Is Zamfara really Planning Local Council Elections in April?

News from Gusau, Zamfara State report the that State Government as planning to conduct Local Council elections in the 14 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the State. The State Commissioner for LGA, Alhaji Bello Dankade is reported to have told the Chairman of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission to prepare to conduct elections on Saturday, 27th April 2019. Speaking at an Election Stakeholders’ forum in Gusau on Monday, 15th April 2019, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Garba Muhammad appealed for co-operation of all stakeholders for a successful election. He also revealed that the Commission has recruited and trained adhoc staff for the exercise, as well as conveyed election materials to its Zonal, Local Government and Ward offices. Furthermore, a Committee has been set up for voter enlightenment and mobilisation across the State.

The State has reportedly been caught in a massive wave of insecurity and lawlessness perpetrated by bandits, who have turned the State into a massive field of killings, violence and lawlessness. The State Governor, who hardly resides in the State had also been reported to have called on the Federal Government to take over the affairs of the State, as the State Government has lost control of the State to bandits.
