News emerged Tuesday, 19th February 2019, of invitation to the INEC National Commissioner for Operations and Logistics and four other staff of the Commission, for questioning. The reason for the invitations was unclear. Observers however speculate that this was connected to President Buhari’s statement that he would investigate reasons for the postponement by INEC, of the February 16 national elections. Understandably, reaction to the Department of State Services’ (DSS) invitation, was alarm. Stakeholders worried that the invitation less than three days to the date of the national elections could interfere with INEC’s preparations for the elections, with a possibility of threat to the constitutionally guaranteed independence of INEC. Reports also emerged later in the day, that the DSS invitation had been withdrawn. This may have prompted INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to state at a public briefing that no Commissioner or staff of the Commission was arrested nor interrogated by the Security Services.
