ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | Akufo-Addo to Meet Buhari to Defuse Diplomatic Tension | The Ghanaian government has refuted accusations by the Federal Government of intimidation and maltreatment of Nigerian citizens in Ghana. It also stated that President Nana Akufo- Addo has made overtures to President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the tension between the two biggest West African economies over alleged attacks on Nigerians in Ghana. Ghana’s Minister of Information, Mr. Endkojo Nkrumah, said in a statement on Sunday, August 30, that Ghana remained committed to the maintenance of warm relations with all sister nations, particularly with Nigeria, and would proceed to resolve matters that could sour relations between the two countries. Nkrumah decried a statement by Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, accusing Ghana of persecuting Nigerians. He described it as a clear departure from the manner in which officials of the two countries have related in the past. According to him, “The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, who values very much his excellent relations with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will engage President Buhari with a view to developing immediately a framework for validating claims of ill-treatment of citizens of either country and ensure citizens enjoy the full exercise of their rights, while respecting the sovereignty and laws of both countries. Ghana and Nigeria, as they have been doing, must continue to work together for a successful West Africa." Nkrumah also stated that, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the other hand, is on record to have taken a number of steps in recent months, in pursuit of her national interests, which have gravely affected other countries in the region. These include the closure of Nigeria’s Seme-Krake border from August 2019 to date and the issuance of executive orders by Nigeria’s presidency, preventing foreigners from getting jobs which Nigerians can do, to mention a few. Ghana and other West African countries continue to believe redress to even actions like these can be sought diplomatically, without resort to media statements and related activities that have the potential to aggravate further the situation.” | Nigeria, Ghana | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/akufo-addo-to-meet-buhari-to-defuse-diplomatic-tension/ | 13 |
ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | IGP: Politicians Arming Thugs Ahead of Edo, Ondo Governorship Polls | The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has raised alarm that politicians in Edo and Ondo States are arming thugs ahead of the governorship polls scheduled for September 19 and October 10, respectively. He has, therefore, ordered the commissioners of police in both States to rejig their security system to forestall a possible breach of the peace during the elections. The directive, according to a statement released on Sunday, August 30 by Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, came against the backdrop of security reports that politicians in the two States are planning to foment trouble on Election Day, as they are arming thugs to be deployed to rig the polls. The IGP, therefore, warned the politicians to conduct themselves properly, play by the rules and steer clear of tendencies capable of undermining the electoral process. However, the two major political parties in the two States, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have traded blame over the IGP’s allegations. IGP Adamu ordered the commissioners of police in the two States to rejig their preparations for the elections in order to accommodate and address the threats and emerging trends, as contained in the security reports. He noted that the force leadership was evolving customised security architecture to protect the people and ensure hitch-free elections. He assured Nigerians, particularly the people of Edo and Ondo States, that the police remained committed to protecting the sanctity of the ballot. | Edo and Ondo governorship Elections, Inspector General of Police | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/ig-politicians-arming-thugs-ahead-of-edo-ondo-gov-polls/ | 13 |
ThisDayLive Online | Monday, August 31, 2020 | Northern Elders Oppose Constitution Review | The Northern Elders' Forum (NEF) has faulted moves by the Senate to review the 1999 Constitution (as amended). NEF accused the federal lawmakers of spending huge amounts of money to fund the Constitution review process since 1999, without any meaningful impact on the lives of the people. Addressing journalists on Sunday, August 30 in Abuja, NEF’s Director of Publicity, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, advised the National Assembly to direct its energy and mandate towards convincing President Muhammadu Buhari to end the insurgency in the North-East and killings in most parts of the country. The Senate ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) had invited the public to submit memorandum to assist the “further alteration of the provisions of the constitution (as amended).” However, NEF queried the value of such efforts in the past, saying it is convinced that this repetitive initiative of the Senate is a predictable waste of time, resources and energy of the country and should not be supported by Nigerians. the body stated thus: “Nothing fundamental or of any value has come out of these grand schemes to exploit our collective desire to address our political and economic fundamentals. This National Assembly is also following suit and it should not be encouraged on this path. Nigeria’s future rests largely on its willingness to address major constraints to equity and justice, a functional structure, consistent good governance, security for all citizens, a credible electoral process, growing understanding between and among all groups and an economy that grows and narrows inequalities between and classes and regions." The group added that national goals cannot be achieved by a process that makes wasteful expenditure around false hopes, a routine. It added that, “The legislature and executive branches of government have large quantities of reviews, recommendations and reports from past attempts at amending the Constitutions." | Constitution Review, Northern Elders' Forum (NEF) | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/31/northern-elders-oppose-constitution-review/ | 13 |

The CSOs, in a jointly signed statement on Sunday, August 30 stated thus: “We dare say that even if this decision was taken with good intentions, it’s ill-advised, ill-timed and unhelpful as it fuels all forms of conspiracy theories and interpretation of collusion and attempt to cover up fraud, especially given that the National Assembly is already plagued by a lack of credibility or public trust.” Reacting to the statement, the House Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, in a text message to our correspondent, explained: “As a body of principal officers, we met and resolved that largely due to the present global health crisis of COVID-19 and lack of necessary protocol arrangements in place at the National Assembly, we needed to suspend committee programmes and activities till we resume when perhaps steps might have been taken to address such challenges.” | National Assembly, CISLAC | https://dailytrust.com/cislac-38-other-csos-flay-suspension-of-reps-activities | 13 |

According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, “It is embarrassing that after five years in office, President Buhari is still in campaign mood, reeling out empty promises at a time other world leaders are showcasing their achievements, a development that further confirms that his administration has nothing to show in the last five years. The PDP recalled that President Buhari and the APC had promised to pay N5,000 monthly allowance to indigent Nigerians; provide massive employment, free houses; monthly allowances to discharged Corps Members; reduction in price of fuel; revamp the refineries; bring the dollar to the same value as the naira, and other bogus promises “which have today become streams of mirage.” The spokesman of the PDP stated that on assumption of office, President Buhari reduced the litany of promises to three cardinal undertakings of ending insurgency and insecurity, fighting corruption, and improving on the economy. DailyTrust Online | Tuesday, August 25, 2020 | Edo Governorship: APC Seeks Transfer Of Suit Against Ize-Iyamu | The All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, to transfer the suit seeking the disqualification of its candidate in the Edo State governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu. The suit was filed by Momoh Abdul-Razak through his lawyer, Friday Nwosu, against the APC, Ize-Iyamu, the Independent NAtional Electoral Commission (INEC) and the deputy governorship candidate, Audu Ganiyu, challenging the candidate’s participation in the election on account of alleged ineligibility. But in the petition dated August 20, 2020 and signed by the National Secretary of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the party accused the presiding judge in the matter, Justice Taiwo Taiwo of preferring a speedy hearing by granting an application for abridgment of time. The APC also accused Justice Taiwo of being close to the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Edo State governorship election national campaign council, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. The APC specifically alleged that on August 10, Justice Taiwo on his own reduced the time allowed by law for the defendants to respond even when they had not been served with the originating summons by fixing the matter for August 24 when motion on notice for abridgment of time had not been moved by plaintiffs. When the matter came up on Monday, lawyers to Ize-Iyamu and APC, Roland Otaru (SAN) and Ehiogie West-Idahosa both informed the court about the petition, but the judge explained that only the Chief Judge can handle it administratively, adding that the National Judicial Council (NJC) directed that no pre-election matter shall stop proceedings until otherwise directed by the council. Consequently, the lawyers applied for adjournment to enable them respond to the issues raised in the suit. The suit was adjourned to September 3 for hearing. | Edo State governorship election | https://dailytrust.com/edo-govship-apc-seeks-transfer-of-suit-against-ize-iyamu | 11 |

He stressed the need for a mandatory test for those aspiring to become judges. Osinbajo, who spoke at a webinar titled, “Developing an Institutional Concept of Justice in Nigeria”, organised by Wole Olanipekun & Co, stated that the reforms were very crucial in getting appointment of judges right. According to him, “We must take a second look at the appointment of judges. The merit-based system is necessary. We need to do mandatory test for them. We need to look at how our judges are selected. It is not enough to rise through the ranks in the judiciary with judges going to the Supreme Court from the Appeal Court. We must be able to bring in practising lawyers and the academic to become judges. We owe it to ourselves to change the rules. Change is necessary and reform of our judiciary process should be urgent.” The Vice President further stated that technology had changed the way business is done, stressing that digitalisation of trial processes is now more than ever before inevitable. | Yemi Osibanjo, Appointment of Judges | https://guardian.ng/news/osinbajo-others-seek-reforms-in-appointment-of-judges/ | 10 |

ThisDayLive Online | Thursday, August 20, 2020 | PDP, APC Bicker Over Police Presence in Edo Towns | The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, August 19 disagreed over the heavy presence of police in Okpella, Agenebode, Akoko Edo and other parts of the State ahead of the September 19 governorship election. While the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, stated that there was nothing unusual about the increase in police presence, the spokesperson for the APC campaign council, Mr. John Mayaki faulted the deployment of over 50 police officers to Okpella community to guard the private residences of political appointees of Governor Godwin Obaseki. According to Osagie, “With just a month to the gubernatorial poll in Edo State, security agencies are stepping up their activities across the State. This should not be misconstrued by anyone. The claim by the APC is strange because anyone who means well for Edo people should commend the police for doing their job. The APC should not fret if they have no sinister plans.” Mayaki on the other hand, stated thus: “The Police officers were reportedly deployed on the orders of the Governor Godwin Obaseki and have set camp in the building of one Lukman Akemokue, a political aide and ally of the Deputy Governor. Residents of numerous surrounding communities in the area have lamented the Police officers’ night movements characterised by indiscriminate shootings, shouts of obscenities, and other bizarre acts of intimidation which they claim were aimed at inducing fear ahead of the polls”. | Edo State governorship election, PDP, APC | 9

Diri, who was reacting to the tribunal’s nullification of the November 16, 2019 governorship election, said he had already instructed his lawyers to appeal the judgment at the Court of Appeal. The Guardian Newspaper | Tuesday, August 18, 2020 | Drama as Reps, Amaechi Disagree OIver Alleged $33b Contract | Reactions were stirred on Monday, August 17 as the Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi vehemently disagreed with the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Loans, Treaties and Protocols, Mr. Ossai Nicholas Ossai, on the award of contracts for the construction of railways to the tune of $33 billion. The issue, which generated a heated argument, forced the committee to suspend proceedings for about 30 minutes after Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila waded in to restore orderliness. Ossai, at the start of the hearing, expressed displeasure with the Ministry of Transport for allegedly obtaining over $33 billion loan from China for the construction of rail project without any clear cut financing arrangements. The lawmaker, who claimed that most of the commercial contracts agreements lacked local content clauses, said it was unfortunate that the deals were sealed by non-designated and unauthorised officials. Ossai’s claim irked Amaechi who insisted that there was no iota of truth in the allegation that his ministry obtained $33 billion for the construction of railway projects. The ministerdisclosed that his ministry had so far obtained $1.6 billion loan for the construction of the Lagos -Ibadan railway project. Amaechi also faulted the notion held in certain quarters that the local content laws were breached by his ministry. He warned that the activities of the lawmakers would hinder the acquisition of the loans to finance the South South rail projects, insisting that the only loan secured by the present government was the $I.6 billion for the Lagos -Ibadan rail. | Rotimi Amaechi, Chinese Loans, House of Representatives, Committee on Loans, Treaties and Protocols | https://guardian.ng/news/drama-as-reps-amaechi-disagree-over-alleged-33b-contract/ | 8 |
The Guardian Newspaper | Tuesday, August 18, 2020 | INEC Reacts To Nullification Of Bayelsa Governorship Election | The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it may respond to some of the issues raised by the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal when it is availed of the full judgment of the case. INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, stated this in an interview on Monday, August 17 in Abuja. The Commission was reacting to the nullification of the State’s governorship election which produced Governor Duoye Diri. Mr Okoye, however, noted that the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP)'s nomination for the election was invalid while the party did not exercise its right guaranteed in the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution by filing its suit within 14 days of the accrual of the said right. Mr Okoye recalled that the ANDP was one of the political parties that signified its intention to contest the November 16, 2019 Bayelsa governorship election. He stated that the party conducted party primaries and submitted the name of one Peter David aged 34 years-old as its deputy governorship candidate. This is contrary to Section 177(b) of the constitution that makes it mandatory for a candidate for such office to attain the age of 35 years to be eligible to contest the election. On September 13, 2019, the Commission wrote to the party drawing their attention to the constitutional age requirement. "The commission also informed them of the invalidity of their nomination for the November 16, 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa State,” Mr. Okoye added. He further recalled that on September 21, 2019, and in response to the letter of the Commission, the ANDP wrote to the Commission, acknowledging the invalidity of its nomination and forwarding the name of one Inowei Janeth as their new deputy governorship candidate. “On Sept. 27, 2019, the commission informed the party that the deadline for the submission of nominations as provided for in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities released by the Commission on May 16, 2019, was Sept. 9, 2019. The Commission also informed the party that since they did not submit a valid nomination, they could not validly substitute any candidate. Consequently the name and logo of the party did not appear and was not reflected in the ballot paper". | Bayelsa State Governorship election, INEC, ANDP | https://guardian.ng/news/inec-reacts-to-nullification-of-bayelsa-governorship-election/ | 8 |

The Guardian Newspaper | Monday, August 17, 2020 | Again, Amaechi Urges National Assembly To Halt Probe Of Chinese Loans | The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has again urged the National Assembly to stop probe into the Chinese loans. Amaechi, who spoke at the weekend during the inspection tour of the projects funded by the loans, said this could hinder the Federal Government from accessing a $5.3 billion loan request from China to kick-start the Ibadan-Kano part of the rail project. He stated that the ministry was ready to commence the project but was still waiting for funding. According to him, “The National Assembly should stop this investigation of loan. They are not investigating corruption of construction. What we meant is that they should allow us to get the loan for Ibadan-Kano, which is about $5.3 billion, because if the Chinese government has the feeling that you don’t like the way they lend you money, they may withdraw their loan offers.” | Rotimi Amaechi, Chinese Loans | 7

Ize-Iyamu, who spoke in an interview monitored from BBC Pidgin English programme, explained that the money did not come to him and it was not paid into his account. Ize-Iyamu, along with others, is currently being tried in court over the allegation. The APC flagbearer added that he was just one of those who signed for the money before the bank officials took it to the house of the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, where all the party’s Local Government Chairmen in the State took turns to sign and collect the money meant for their various Local Governments. The Guardian Newspaper | Monday, August 17, 2020 | Clampdown On Opposition Won’t Stop Criticism Of Government’s Blunders, Arewa Groups Tell Buhari | Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has stated that no amount of clampdown by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government on the opposition will suppress criticism against its missteps. Spokesman of CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, stated on Sunday, August 16, that the group found it worrying that the Buhari administration was becoming more intolerant of opposition and criticism and gradually dragging the country towards a police State. The coalition condemned the invitation of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, by the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning. The security agents reportedly invited Na’Abba over the interview he granted Channels Television on Thursday, August 13 regarding the agenda of the National Consultative Front (NCF) to bring about a new Nigeria where democracy would be deepened. Suleiman stated thus: “We find this attempt to harass Na’Abba, a senior citizen and critical stakeholder in the nation’s democratic process, a brutal encroachment on the citizens’ universal right to freedom of expression, which is a fundamental characteristic of any democratic state.” According to him, it is ridiculous that those who run the government, after benefitting the most from the previous administration’s tolerant disposition, should be the ones denying others the same right they enjoyed. “The CNG repudiates this unhealthy, undemocratic trend of government’s exercise of power through security agencies to impose restrictions on citizens’ mobility, or on their freedom to express or communicate political or other views and hold it unacceptable." | Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) | https://guardian.ng/news/clampdown-on-opposition-wont-stop-criticism-of-governments-blunders-arewa-groups-tell-buhari/ | 7 |

High Chief Ameh, who is also the National Chairman of Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, in a statement issued on Sunday, August 16 in Abuja, also advised INEC to jettison the temptation to appeal the judgment, which according to him would amount to grandstanding. Ameh stated that, “So we return to the basics: freedom of association. Any attempt by INEC to appeal this decision will amount to mere grandstanding and a waste of taxpayers’ money.” According to him, “The time tested democratic principles and the rule of law first enunciated by the wise men of ancient Greece and nurtured by the larger democracies world over, including Nigeria, cannot be allowed to be felled in one swoop by any agency of government. Our Appellate Courts have in a plethora of cases, including Musa V. INEC continued to stand in defence of liberty, justice, freedom and multi-party democracy as the only route for the advancement of our Nation. The Court of Appeal, led by its President Hon. The Guardian Newspaper | Thursday, August 13, 2020 | Controversy Trails Creation Of New Electoral Wards In Akwa Ibom | Mr. Ekopimo Ekopimo, the new wards creation exercise was unfair to Nsit Ubium LGA. In its reaction, the Oron National Forum (ONAF) described the creation of the new wards as lopsided and unjust against the Oro people, who are found in five local government areas of the State. Similarly, a former member of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and chieftain of the All Progressives (APC) Congress, Dr. Uwem Udoma, faulted the creation of additional 39 wards, claiming that the State electoral commission does not have such powers, and that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was by law, empowered to do so. While responding to these criticisms, Chairman of AKSIEC and former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, insisted that AKISIEC has the power to create electoral wards, but not polling units, adding that there would have been no auspicious time than now to carry out the exercise. He explained that the commission followed the law to create and to realign the new wards in the State. According to him, “The criteria for ward creation is spelt out in the law that sets up the commission, which specifies that there should be creation and realignment of wards in the state every 10 years”. He added that the last exercise was done about 22 or 24 years ago. In a memo to President Buhari, the AGF attached documentary evidence that the properties on which his traducers based their allegations were deposed to in his asset declarations to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). A coalition of civil society organisations had petitioned Buhari against Malami, asking that the minister should step down from office in view of online reports of alleged massive acquisition of expensive properties likely to be proceeds of corrupt enrichment. But in the AGF’s memo dated August 7, 2020, he declared that the petitioners are on a futile expedition, even as he detailed his earnings, including salaries, allowances, estacodes, sundry income and benefits of businesses he received since his appointment as minister from 2015 till date. Malami disclosed that apart from a successful legal practice of more than 20 years, seven of which were as a senior advocate of Nigeria, he had interests in business ventures allowed by law before withdrawing active participation upon his appointment. ThisdayLive Online | Thursday, August 6, 2020 | Presidency: No Plan to Conscript Repentant Terrorists into Armed Forces | The Presidency has stated that no repentant Boko Haram terrorist has been conscripted into the armed forces, adding that there is no plan to enlist any of them in future. The Presidency made this clarification on Wednesday, August 5 in reaction to widespread condemnation of the alleged absorption of deradicalised members of the terrorist group into the military, as well as the rejection of their integration into the society by victims of their heinous acts. A statement by presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, described those making the insinuations as accomplices to fake news. He emphasised that none of the 601 deradicalised ex-members of the Boko Haram group would be recruited into the armed forces despite the completion of the deradicalisation process. According to Shehu, the deradicalisation process, otherwise known as “Operation Safe Corridor,” was an imitation of an initiative adopted by countries with similar terrorism experience. He stated that they also enjoy an educational package supported by international organisations. He disclosed that an international agency, International Organisation for Migration, is the lead agency implementing the programme in Gombe State. He stated that hardened terrorists are ruled out of the deradicalisation process, while beneficiaries of the process were rather those forced into violent extremism against their own will. He admonished community members to stop rejecting the deradicalised ex-terrorists if they don’t want them to return to violence. | Insurgents, Deradicalisation | https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/08/06/presidency-no-plan-to-conscript-repentant-terrorists-into-armed-forces/ | 3 |

According to him, “It is enforcement that has largely been lacking and my appeal is that the subnationals should ensure enforcement. As a matter of fact, when we listed some of our challenges, that was top on the list.” While he did not disclose the recommendations, the SGF hinted that the next level of the eased lockdown will focus on three themes – movement, labour and community activities. | PTF, COVID-19 | https://guardian.ng/news/states-major-challenge-to-tackling-covid-19-says-ptf/ | 3 |

DailyTrust Online | Tuesday, August 4, 2020 | Ondo: INEC Denies Substituting AAC Candidate | The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied substituting the candidate of African Action Congress (AAC) in the coming October 10 governorship election in Ondo State. The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye, stated this on Monday, August 3 in Abuja. According to him, the commission published the provisional list of candidates for the Ondo State governorship election in its State office in Akure and also uploaded same to its website and social media platforms. He said the list contained the names of the governorship and deputy governorship candidates submitted by 17 political parties, including AAC at the close of nomination on 28th July 2020. He added that, “However, one of the aspirants in the primaries of the party accused the commission of substituting his name as the rightful governorship candidate of the party, while another aspirant also claimed that the commission substituted his deputy governorship candidate. Contrary to these assertions, INEC did not substitute the name of any aspirant or candidate. The commission received only one submission from the AAC through its dedicated online portal for candidate nomination. There was no human interface. He added that “we would work with State governments to prepare necessary space and human resources at general hospitals or Primary Healthcare Centres to train and set up at least one sample collection site in every Local Government Area in due course, with efficient sample retrieval logistics to convey samples to laboratories. “As the cause of the disease becomes clearer, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) warns that COVID-19 may be with us for a long time. Ehanire also announced that plans were ongoing to designate holding rooms at general hospitals, with facilities for oxygen administration, such as oxygen concentrators or oxygen cylinders. “Some investment in this strategy, known in Lagos State as oxygen kiosks, will be required, but the benefit in lives saved will be significant,” he said. “This means that we should consider adjusting to what has been described as the ‘new normal,’ a way of life that is intended to reduce risk of infection, while allowing meaningful economic life to resume and citizens to restore their livelihoods,” he added. | COVID-19 | https://guardian.ng/news/covid-19-fg-to-develop-innovative-interventions-to-improve-survival-chances/ | 2 |

DailyTrust Online | Monday, August 3, 2020 | Atiku Asks Buhari, APC To Apologise To Nigerians Over Loans | A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to apologise to Nigerians for collecting ‘humongous’ loans. Atiku stated that the government should make an admittance of guilt for taking the country through the “throes of subjugation to another country.” But the APC responded by stating that Atiku failed Nigerians as Vice President, adding that he had no moral right to make such demand. Atiku has for long advocated for a more robust engagement of the private sector and promotion of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as sustainable alternatives through which government can fund infrastructure development. Atiku stated, “Nigeria had a total foreign debt stock of $7.02bn on May 29, 2015. Today, our foreign debt is $23bn and rapidly rising. “Debt, by itself, is not a bad thing. But debt budgeted for such unproductive ventures like the proposed $500m upgrade of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and other sundry bogus contracts is debt that leads to death. To trade Nigeria’s sovereignty for this type of profligacy is the height of irresponsibility.” However, APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, stated that, “Atiku should be the one to apologise to Nigerians. DailyTrust Online | Monday, August 3, 2020 | 2023 Presidency: Arewa Youths Reject Mamman Daura’s Call to Jettison Zoning | Northern youths under the aegis of Arewa Youths for Peace and Security have rejected a call for political parties to jettison zoning in the choice of presidential candidates for the 2023 general election. President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura, suggested last week, that there was no need for zoning of presidency to any part of the country, stressing that emphasis should be on competence. But the Arewa youths in a statement on Sunday, August 2 by their president, Salisu Magaji, however, argued that if the presidency was allowed to return to the South in the next general election, it will further solidify Nigeria’s stability and cohesion as a democratic state. The group stated that it will be unfair not to allow the Southern part of the country to take another shot in the leadership of the country under the zoning arrangement before it is dropped. “Our view is that we support and encourage the zoning of the 2023 presidency to the South. They have a chance to bring a credible and competent candidate to run for 2023 presidency. Our position is that the North should support the South for the peace, stability and tranquillity of the nation. It is our belief now that if we say the North should continue after President Buhari ends his second tenure, it will affect the cohesion as nation and destroy its fabric. So our candid advice is that the North should step aside to allow a Southerner to succeed Buhari. It is a sacrifice we must encourage. It is a sacrifice we must partake.” | Arewa Youths, Zoning | https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/2023-presidency-arewa-youths-reject-mamman-dauras-call-to-jettison-zoning.html | 1 |
