, stating, “I could not imagine how this state could have been without this.”

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) urged a state of emergency in the North-West, citing inadequate security architecture and complicity through inaction, warning that “continued inaction could undermine Nigeria’s stability.” The National Economic Council (NEC), led by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, plans to finalize state police discussions in January 2025, with most states supporting the initiative to address local security challenges. However, opposition exists, with Buba Galadima warning that state police could “destroy democracy” if governors weaponize them. In contrast, groups like Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo support state police, arguing it aligns with federalism and could enhance local responsiveness, with safeguards to prevent abuse.

DAILY TRUST4TH SEPTEMBER 2025NEF calls on President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the North following the surge of insecurity in the regionThe Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Northern Nigeria due to escalating insecurity that threatens lives, economic stability, and national cohesion. In a communiqué, NEF spokesperson Prof. Abubakar Jiddere highlighted a “relentless wave of violent attacks, abductions, and killings,” criticizing the inadequate and sometimes complicit security architecture that leaves citizens vulnerable and erodes trust in government.

Specific incidents cited include the August 19 mosque attack in Unguwan Mantau Village, killing 27 worshippers, the execution of 35 abductees in Zamfara despite ransom payments, and deadly raids in Kaduna’s Kauru and Kudan LGAs. The NEF warned that inaction could lead to communities resorting to “self-help,” risking anarchy and regional instability. They proposed a multi-pronged approach, including declaring a state of emergency, deploying trained security forces, providing victim support, strengthening border control, and seeking international assistance.

The forum described the atrocities as potential “crimes against humanity” and vowed to engage stakeholders to secure relief and restore peace.

The large crowd marched along Yakubu Gowon Way to the PDP state secretariat, causing traffic disruptions while chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards and banners, many featuring Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate they endorsed for 2027.

They also expressed support for Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s second-term bid, praising his performance. Hon. Ninfa Ezekiel, leader of the North Central Support Groups for Dr. Gbenga Hashim for President, urged the PDP leadership to reconsider the zoning decision, stating, “This move may create perceptions of unfairness and undermine the party’s commitment to inclusivity and meritocracy.” Ezekiel emphasized the need for a level playing field to select leaders capable of tackling Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, while commending the National Working Committee under Umar Damagum for stabilizing the party ahead of the Ibadan national convention

THE GUARDIAN4TH SEPTEMBER 2025Federal Allocation: APC urges the National Assembly to grant Lagos State special status over economic contributionsThe All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, through its spokesperson Seye Oladejo, has urged the National Assembly to grant Lagos a special status due to its pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy, contributing over 20% of the nation’s GDP, 55% of VAT revenue, 65% of corporate headquarters, and 70% of maritime imports and logistics. Oladejo emphasized that Lagos, described as the “engine room of the federation,” receives only 3.48% of federal allocation in 2024 despite generating over a third of non-oil revenue, arguing that the request is based on logic, data, and national interest, not partisanship. He called Lagos a “national asset” and a federating hub for all Nigerians.

Similarly, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, defended federal investments in Lagos, calling it a “no-man’s land” and Nigeria’s economic pride. Speaking on Arise Television, Bwala highlighted Lagos’s cosmopolitan nature, noting that major businesses, including those of northerners like Africa’s richest man, are based there, justifying the N3.9 trillion in federal projects

THIS DAY4TH SEPTEMBER 2025ADC warns against reducing a national monument to a private gesture, calls on the Federal Government to take responsibility for the completion of the National LibraryThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Federal Government to take immediate responsibility for completing the long-abandoned National Library of Nigeria project in Abuja, emphasizing that it should not rely on private charity.

Responding to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s announcement to support the library’s completion as part of her 65th birthday celebrations on September 21, 2025, the ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, appreciated her gesture but insisted that the library, established by an Act of Parliament in 1964, is a national institution and “cannot, and must not, be reduced to the status of a personal pet project.”

The ADC stressed that the library, as “the custodian of Nigeria’s collective memory and intellectual heritage,” requires transparent and sustainable national funding, not goodwill donations. Abdullahi noted that funding was previously shifted to TETFUND, resulting in no direct budgetary allocations for 2024 and 2025, and urged the First Lady to influence President Tinubu for “presidential attention” through budgetary provisions, stating, “A nation’s intellectual heritage cannot rest on acts of benevolence.”

DAILY TRUST8TH SEPTEMBER, 2025Governor Adeleke quells PDP rift in Ife, calls for unity ahead of the 2026 governorship electionOsun State Governor Ademola Adeleke successfully resolved internal conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ife Federal Constituency, urging stakeholders to remain vigilant against opposition-driven division ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The reconciliation meeting, attended by key figures including Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, Deputy Senate Minority Leader Senator Lere Oyewumi, State PDP Chairman Hon Sunday Bisi, and other party leaders, addressed a prior vote of no confidence against Adewusi and former PDP National Secretary Professor Wale Oladipo for alleged anti-party activities. Some PDP leaders had even called for Adewusi’s replacement, citing lack of support in Ife. Adeleke attributed the discord to a communication gap and external efforts to destabilize the party, stating, “Throughout this meeting today, I see Ile Ife PDP very truly united. I listened to all the leaders here and I clearly see a communication gap among the leaders. There is also a strong sign of an outsider plot to divide Ife PDP.” He encouraged unity and continued work, noting, “Now that we have seen the root of the matter, I charge us to get back to work. Our administration has done so much for Ife land and we are still going to do more.” Hon Sunday Bisi confirmed the resolution, saying, “We are glad that all issues have been ironed out,” and called for resumed party mobilization while discouraging actions that could be seen as anti-party.

THE GUARDIAN8TH SEPTEMBER, 2025#NigeriaDecides2027: APC dismisses Tambuwal’s claim of a “national consensus” to unseat President Tinubu as 2027 mobilisation beginsThe Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly dismissed former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal's assertion of a "national consensus" to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office in 2027, labeling it as a futile effort to distort the reality of widespread public support for the president. APC spokesman Oluseye Oladejo, speaking on Sunday, emphasized that Nigerians decisively backed Tinubu during the 2023 elections and continue to endorse his administration's focus on performance, including economic stabilization measures and major infrastructure initiatives. Oladejo urged Tambuwal to address lingering allegations from his governorship in Sokoto, attributing the opposition's failure to unite as stemming from clashing ambitions, divergent interests, and self-interested leaders.

In a related development, APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary Durosinmi Meseko declared over the weekend in Lokoja, Kogi State, that President Tinubu's re-election in 2027 is assured and will be effortless, citing the president's exceptional track record. Meseko made the remarks after a stakeholders' meeting in Bunu District of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, aimed at mobilizing residents for the ongoing voter registration drive and advocating for local infrastructure improvements. He highlighted Tinubu's socio-economic and security reforms, noting that the president inherited a "comatose" economy now heading toward prosperity, and encouraged citizens to trust the APC-led government despite current hardships, assuring that welfare enhancements are imminent. Meseko pointed to the APC's dominant margins in recent by-elections as a preview of 2027 success, reiterating that voters should register to wield their power.

Separately, another APC chieftain, Okechukwu, speaking yesterday to former members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Eke, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, clarified that the true national consensus revolves around rotating the presidency from North to South, not ousting Tinubu. Reacting to similar claims from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he dismissed them as mere fantasies and mockingly referred to PDP defectors to the ADC as "Internal Displaced Politicians (IDP)," advising them to return and repair the PDP they had undermined.

DAILY TRUST8TH SEPTEMBER, 2025ADC accuses APC of intimidation and violence amid rising popularity ahead of the 2027 general electionsThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating violent attacks and intimidation against its members due to fears of the ADC's growing popularity ahead of the 2027 elections. Recent incidents include thugs disrupting an ADC meeting in Kaduna and attacking a church venue in Lagos during the defection of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, former Labour Party governorship candidate. ADC’s Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi condemned the APC’s “authoritarian temper,” citing a pattern of assaults in Edo, Kogi, Niger, Kaduna, and Kebbi, and warned, “We will not fold our arms while our leaders are attacked.” He called the church attack a “new low,” questioning if the APC is a “terrorist organisation.”

In response, APC National Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim rejected the accusations, insisting the ruling party was not involved in the disruptions and emphasizing that the ADC poses no threat. He added that the APC neither engages in nor condones violence in any form.

CHANNELS TV8TH SEPTEMBER, 2025Court commences hearing on Osun State Government’s suit against CBN and the AGF over alleged LG fund diversionOn Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, heard a suit filed by the Osun State Government against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF). The case centers on the disbursement of local government allocations, with the state accusing the defendants of plotting to divert these funds into private accounts controlled by impersonators posing as government officials, bypassing designated accounting officers.

The Osun government contends this would violate public finance regulations and the Nigerian Constitution, while also undermining ongoing Supreme Court proceedings on local government fund administration in the state. The dispute originates from political tensions between All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elected officials, exacerbated by conflicting court rulings on the legitimacy of Osun's October 2022 local government elections. Parties appeared in court but no further proceedings were detailed in the hearing.

THE GUARDIAN9TH SEPTEMBER 2025PDP criticises the National Assembly over its continuous approval of President Tinubu's loan requests amid Nigeria's growing debt crisisThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio of hypocrisy for criticizing Nigeria’s rising debt while approving President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing requests, which have pushed the nation’s debt to N149.39 trillion ($97 billion) in Q1 2025, up from N121.7 trillion the previous year. PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor called Abbas and Akpabio complicit in Nigeria’s debt crisis, stating, “Tajudeen Abbas cannot, on one hand, approve loans for President Tinubu, and on the other hand, complain that the debt ceiling has been shattered.” He urged Abbas to resign for lacking the “moral spine” to oppose excessive borrowing, contrasting the current “rubber stamp” legislature with the more resistant National Assembly under former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Abbas, speaking at the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees (WAAPAC) conference, warned that Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio of 52% exceeds the legal 40% limit, signaling a fiscal crisis. He emphasized the need for stronger parliamentary oversight, saying, “Our oversight must also be people-driven. Major borrowing proposals should be subject to public hearings, and simplified debt reports must be made available to the public.” However, Finance Minister Wale Edun countered that Tinubu’s reforms, including subsidy removal and tax reforms, have improved fiscal sustainability, with a debt service-to-revenue ratio of 60% in 2024 and a debt-to-GDP ratio of 38.8%, which he called “comfortable.” Edun stated, “Nigeria is turning the corner. The reforms are delivering measurable impact.”

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) also criticized the government’s borrowing. CUPP’s Peter Ameh urged Abbas to ensure responsible borrowing, while HURIWA’s Emmanuel Onwubiko called Tinubu’s claim of meeting 2025 revenue targets contradictory, given new borrowing plans. Onwubiko remarked, “How can you say in the morning that you have overshot the revenue target for the year but in the evening announce that you will be borrowing excessively?” A Cardinalstone report projects Nigeria’s debt could reach N187.79 trillion by year-end 2025, raising concerns about sustainability.

Of these, 51.76% were female, and 64.65% (2,291,809) were youths aged 18–34, with students comprising 24.89% (882,441). Additionally, 288,614 completed registrations (online and in-person) were recorded by September 4, with 54.04% female and 74.64% (215,414) aged 18–34, of which 39.55% (114,150) were students. INEC’s Sam Olumekun emphasized that detailed data is available on INEC’s platforms and warned that registering anyone under 18 is illegal.

In a separate development, former Senator and 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate Athan Nneji Achonu called for constitutional and economic reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking in Abuja, he advocated for constitutional zoning of the Presidency to include the South-East and North-East, legalizing cannabis cultivation as “Nigeria’s green gold” for economic growth, and channeling more funds to local councils with accountability measures. THE GUARDIAN9TH SEPTEMBER 2025Court adjourns hearing on Osun State Government’s suit against CBN and the AGF to 22nd September 2025On September 8, 2025, the Osun State Government challenged the transfer of a suit from the Federal High Court's Osogbo Division to the Abuja Division before Justice Emeka Nwite, a vacation judge. The suit, filed by Osun's Attorney General Oluwole Jimi-Bada against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Accountant General of the Federation, and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), seeks to restrain the CBN from opening accounts or disbursing local government funds to sacked APC-elected chairmen and councillors from the 2022 elections, whose removal was upheld by the court and Court of Appeal.

Represented by Musibau Adetunbi, SAN, Osun argued the Abuja court lacks jurisdiction and sought to set aside Chief Judge Justice John Tsoho's August 21 fiat for the transfer and vacation hearing, requesting the case be returned to Osogbo. Osun also filed for discontinuance against the AGF, citing a new Supreme Court suit (SC/CV/773/2025) over the AGF's alleged intent to release funds to the sacked officials, and a stay pending its outcome. CBN's counsel, Dr. Muritala Abdulrasheed, SAN, countered that the AGF requested the transfer for expeditious hearing, filing seven processes against Osun's motions, while AGF's Akin Olujinmi, SAN, disputed service of the discontinuance notice. THIS DAY10TH SEPTEMBER 2025Senate’s continued ban on Senator Natasha ignites uproar as PDP accuses the Akpabio-led legislature of democratic subversionThe National Assembly has barred Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming her legislative duties despite her six-month suspension ending on September 4, 2025. The decision hinges on a pending appeal at the Court of Appeal, following her suspension on March 6, 2025, for alleged misconduct.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the move, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Senate, under Senate President Godswill Akpabio, of undermining democracy and the rights of Kogi Central constituents. The Federal High Court previously ruled the suspension unconstitutional, but an appeal by Akpabio has delayed her reinstatement.

Akpoti-Uduaghan insists her suspension has lapsed and her return is a constitutional right, while the National Assembly maintains that no action can be taken until the court rules. The PDP further criticized the action as part of broader efforts to suppress opposition and women’s voices, calling for international condemnation and urging the senator to prepare to resume her duties.

Represented by Deputy National Chairman (South) Emma Eneukwu, Yilwatda highlighted recent defections of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno from the PDP as evidence of Tinubu's appeal, likening the president to a "lion" unperturbed by opposition "barking dogs." The meeting endorsed Tinubu as the party's sole presidential candidate for 2027, with former Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva affirming the state chapter's unity.

However, key figures like Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri and 2019 governorship candidate David Lyon were absent, underscoring ongoing internal wrangling, including Lokpobiri's prior suspension (later reversed) amid leadership rivalries with Sylva.

Separately, Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, during a visit to Ogun State's Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Abeokuta, stated that Nigerian women would deliver a resounding victory for Tinubu in 2027, praising his Renewed Hope Agenda for embedding women's empowerment through social impact programs aimed at restoring dignity, expanding opportunities, and supporting vulnerable groups. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, noted that political parties and candidates are flouting the Electoral Act by campaigning before the official timetable is released, making it difficult to monitor campaign financing and ensure fairness. He lamented that the law lacks strong sanctions for early campaigns.

Prof. Abdullahi Zuru of The Electoral Institute highlighted how politicians now use cultural events, religious gatherings, and social media to indirectly campaign, distorting the democratic process and distracting from governance.

Former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, described premature campaigns as a serious threat to electoral integrity. He warned that such campaigns give unfair advantage to incumbents, fuel political tensions, and undermine public trust. Jega called for legal reforms, stronger penalties, and the establishment of an Elections Offences Commission to address violations.

Leaders of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement (GHSM) declared that zoning has become outdated and divisive.

Similar resistance has emerged in Oyo, Ondo, Plateau, Kano, and the FCT, with party members pushing back against what they call “imposition” by the national leadership.

The plaintiffs are seeking court interpretation on the authentic APC leadership in Rivers, citing a previous judgment that reinstated Beke as state chairman, and are asking the court to nullify the primaries and elections conducted under Okocha’s camp. They also want RSIEC to declare them the rightful winners of the August 30 council polls.

RSIEC has stated it did not monitor Beke’s primaries and only recognised Okocha’s faction. This dispute follows an earlier 2024 ruling by Justice Sika Aprioku, which nullified Okocha’s caretaker committee and upheld Beke’s leadership until the end of his four-year term.

PDP National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade emphasized on Arise TV that no internal party policy can override constitutional provisions, allowing all citizens to show interest regardless of zoning. This decision vindicates the long-standing position of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a technocrat, businessman, and potential PDP aspirant, who has criticized zoning as undemocratic and exclusionary through his Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement. Supporters, including South-West Coordinator Abass Olaniyi, hailed it as a "major victory for democracy" and a boost for Olawepo-Hashim's unifying vision of competence and national renewal, positioning him strongly for a potential run.

Additionally, the five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, dismissed appeals filed by other candidates, including Bamidele Akingboye of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Ogunfeyimi Kolawole of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Counsel for Akingboye informed the court of his intention to withdraw the appeal due to the death of the appellant. The court did not object to the withdrawal.

Earlier, opposition parties had approached the tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Akure, challenging Aiyedatiwa’s victory, but those efforts have now been resolved, clearing the way for Aiyedatiwa’s continued leadership of Ondo State.

DAILY TRUST18TH SEPTEMBER 2025Governor Adeleke once again, refutes defection rumours as he reaffirms his loyalty to the PDPOsun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has once again dismissed rumors suggesting he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor described the report as false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt by political opponents to undermine his growing popularity and confuse the public.

This comes after earlier speculation that Adeleke was planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a claim he had also publicly denied.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, Adeleke declared his intention to seek re-election in the 2026 Osun governorship election on the PDP platform, and stated that mobilization efforts are already underway to ensure victory. He urged the public to disregard the fake report, emphasizing that his focus remains on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Osun State who elected him nearly three years ago.

THIS DAY19TH SEPTEMBER 2025Osun PDP demand probe into alleged judicial manipulation over LG funds caseThe Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to investigate two controversial letters allegedly issued from his office regarding a case tied to the ongoing local government fund crisis in the state. According to the PDP, the letters dated August 21 and September 2, 2025 purportedly directed that a vacation judge continue hearing the case substantively, even after the vacation period, without any formal application from the parties involved.

The PDP alleges that the letters were not signed by judicial officers but rather by a Special Assistant to the Chief Judge and an unidentified person, which it claims constitutes an abuse of judicial process. The party suspects the second letter may have been backdated to serve political interests and argues that such administrative actions amount to unlawful interference in judicial proceedings.

Further, the PDP accuses the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) of manipulating the judiciary to favor ousted APC local government officials, despite a subsisting court judgment in favor of the PDP. The party insists that the case must be returned to the Osogbo Division of the Federal High Court, where it was originally filed, and warns that continued backdoor handling of judicial matters poses a grave threat to judicial independence and the rule of law.

DAILY TRUST19TH SEPTEMBER 2025Wike defends Fubara’s delay in resuming office, says no law mandates immediate return after emergency rule endsFollowing the end of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, though officially reinstated, failed to resume office as expected on Thursday, raising questions about his whereabouts. President Bola Tinubu had declared the emergency on March 18 due to the political crisis between Fubara and loyalists of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. During the period, governance was handled by a sole administrator, former Naval Chief Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.

Despite the return to democratic rule and the resumption of plenary by the State House of Assembly, neither Fubara nor his deputy appeared publicly. Sources claim the governor deliberately stayed away to avoid legitimizing the emergency rule and is currently not in Nigeria. His supporters, who gathered at the Government House expecting his return, were left disappointed.

While Wike insisted there’s no law requiring Fubara to resume immediately and confirmed they had spoken, the governor’s aides declined to comment on his location. Meanwhile, the State Assembly has asked Fubara to submit a list of commissioner-nominees and present a new budget. It also resolved to probe financial activities under the sole administrator during the emergency period.

DAILY TRUST19TH SEPTEMBER 2025#NigeriaDecides2027: APC boasts of nationwide strength, dismisses opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general electionsThe National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has declared that the ruling party is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections and remains confident of sweeping victories at all levels. Speaking on Jay FM in Jos, Yilwatda asserted that no political force can stop the APC from winning, dismissing the opposition as fragmented and regionally confined.

In response to opposition criticism of President Tinubu’s administration over issues like poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, Yilwatda insisted those claims lack substance. He highlighted recent APC successes in by-elections across 12 states as evidence of the party’s growing strength, and dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party system.

The APC chairman also blamed the internal crises plaguing opposition parties on their own leadership failures, describing their coalitions as weak alliances doomed to collapse. He credited Tinubu’s economic policies for improving state finances and attracting defectors from opposition ranks.

CHANNELS TV19TH SEPTEMBER 2025High Court issues interim restraining order to EDSIEC and the Edo State government, halting the planned LG Bye-elections On September 16, 2025, Justice Mary E. Itsueli of the Edo State High Court in Benin City issued an interim restraining order against the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) and the state government, halting planned by-elections for councillorship seats in 59 wards across the state.

The order followed an ex-parte motion filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in suit B/247M/2025, seeking judicial review of EDSIEC's decision to declare the seats vacant. The PDP, represented by counsels Oluwole Osaze Uzzi, Michael Ekwemuka, and P. W. Akwuen, argued that the councillors' tenures are valid until September 2026, rendering the by-elections unlawful.

The court granted leave for judicial review, restrained the respondents from proceeding with the elections pending a full hearing, and referred the matter to the Chief Judge for reassignment to a regular court, with a return date of September 30, 2025. The Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is named as a respondent.

DAILY TRUST23RD SEPTEMBER 2025Osun State challenges Federal Court’s jurisdiction in Local Government funds dispute, seeks transfer of suit from Abuja to OsogboA Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled September 29, 2025, to hear a motion by the Osun State Government challenging the court’s jurisdiction in a case concerning the payment of local government funds to candidates elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the matter after hearing arguments, prioritizing the issue of jurisdiction. The Osun State Government had previously withdrawn the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) as a defendant in the suit. The state argued that the case should be transferred back to Osogbo, as the court’s vacation period ended on September 16, rendering the fiat for the AGF to hear the case during vacation invalid.

Osun’s counsel, Musibau Adetumbi (SAN), claimed the document signed by the chief judge’s personal assistant lacked legal authority. However, counsel for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation opposed the motion, alleging it was a tactic to delay the case.

Additionally, Osun State has filed a separate suit at the Supreme Court, challenging the AGF’s failure to comply with prior court rulings from November 30, 2022, and June 13, 2025, recognizing local government officials elected on February 22, 2025.

DAILY TRUST23RD SEPTEMBER 2025Push for Reserved Seats for Women in the Legislature gains momentum at the National Public HearingOn September 22, 2025, a national public hearing organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Nigeria advanced the push for special seats reserved for women in the National and State Assemblies. The bill, which passed its second reading on July 9, 2024, proposes creating one additional senatorial seat and one House seat per state and the Federal Capital Territory, exclusively for women, alongside three reserved seats in each state’s House of Assembly. These provisions, subject to review every 16 years, aim to address Nigeria’s low female representation, currently at 4.2% in the 10th National Assembly, among the lowest globally.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized the need for gender inclusion, noting that women hold less than 5% of parliamentary seats, an unacceptable figure for Nigeria’s ambitions. The bill also includes provisions for persons with disabilities and a minimum threshold for women in ministerial appointments. International stakeholders, including the UK, EU, and UN, expressed strong support, highlighting the bill’s potential to enhance equitable governance and align with global gender equality goals, such as SDG 5. Women’s groups protested in Abuja, demanding passage of the bill to overcome financial and cultural barriers to political participation.

While supporters, including governance expert Dr. Sam Ogwuche, argue the bill corrects historical underrepresentation, critics like Associate Professor Lanre Sikiru Nurudeen call it undemocratic, suggesting cultural sensitization and party concessions as alternatives. Nigeria’s female representation has remained in single digits since 1999, lagging behind countries like Rwanda (63.8% women in parliament) and South Africa (46%). A previous attempt in 2022 failed due to insufficient votes. The bill now awaits a clause-by-clause vote in the National Assembly, requiring a two-thirds majority and approval from 24 state assemblies to become law.

The event, themed “The Role of PBOs in African Parliaments’ Fiscal Oversights: Contribution to the African 2063 Development Agenda,” addressed fiscal challenges across the continent. Tajudeen clarified recent media misrepresentations of his earlier remarks at the 11th West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees (WAAPAC) conference, where he highlighted Nigeria's debt-to-GDP ratio exceeding 52%—above the 40% statutory limit—and called for enhanced regional oversight on public borrowing to protect citizens' futures. He emphasized that the legislature backs "responsible and targeted borrowing" as a vital tool for funding essential infrastructure, driving economic growth, and aiding vulnerable groups, rather than opposing it outright.

Tajudeen also spotlighted Nigeria's annual $18 billion loss (about 3.8% of GDP) to financial crimes, part of Africa's broader $587 billion yearly drain from corruption, illicit flows, and inefficiencies. He urged stronger parliamentary fiscal oversight to curb these issues. AN-PBO Chairperson Prof. Dumisani Jantjies echoed concerns about Africa's economic fragility amid external shocks like volatile capital flows, trade disruptions, and climate change, stressing the need for robust PBO roles in sustainable development aligned with Agenda 2063.

Arraigned on June 30, 2025, on a six-count charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Mohammed Abubakar, under the Cybercrimes Prohibition, Prevention, etc (Amendment) Act 2024, the senator was granted bail, with the trial initially set to commence on this date.

The prosecution, led by David Kaswe, arrived prepared with a TV for witness testimony and the first witness present. However, defense counsel Ehiogie West-Idahosa (SAN) raised a preliminary objection challenging the court's jurisdiction, citing an alleged abuse of the Attorney General of the Federation's (AGF) prosecutorial powers—not the charges themselves. The defense also noted they had not been served with prosecution witness statements. Despite the prosecution's plea to proceed, Justice Umar prioritized the objection, adjourning the hearing to October 20, 2025, to determine its merits before advancing the trial.

The charges stem from statements Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly made on April 4, 2025, during a gathering in Ihima, Kogi State, and in a subsequent TV interview, where she claimed Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to kill her. These are accused of transmitting false information electronically to malign, incite, endanger lives, and breach public order.

Despite a September 16, 2025, ex parte order from Justice Mary Itsueli of the Edo State High Court restraining EDSIEC and the state government from proceeding prompted by a PDP motion the commission defiantly conducted the elections, with only APC candidates participating.

The PDP condemned the process as a "sham" and initiated contempt proceedings against EDSIEC, with a court return date set for September 30, 2025. Elected councillors arrived at EDSIEC's Benin City office as early as 7:00 a.m. to collect Certificates of Return, represented by Dr. Ikhuoriah Solomon, who urged them to represent constituents effectively.

The influx of new councillors triggered immediate political fallout, including impeachment notices served on some acting chairmen, leading to voluntary resignations by Esan West LGA Chairman Godsent Agboibo and Orhionmwon LGA Chairman Daniel Osariemen (who pledged to continue as a councillor). In Etsako East LGA, Acting Chairman Solomon Oghuma appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to halt the moves, claiming they aimed to sow party discord. The party is split into two rival factions: one led by the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, alongside PDP governors, and the other led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who is aligned with the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

The conflict revolves around which faction will control the party's structure after the convention and have influence over candidate selection for the 2027 general elections. The division became public when two conflicting letters regarding the conduct of congresses in Cross River and Plateau States were sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). While the National Working Committee (NWC), through Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, announced the postponement of the congresses on September 24, Anyanwu, in a counter letter dated September 26, insisted they would proceed as planned.

Professor Patrick Utomi’s shadow government "illegal and unconditional"
The Federal High Court has declared the formation of a "shadow government" by former presidential candidate Prof. Patrick Utomi as illegal and unconstitutional. Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the concept of a shadow cabinet is alien to the 1999 Constitution and Nigeria’s presidential system.

The ruling followed a suit filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which argued that Utomi’s actions, forming an alternative cabinet and policy team were an attempt to usurp executive powers, destabilise the country, and pose a threat to national security.

The court issued a perpetual injunction restraining Utomi and his associates from operating or promoting any such parallel government. The DSS accused Utomi of creating public confusion, undermining the legitimacy of the elected government, and violating constitutional provisions that vest authority solely in democratically elected institutions.
