INEC holds discussions on Electoral Reforms

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is proposing 34 amendments to the Electoral Act, to enhance the electoral legal framework. Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, while speaking at the Commission’s ongoing retreat, stated that areas of review in the electoral process will include party primaries, pre-election and post-election matters. He also expressed hope that an Electoral Offences Commission and Tribunal will be established before the next major elections in Nigeria. The purpose of the retreat according to Yakubu, is to finalise the Commission’s proposal to the National Assembly for amendment of the electoral legal framework. Members of the Senate Committee on INEC and the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral matters and Political parties are expected to join the Commission at its week-long retreat. It will be recalled that President Buhari refused assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2018, which was passed by the 8th National Assembly.
