Women representation suffers setback ahead 2019 general elections

There are concerns that the recent political parties primaries across Nigeria ahead of the 2019 general elections may see women representation suffer a setback.

In initial reports arising from the primaries of some of the major political parties, only a few women appear to have emerged as candidates. Indeed, there are concerns that even in some cases that women have held the positions, the recent primaries may have wrestled away the position from them.

Reports from the field indicate that factors such as money politics, violence and corrupt political party processes may have worked mostly against women running for elective positions.

Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) is currently reviewing reports being received on the outcome of the primaries and its effects on women, and it will shortly be reporting on this.
