INEC Slates Lagos House of Reps Poll for April 27; Stays Action on Imo North Senatorial Seat

On Wednesday, 17th April 2019, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed supplementary election in the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State for Saturday, 27th April 2019, following a declaration of the election conducted on 23rd February 2019 as inconclusive in line with the margin of lead principle. The declaration came after the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had granted an order on 7th March 2019, compelling INEC to declare the result of the election. The supplementary election will take place in 71 polling units and 18 voting points with a total of 43,660 registered voters. The incumbent Legislator representing the Constituency, Hon. Rita Orji who is also seeking re-election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed supplementary election, describing it as premeditated and illegal, stating that it goes against the court order, which requires INEC to release all collated results in the area.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 16th April 2019, INEC revealed that it has put all actions regarding the declaration of 23rd February and 9th March 2019 election results for the Imo North Senatorial District seat on hold, in compliance with an order of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on 9th April 2019. The Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Senator Ben Uwajumogu instituted a case with regard to the matter at the Federal High Court. It will be recalled that the election for the Senatorial seat was declared inconclusive as a result of violence and irregularities. INEC had also set up a Committee to conduct an investigation into the allegations surrounding the election in the area. The Commission in its most recent statement on the matter revealed that the Committee has completed the assignment and submitted its report.
