DAILY TRUST1ST DECEMBER 2025Former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh returns to politics and joins APC, says PDP abandoned him in his darkest momentsFormer PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the PDP abandoned him during his legal and personal challenges. Speaking at a thanksgiving service marking his 60th birthday in Abuja, Metuh said he resigned from politics three years ago but is returning through the APC because its members stood by him when he needed support the most.

Metuh praised President Tinubu for showing him unexpected kindness during his travails and said he now wants to contribute to national development through the ruling party. He insisted, however, that Nigeria still has credible opposition figures and is not heading toward a one-party state. He acknowledged the country’s challenges and pledged to help strengthen democracy, improve governance and support the federal government.

The event was attended by several political heavyweights including Governor Hope Uzodinma and former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim. Metuh added that although he was invited multiple times by President Tinubu to join the APC in the past, he only accepted now that he has chosen to re-enter politics.

DAILY TRUST1ST DECEMBER 2025‘Embarrassingly Insensitive’: ADC condemns President Tinubu's appointment of former INEC Chairman Professor Mahood YakubuThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, as an ambassador, calling it “embarrassingly insensitive” and a threat to the neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral system.

ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that appointing Yakubu who oversaw the 2023 election that brought Tinubu to power, only weeks after he left office undermines ethical standards and could set a dangerous precedent where electoral umpires expect political rewards.

The party argued that the ambassadorial list, which also includes Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri, is filled with political loyalists, corruption suspects, and relatives of the president’s allies, rather than competent diplomats capable of restoring Nigeria’s foreign credibility.

ADC urged Yakubu to decline the offer to safeguard INEC’s integrity and called on the Senate to reject his nomination if he does not.

VANGUARD1ST DECEMBER 2025Amaechi Rotimi declares intention to run for Presidency as he rejects talks of collaboration aimed at making him a vice-presidential candidateFormer Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied claims that he is being considered as a potential running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.

The rumours surfaced after Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu, hinted that Atiku might choose Amaechi as a vice-presidential option if Peter Obi declines to partner with him.

Responding through his media aide, David Iyofor, Amaechi said he is not interested in being anyone’s running mate and remains focused on pursuing his own presidential ambition. He insisted that it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next president and reaffirmed his intention to seek the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.

This is not the first time Amaechi has publicly expressed his intention to contest under the ADC. He has previously declared he would not step down for any aspirant and, if elected, is willing to serve a single term to advance power rotation and political stability.

Amaechi, who finished second behind Bola Tinubu in the APC’s 2022 presidential primary, emphasised that politicians should stop including his name in vice-presidential speculations.

VANGUARD1ST DECEMBER 2025Peter Obi accuses ECOWAS of double standards in its response to the coup in Guinea-BissauLabour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused ECOWAS of applying double standards in its response to democratic disruptions across West Africa. In a post on X, Obi criticised the regional body for swiftly condemning the recent military-related “glitch” that disrupted elections in Guinea-Bissau while remaining silent on the “technical glitch” that marred Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.

Obi said both military and technological disruptions undermine democracy and should attract equal scrutiny. He noted that former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was in Guinea-Bissau as an election observer, had raised doubts about the nature of the incident, describing it as a “suspicious coup” despite the largely peaceful election.

Obi questioned why ECOWAS sanctions military interference in some states but ignores electoral subversion executed through technology failures. He argued that such inconsistencies erode public trust and destabilise the region.

He insisted that transparency and accountability are essential for credible elections and warned that both “coup glitches” and “technical glitches” deny citizens their mandate. Obi concluded that West Africa must confront all forms of electoral interference to build stronger democracies and that “a New Nigeria is possible.”

DAILY TRUST2ND DECEMBER 2026Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar resigns amid growing security concerns, cites health reasonsNigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, citing health reasons. His resignation, dated December 1, was conveyed to President Bola Tinubu and announced by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga.

Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State before being appointed Defence Minister in August 2023. His exit comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency following rising insecurity, including kidnappings and killings nationwide.

Tinubu also held a meeting with former Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, though it is unclear if it relates to the now-vacant Defence Minister position.

DAILY TRUST2ND DECEMBER 2025Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke resigns from PDP ahead of the State's 2026 Governorship ElectionGovernor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirming weeks of speculation about his political future ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a resignation letter dated November 4, 2025, and shared publicly on his social media pages, Adeleke said the escalating national leadership crisis within the PDP had made his continued membership “untenable.” He notified his ward leadership in Sagba Abogunde, Ede North LGA, of his withdrawal.

Adeleke thanked the PDP for its role in his rise from senator to governor but said he needed “political clarity” and stability to govern effectively. His exit comes days after he boycotted the PDP national convention in Ibadan as the party battles major defections and internal fractures.

The governor has not yet declared his new political platform, though reports have linked him to the APC and the Accord Party.

His resignation aligns with concerns raised by Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi, who recently said the national crisis had crippled preparations for the party’s governorship primary and cast doubt on Adeleke’s interest in seeking the PDP ticket for a second term.

In a statement by Interim National Publicity Secretary Ife Salako, the committee urged party members nationwide to disregard the Abure-led congresses scheduled for December 2, 4, and 6, describing them as illegal and already nullified by the court.

The committee called on the Inspector-General of Police to arrest anyone involved in the “illegitimate” exercises and asked INEC to stay away from them. It added that the party will announce its authentic congress timetable soon.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the Northern States Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, reaffirmed its commitment to regional unity and cooperation. The leaders expressed condolences to states affected by recent killings, abductions and Boko Haram attacks, and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies for recent rescue efforts and counter-insurgency operations.

The forum announced major decisions including full support for the establishment of state police and urged northern federal and state lawmakers to accelerate the legislative process. The governors identified illegal mining as a major contributor to insecurity and recommended that President Tinubu direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining activities for six months to allow for a comprehensive audit and revalidation of mining licences. They also approved the creation of a Regional Security Trust Fund, with each state and its local governments contributing ₦1 billion monthly, to be deducted at source, to strengthen security operations across the region. The forum is expected to reconvene at a later date.

CHANNELS TV2ND DECEMBER 2025Christian Genocide: US Congress to hold briefing today on alleged persecution of Christians in NigeriaThe United States House Appropriations Committee will hold a joint congressional briefing today, to examine alleged persecution and escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria. The notice, shared by US Congressman Riley Moore, states that the session will be led by Committee Vice Chair and National Security Subcommittee Chair Mario Díaz-Balart, alongside members of the Appropriations, Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees.

Representatives from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom and other experts are expected to provide testimony. According to the announcement, the briefing aims to spotlight growing attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria and contribute to a comprehensive report ordered by former President Donald Trump on the alleged massacre of Christians and possible congressional actions to support global religious freedom.

The briefing comes amid heightened US-Nigeria engagement on security issues following a surge in terrorist attacks. Last week, President Bola Tinubu approved the Nigerian team for the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to deepen bilateral security cooperation.

International attention on Nigeria’s insecurity intensified after Trump accused the Nigerian government of allowing “Christian genocide,” a claim Nigeria strongly denied, insisting it remains committed to religious freedom. The issue resurfaced recently when the US House Subcommittee on Africa reviewed Nigeria’s redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern, with witnesses expressing differing views on the scope and drivers of violence in the country.

DAILY TRUST3RD DECEMBER 2025Senate set to screen General Christopher Musa (Rtd) today after his nomination by president Tinubu as the new Minister of DefenceThe Senate has scheduled Wednesday, December 3, 2025, for the screening of retired General Christopher Musa as the new Minister of Defence. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele confirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s request for Musa’s screening will be formally read on the Senate floor before the process begins. Bamidele said the Senate will fast-track the exercise, noting the urgency of strengthening national security, especially after Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on security.

Musa’s nomination follows the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru. The retired general previously served as Chief of Defence Staff until October 30, leaving office only five weeks ago. His quick return to government sparked questions, but presidency sources said Tinubu was advised to appoint someone with solid military experience to lead the ministry. Security experts, including retired Brigadier General Mohammed Galadanchi, expressed confidence in Musa’s ability to help address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

VANGUARD3RD DECEMBER 2025Turaki-led faction of the PDP issues expulsion certificates to Wike, Fayose, and nine others The Kabiru Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally issued expulsion certificates to 11 high-profile politicians, including former governors Nyesom Wike and Ayodele Fayose, in what the party leadership described as a decisive step to restore internal discipline ahead of the 2027 elections. National Chairman Kabiru Turaki, SAN, announced the development after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, saying the decision followed extensive reviews of party activities, legal disputes, and the handover notes from the former NWC.

According to Turaki, couriered certificates have already been sent to Wike, Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna and Dan Orbih. He said the party would officially notify INEC, security agencies and the public that the individuals no longer represent the PDP in any capacity.

Turaki confirmed that the NWC had reviewed and approved congresses conducted in Osun State to select ad hoc delegates and insisted that the Osun governorship primary was proceeding smoothly. He maintained that Governor Ademola Adeleke remained an aspirant, noting that the party had not received any formal resignation letter despite one circulating online.

Speaking on broader national issues, Turaki criticised the security situation under the APC-led government, saying Nigerians lived in fear and security architecture needed an overhaul. He also addressed legal cases concerning PDP properties and said the new NWC had begun studying handover documents to guarantee administrative continuity.

Reaffirming the party’s readiness for 2027, Turaki said the strength of the PDP lay in its members rather than in elected officials.

Meanwhile, the PDP challenged President Bola Tinubu to uphold at home the same democratic principles he purportedly advanced by granting asylum to Fernando Da Costa, the Guinea-Bissau opposition presidential candidate. While the party welcomed the intervention as beneficial to regional stability, it accused unnamed actors within the ruling APC of coercing defections and sponsoring internal crises in opposition parties. The PDP argued that Nigeria risks sliding toward a one-party state if the President fails to restrain anti-democratic tendencies within his political base.

VANGUARD3RD DECEMBER 2025US House Appropriations and Foreign Affairs leaders hold rare joint briefing as part of broader congressional investigation into alleged Christian genocide in NigeriaU.S. House Appropriations and Foreign Affairs leaders held a rare joint briefing in Washington to investigate what lawmakers and experts describe as rising, targeted attacks on Christians in Nigeria. The session, led by Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, is part of a comprehensive report ordered by former President Donald Trump to assess recent massacres of Nigerian Christians and recommend U.S. policy options. Experts who testified including Vicky Hartzler of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, said religious freedom in Nigeria is “under siege,” citing mass abductions, village attacks and church burnings. Hartzler argued Christians are targeted at more than twice the rate of Muslims and urged the U.S. to impose sanctions, visa bans and tighter conditions on aid to Nigeria.

Dr. Ebenezer Obadare of the Council on Foreign Relations challenged Nigeria’s claim that the violence is not religiously motivated, calling it a myth and insisting extremist groups act explicitly in the name of religion. He faulted Nigeria’s military as corrupt and ineffective, saying stronger external pressure is needed. Another expert, Sean Nelson, described Nigeria as the world’s deadliest country for Christians and pressed for greater transparency in how Abuja manages kidnappings and security operations. Lawmakers criticised the Biden administration for removing Nigeria from the “country of particular concern” list in 2021 and signalled further oversight as they prepare the Trump-directed report. Witnesses acknowledged some recent steps taken by the Nigerian government, including redeploying police officers from VIP duties, but warned they are insufficient without genuine accountability and rapid response to threats. The Nigerian Embassy did not comment.

THE GUARDIAN3RD DECEMBER 2025Ondo PDP accuses Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of political showmanship for publicly expressing confidence in the Commander of the Amotekun CorpsThe Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for publicly expressing confidence in the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, despite growing concerns over the welfare of the corps’ operatives. The PDP argued that the governor’s endorsement, along with his plan to recruit 500 additional Amotekun personnel, amounts to political showmanship rather than a genuine effort to improve security. The party said the administration should first address unpaid salaries, documentation issues, and other welfare-related complaints affecting current operatives.

Responding, the All Progressives Congress accused the PDP of politicising security matters and insisted that the governor’s support for Adeleye is rooted in his track record and operational achievements. The APC maintained that expanding the Amotekun workforce is necessary given the state’s security challenges and added that the government is already addressing welfare concerns in a structured and transparent manner.

THE GUARDIAN3RD DECEMBER 2025Senator Danjuma Goje, challenges Senate President, Godswill Akpabio for repeatedly stalling plenary sessions to hold private discussions with selected lawmakersTension erupted in the Senate when Gombe Central Senator Danjuma Goje openly confronted Senate President Godswill Akpabio for halting plenary to hold private discussions with selected senators. Akpabio had paused proceedings shortly after arriving in the chamber, leading to over 40 minutes of disorder as senators held side conversations. Goje condemned the action as “unparliamentary” and a violation of Senate rules, insisting such meetings should take place outside the chamber. Akpabio defended the consultation, saying it was tied to an urgent assignment at the Presidential Villa, but Goje refused to join when invited.

The incident underscores growing dissatisfaction among some lawmakers over perceived procedural breaches and Akpabio’s repeated interruptions of plenary sessions for private consultations.

On the same day, Akpabio announced a strategic reshuffle of Senate committees. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi was appointed Chairman of the influential Committee on National Security and Intelligence, replacing Shehu Buba, who now heads the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry. Senator Mustafa Musa takes over the National Planning Committee, while Minority Whip Osita Ngwu becomes Acting Chairman of the Air Force Committee as Senator Godiya Akwashiki recovers. Akpabio said the changes were intended to strengthen oversight and align committee leadership with legislative priorities.

DAILY TRUST4TH DECEMBER 2025Tensions resurface in Rivers State as Assembly accuses Governor Fubara of neglecting schoolsBarely two months after President Tinubu lifted emergency rule in Rivers State, tensions have re-emerged between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

At its 31st Legislative Sitting, the Assembly accused the executive of abandoning public schools, citing vandalised facilities, decayed infrastructure and severe teacher shortages. Lawmakers questioned why Governor Fubara had not addressed the crisis despite claims that over ₦600 billion was left in the state’s coffers by former Sole Administrator Rear Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas.

Speaker Amaewhule criticised the government for allegedly prioritising protests over basic education needs, arguing that schools near even the police headquarters had collapsed. He revived concerns about the stalled recruitment of 10,000 workers initiated by the previous administration.

Governor Fubara rejected the accusations, saying the rot in the education sector predated his tenure and that employment would be based on genuine needs, not political pressure. He maintained that his administration was focused on security, healthcare and completing key projects, noting that months of political crisis had slowed progress.

In a separate development, the Assembly passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, urging him to seek a second term and pledging loyalty through FCT Minister and Rivers political leader, Nyesom Wike. The endorsement sparked criticism online, with commentators accusing the lawmakers of prioritising politics over governance. Atiku Abubakar’s aide, Paul Ibe, condemned the resolutions as self-serving and disconnected from the needs of Rivers people, warning that the political manoeuvring could fuel fresh instability in the state.

CHANNELS TV4TH DECEMBER 2025Senate confirms General Christopher Musa's nomination as the Minister of DefenceThe Senate has confirmed former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as Defence Minister after a rigorous five-hour screening prompted by rising insecurity across the country. Musa’s confirmation comes amid a surge in mass abductions, including the recent kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Maga, Kebbi State, where troops reportedly withdrew shortly before the attack.

Musa vowed to investigate the troop withdrawal, insisting the military “is not known for cowardice” and promising to pursue terrorists relentlessly in collaboration with all security agencies. He declared that Nigeria must stop paying ransom, warning that such payments fuel criminal activities, and stressed the need for advanced technology, including a national electronic database, to track ransom flows and improve intelligence.

Rejecting negotiations with bandits, Musa said such deals compromise national security and allow criminals to regroup and rearm. Senate President Godswill Akpabio backed his stance, condemning ransom payments and deradicalisation programmes, which he said have failed and demoralise communities.

Akpabio assured him of legislative support and called for shorter trial periods for terrorism-related offences. Musa’s confirmation follows his nomination by President Bola Tinubu to replace Mohammed Badaru, who resigned due to ill health.

DAILY TRUST4TH DECEMBER 2025CVR: Election observers raise alarm over possible CVR data padding as only 2.5m of 9.8m Nigerians complete registration processThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained why only 2.57 million Nigerians completed their voter registration out of the 9.89 million who began the process online during the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). According to INEC’s Director of Voter Education, Victoria Eta-Messi, many applicants failed to complete physical or online biometric capture before the December 10 deadline.

Osun, Kano, Imo and Sokoto recorded the highest number of completed registrations, while Ekiti, Abia, Ondo, Enugu and Ebonyi had the lowest. INEC will display the preliminary voters’ register from December 15–21 for public scrutiny, with the second phase of CVR scheduled to begin on January 15, 2026.

INEC officials said the gap between online pre-registration and completion is due to work schedules, applicants who initiated registration abroad, ineligibility discovered during verification, and logistical constraints. Election observers, including Yiaga Africa’s Samson Itodo, added that multiple registrations, poorly located centres, long queues, limited mobilisation and declining voter confidence also contributed to the drop-off.

Itodo warned that the 9.8 million online entries may contain fraudulent or duplicate records, urging INEC to strengthen its verification processes to protect the integrity of the 2027 voter register.

VANGUARD4TH DECEMBER 2025IGP orders crackdown on illegal VIP Police escortsThe Nigeria Police Force has warned that any officer caught providing escort or protection for VIPs will be arrested, following a strict directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

Force PRO Benjamin Hundeyin, speaking on Channels TV, said all officers previously assigned to VIP escorts have been withdrawn, and enforcement teams have been deployed to airports in Abuja and Lagos to arrest defaulters.

He clarified that some public officials, such as governors and judges are still legally entitled to police protection pending further instructions from the presidency.

The directive aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s order withdrawing police escorts from VIPs so personnel can be redirected to core policing duties amid worsening insecurity. The President also mandated VIPs to rely on NSCDC personnel for security if needed.

The policy is part of a broader security shake-up under Tinubu, including a declared state of security emergency and approval for increased police and military recruitment.

DAILY TRUST5TH DECEMBER 2025'Misplaced Priorities': Opposition accuses President Tinubu of early 2027 campaign over RHA vehicle distribution amid rising insecurityOpposition parties - the PDP, ADC, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi have accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of launching an early 2027 re-election campaign through the appointment of Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA) and the distribution of branded vehicles to their state coordinators. They argue that the initiative is a disguised political mobilisation effort that violates the Electoral Act, especially as INEC has not yet opened the campaign season.

Critics say the move shows misplaced priorities at a time when Nigerians face worsening insecurity, hunger and economic hardship. The ADC described it as “cynically insensitive,” while Peter Obi criticised the allocation of scarce resources to luxury vehicles instead of urgent social needs.

The APC denies any link to the 2027 elections, insisting the RHA is meant to promote government achievements and rebuild public confidence. The presidency has avoided comment, and attempts to get clarification from APC officials were unsuccessful.

Political analysts say the activities amount to clear early campaigning and reflect Tinubu’s priority of consolidating power over governance. Social media reactions were largely negative, with many Nigerians accusing the government of focusing on politics rather than insecurity and economic suffering.

INEC has previously warned that early campaigning undermines democracy but remains limited by law in its ability to impose sanctions.

THE GUARDIAN5TH DECEMBER 2025Constitution Review: Reps postpone Constitution Review debate for further consultation over alleged unresolved issues in the draftThe House of Representatives has postponed its planned debate on the ongoing Constitution review to allow for wider consultation and proper harmonisation of sensitive proposals. Lawmakers said the draft still contains unresolved issues, especially on security reforms, local government autonomy, and provisions likely to influence the 2027 elections.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who leads the review committee, said the delay is necessary to ensure the process remains credible, inclusive and technically sound. Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere and other members supported the postponement, warning that rushing the debate could undermine public confidence and distort the outcome.

The review, described as the most extensive since 1999, has attracted over 50 amendment proposals from citizens, civil society groups and state assemblies. The House is expected to resume the debate once a harmonised draft is ready, potentially on December 10, with voting to follow before year-end. Speaking at a press conference, Iortyom described the initiative as a harmful regional policy that would drain Benue’s resources without addressing the state’s security challenges.

He accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of prioritising a regional fund over strengthening local security structures, arguing that the arrangement would not protect Benue communities or enforce state laws. Iortyom insisted that investing even half of the proposed monthly contribution into community-based intelligence, volunteer guards and rural security units would significantly curb insecurity.

He also criticised Governor Alia for disbanding the local Livestock Guards and Volunteer Guards, saying the previous administration’s community-based security architecture had been effective despite limitations. CHANNELS TV8TH DECEMBER 2025"I Will Never Allow It": Nyesom Wike rejects expulsion as PDP crisis deepens furtherThe Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed attempts by a rival faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to expel him, insisting that “no one can expel me from the PDP.” Speaking during a meeting with members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Council (NEC) aligned with Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed—Wike said he has been part of the party since its formation and would not allow newer members to push him out.

Responding to the expulsion notice issued by the faction loyal to Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, Wike said he would not permit “those who met me in my house” to destroy the party. He questioned Bala Mohammed’s political history and criticised leaders he alleged were trying to edge out founding members and major contributors.

Wike urged party stakeholders to stand firm, saying that those who do not mean well for the PDP “are on their way out.” The meeting, attended by senior party figures including Okezie Ikpeazu and Samuel Anyanwu, focused on ongoing efforts to stabilise the party. BoT Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa said significant progress was being made in setting up caretaker committees to prepare for overdue state congresses.

The PDP has been facing an escalating leadership crisis since losing the 2023 presidential election, with multiple defections to the APC and a deepening internal split between factions led by Wike and others. The crisis has also spilled into the courts, as the Kabiru Turaki-led faction recently asked Justice Joyce Abdulmalik to step aside from a key case over concerns of fairness.

PREMIUM TIMES8TH DECEMBER 2025APC reschedules National Caucus and NEC meetings The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adjusted the dates of its National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, revising the earlier announced timetable for its top decision-making sessions. The party rescheduled the meetings, as announced in a notice circulated on Sunday.

According to the updated schedule, the National Caucus will now convene on Thursday, 18 December, at 6:00 p.m., while the NEC will meet the following day, Friday, 19 December, at 3:00 p.m. Both meetings are expected to be held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The APC had initially fixed the Caucus and NEC meetings for 15 and 16 December, respectively, before issuing the revised notice. No official explanation was provided for the adjustment, but there are speculations that the shift is linked to broader consultations and preparations ahead of key organisational decisions expected at the meetings.

Speaking after appearing before the APC Appeal Committee in Abuja, Omisore said neither he nor the six other disqualified aspirants had been informed of any specific infractions.

He alleged that the screening panel produced multiple conflicting reports and that the version submitted to the APC national secretariat was not the original. According to him, the panel chairman admitted privately that he was pressured to disqualify all major aspirants to favour a preferred candidate.

THE GUARDIAN8TH DECEMBER 2025‘Under Control’: Talon addresses Nation after alleged coup attemptBenin’s government successfully foiled an attempted coup after a small group of soldiers calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on state TV claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon from office. The coup attempt was swiftly countered by loyalist troops, with major military support from Nigeria, including air strikes and troop deployment.

Beninese authorities arrested around a dozen soldiers involved in the plot. ECOWAS also mobilised regional troops from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Nigeria to support constitutional order.

President Talon later addressed the nation, assuring citizens that the “situation is completely under control”, urging calm as normalcy returned to Cotonou. Though gunfire was heard earlier in the day and key areas were blocked off, residents have resumed daily activities.

The coup plotters justified their actions by citing worsening insecurity in northern Benin, claims of neglect of soldiers’ welfare, and unfair promotions. Regional and international organisations including the African Union, UN, and France, strongly condemned the attempted takeover.

The incident adds to a wave of coups in West Africa in recent years. Talon, in power since 2016, is set to hand over power in 2026 after a decade marked by economic progress but increasing jihadist threats.

DAILY TRUST8TH DECEMBER 2025Christian Genocide: U.S. lawmakers visit Nigeria on fact-finding missionA high-level delegation of U.S. lawmakers and diplomats visited Nigeria on Sunday as part of a security-focused fact-finding mission, reflecting rising concern in Washington over alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria. One of the lawmakers, Rep. Riley Moore, who has been outspoken about alleged religious persecution said the visit was undertaken “in the name of the Lord” and promised further details soon.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu confirmed he hosted the delegation in Abuja, following earlier engagements in Washington on shared security priorities. The delegation included Reps. Mario Díaz-Balart, Norma Torres, Scott Franklin, Juan Ciscomani, and Riley Moore, alongside the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills.

Discussions centred on counter-terrorism cooperation, regional security, and strengthening the Nigeria–U.S. strategic partnership. The visit comes at a time when U.S. lawmakers and institutions like USCIRF have intensified scrutiny of Nigeria’s security crisis, accusing the government of failing to stop what some describe as targeted attacks on Christian communities. Nigeria strongly rejects this framing, arguing that the violence is driven by terrorism, banditry, and resource conflict—not religious persecution.

The recent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the Trump administration continues to amplify international pressure on Abuja.

THIS DAY10TH DECEMBER 2025The Gale of defections hit PDP harder as Rivers State Governor Siminalaye Fubara and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke defect to APC and Accord Party respectivelyRivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), days after 17 state lawmakers also left the PDP. Fubara said the move was to protect the interests of Rivers State and acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for supporting and “restoring” his government during the recent political crisis. He stated that he received Tinubu’s full backing before making the switch and emphasised that he could now govern without external interference.

Meanwhile, in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke formally announced that he joined the Accord Party over a month ago and will run for re-election in 2026 on its platform. Adeleke said the Accord Party aligns with his focus on welfare and good governance, and that the party will serve as the new platform for continuity in the state.

Reacting to Fubara’s defection, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) criticised him, saying his political predicament was “self-inflicted.” The party accused the governor of willingly taking actions that led to his current situation and warned that democracy is being threatened by increasing federal influence and moves toward a one-party system.

THIS DAY15TH DECEMBER 2025Low voter turnout threatens the legitimacy of our democracy, says INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan at Situation Room's National Stakeholders Forum on ElectionsThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stressed that despite the introduction of technological innovations to improve Nigeria’s elections, low voter turnout remains a serious challenge. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, made the remarks at the National Stakeholders’ Forum on Elections organized by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room. He highlighted that the 27% turnout in the 2023 general elections underscores that technology alone cannot overcome voter apathy.

Amupitan emphasized that credible elections require a multi-sectoral, consensus-driven approach involving political parties, civil society, security agencies, the media, and INEC. While technological tools such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the IReV result portal enhance transparency and integrity, limitations in the telecommunications network and operational challenges at over 176,000 polling units remain obstacles.

Citing the Anambra off-season governorship election as a success story, he noted that proactive PVC collection measures increased voter participation from 63.9% to 98.8%. He also stressed the importance of political accountability, combating vote-buying, and strengthening election security through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). Amupitan concluded that building consensus for credible elections is an ongoing process that requires innovation, collaboration, and continuous engagement with stakeholders.

DAILY TRUST16TH DECEMBER 2025Internal rift threatens PDP as Sule Lamido pushes last-minute reconciliationFormer Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Sule Lamido, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be compelled to form alliances if ongoing efforts to resolve its internal leadership crisis fail. Speaking while hosting Jigawa PDP stakeholders in Kano, Lamido stressed the urgency of reconciliation to halt the party’s decline.

He said consultations were ongoing, including engagements with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, aimed at reconciling PDP governors and key actors. Lamido noted that patience was earlier requested pending a decision on the status of the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

Lamido cautioned that unresolved internal rivalries have weakened the PDP, benefited the APC, and contributed to poor electoral performance in places like Kano. He added that if reconciliation collapses, alliances not coalitions would become inevitable, potentially reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

Jigawa PDP Chairman, Dr Babandi Ibrahim, acknowledged the party’s uncertainty, noting that leadership disputes persist, with Damagum and Anyanwu still recognised on INEC’s platform.

DAILY TRUST16TH DECEMBER 2025Rivers Emergency Rule: Supreme Court affirms the President’s powers to declare a state of emergency and suspend elected officials, strikes out PDP's caseThe Supreme Court has affirmed that the President has constitutional authority to declare a state of emergency in any state to prevent a breakdown of law and order. In a six-to-one majority decision delivered on Monday, the apex court held that Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution empowers the President to take extraordinary measures during a state of emergency, including the suspension of elected state officials, provided such suspension is for a limited duration.

Justice Mohammed Idris, who delivered the lead judgment, ruled that the Constitution does not expressly define the scope of “extraordinary measures,” thereby granting the President discretion on actions necessary to restore normalcy.

The ruling followed a suit filed by PDP-governed states challenging President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the six-month suspension of elected officials. The plaintiffs argued that the action violated several constitutional provisions and amounted to unlawful interference with democratically elected state governments.

The Supreme Court upheld preliminary objections by the Federal Government and the National Assembly, ruling that the plaintiffs failed to establish a justiciable dispute capable of invoking the court’s original jurisdiction. The suit was consequently struck out and dismissed on the merits.

Justice Obande Ogbuinya dissented, agreeing that the President can declare a state of emergency but holding that such power does not extend to suspending elected governors, deputy governors, or state legislators.

VANGUARD16TH DECEMBER 2025Senate condemns multiple budget implementations in a fiscal year by Federal Government, urges normalisation by 2026The Senate has condemned the federal government’s practice of implementing multiple budgets within a single fiscal year, describing it as unacceptable and urging that the anomaly be corrected from 2026. The criticism followed revelations that only N10 trillion of the projected N40 trillion revenue for the 2025 budget had been realised, forcing the rollover of about 70 per cent of capital projects into 2026.

During an interactive session on the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), Finance Minister Wale Edun attributed the situation to revenue shortfalls, despite full revenue performance for the 2024 budget. Several senators faulted the government for presenting unrealistic budget proposals and questioned why approved borrowings were not used to bridge revenue gaps.

The Senate also urged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to raise its 2026 revenue target from N31 trillion to N35 trillion, noting that rising revenues were being undermined by repeated budget rollovers. While senators expressed strong displeasure, the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Sani Musa, assured that budget projections and implementation would be normalised from 2026.

THE GUARDIAN16TH DECEMBER 2025Governance reduced to optics – Ondo PDP criticises Governor Aiyedatiwa’s Statewide "Thank-You Tour" The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s statewide thank-you tour, describing it as a sign of failed governance and misplaced priorities. The PDP said the tour across the state’s 18 local government areas amounts to political optics and handouts rather than meaningful leadership, arguing that the governor should instead be commissioning completed projects.

In a statement by its Director of Media and Public Communications, Wande Ajayi, the PDP accused the APC-led government of abandoning development, citing poor conditions of schools, healthcare facilities, roads, and the hardship faced by civil servants and pensioners. The party claimed that many announced projects are barely 20 per cent complete, with Ondo State witnessing unusually slow project execution.

In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) defended the governor, saying the tour reflects humility, accessibility, and inclusive leadership. The party argued that the state’s challenges are linked to wider national and global economic conditions and maintained that the administration is pursuing responsible governance through social interventions alongside long-term development plans.

THE GUARDIAN17TH DECEMBER 2025U.S imposes partial visa restrictions on Nigeria and 14 other CountriesThe United States has partially suspended the issuance of certain immigrant and non-immigrant visas to Nigeria and 14 other countries, citing national security concerns, including the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State. Affected visa categories for Nigerians include B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2 (visitor visas), and F, M, and J (student and exchange visas).

The decision follows a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump expanding entry restrictions on countries deemed to have serious deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing. The U.S. also referenced Nigeria’s visa overstay rates as justification.

While some exemptions apply, such as for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats, athletes, and cases serving U.S. national interests, the policy tightens family-based immigration routes considered vulnerable to fraud. Nigeria was recently redesignated as a Country of Particular Concern over the persecution of Christians, and the move aligns with the reinstatement and expansion of Trump-era travel restrictions first upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

As part of the approval, lawmakers revised the crude oil benchmark for 2026 downward to $60 per barrel from the $64.85 proposed by the executive, citing global geopolitical tensions and oil market volatility. Benchmarks for subsequent years were set at $65 for 2027 and $70 for 2028.

The Senate endorsed a total federal expenditure of N54.46 trillion for 2026, alongside key macroeconomic projections, including an exchange rate of N1,512/$ and inflation at 16.5 per cent for the year. Inflation is expected to decline to 13 per cent in 2027 and 9 per cent in 2028, while real GDP growth is projected to rise steadily to 7.9 per cent by 2028.

Despite the conservative oil price outlook, crude oil production estimates were maintained at 1.84 million barrels per day for 2026, with gradual increases projected through 2028. The framework also provides for N17.88 trillion in new borrowing, N15.52 trillion in debt servicing, and a fiscal deficit of N20.13 trillion for 2026.

The Senate further approved major spending allocations for pensions, capital projects, statutory transfers, and a Sinking Fund, while endorsing tax reforms and a new National Scanning Policy aimed at boosting revenue, transparency, and trade efficiency.
