DAILY TRUST16TH JUNE 2026Kano 2027: APC Alleges ‘Third-Term Agenda’ as Kwankwaso's Son, Mustapha Emerges NDC Deputy Governorship CandidateThe nomination of Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as running mate to National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has triggered political controversy in Kano State.

Mustapha, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State, was unveiled as the NDC deputy governorship candidate during a party caucus meeting in Kano. The party said his selection was based on his performance in public office and track record as a businessman. Accepting the nomination, he pledged to work for the success of the party in the 2027 elections.

However, the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) described the development as evidence of what it called Senator Kwankwaso’s “third-term agenda.” APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa alleged that the former governor was seeking to maintain political control in the state through a proxy arrangement, claiming the nomination of his son was part of a broader plan to retain influence over Kano politics.

Doguwa further alleged that Kwankwaso had explored legal avenues to pursue a third term as governor in 2015, arguing that constitutional term limits applied only to consecutive tenures, although the effort was unsuccessful. He said the APC was not threatened by the development and remained confident of its chances in the 2027 elections.

The controversy comes amid heightened political rivalry in Kano following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the APC, a move that strained relations with the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Kwankwaso. While APC leaders view Mustapha Kwankwaso’s nomination as a succession strategy, neither Kwankwaso, his son, nor the NDC leadership had responded to the allegations as of the time of reporting.

The development places both father and son at the centre of the 2027 electoral contest, with Senator Kwankwaso serving as vice-presidential candidate on the NDC presidential ticket while his son seeks election as deputy governor in Kano State.

DAILY TRUST16TH JUNE 2026Former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi Emerges ADC Vice-Presidential Candidate, Joins Atiku on 2027 TicketThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, ending weeks of speculation. Amaechi will run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.

According to ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and stakeholders across Nigeria. The party cited his emergence as runner-up in the ADC presidential primaries, along with his extensive public service experience, as key factors in the decision.

The ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic partnership that combines national reach, governance experience, and political influence. It highlighted Amaechi’s record as former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and former Minister of Transportation.

The party said the ticket offers Nigerians a credible alternative for addressing the country’s economic, security, and governance challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Alhaji Munir Dan’iya, welcomed the choice, describing the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as a significant political development capable of promoting economic growth, national development, and improved security. He urged party members and supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 polls.

DAILY TRUST16TH JUNE 2026Ogun 2027: Iyabo Obasanjo Makes Surprise Return to PDP After Losing APC Governorship TicketFormer Ogun Central senator and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely a week after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her return became evident during the official unveiling of veteran journalist Dr. Lateefat Yemi Kolapo-Sowunmi as the running mate to PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election. Iyabo Obasanjo made a surprise appearance at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, where she joined party leaders in presenting the deputy governorship candidate and publicly demonstrated support for the party's ticket.

Party sources indicated that her formal reintegration into the PDP is expected to be completed at a reception scheduled for Tuesday.

Iyabo Obasanjo had joined the APC in January with ambitions to contest the Ogun governorship election. However, after failing to secure the party's ticket, she resigned from the APC, citing alleged disrespect, rejection, and maltreatment by the party leadership in Ogun State.

At the event, she urged voters to safeguard their votes during the 2027 elections and alleged that PDP candidate Ladi Adebutu was denied victory in previous governorship contests. She expressed confidence that the party would overcome such challenges in 2027.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lateefat Kolapo-Sowunmi accepted her nomination as deputy governorship candidate, thanking party leaders for the confidence reposed in her. She pledged loyalty to the PDP and Adebutu, promising to use her experience and commitment to support efforts aimed at rebuilding Ogun State.

VANGUARD16TH JUNE 2026‘There Was No Primary Election’ – Kwara APC Elders Challenge Candidate’s EmergenceA group of senior stakeholders under the APC Elders’ Caucus in Kwara State has rejected the emergence of Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election, warning that retaining him as flagbearer could cost the party the governorship seat.

Addressing journalists in Ilorin, the caucus leader, Chief James Bamisaiye Ayenioye, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC to revisit the outcome of the party’s governorship primary and consider presenting an alternative candidate. He argued that Danladi lacks the popularity and acceptance required to win a competitive election and accused some interests of creating a misleading impression of his support base.

The elders said their intervention was motivated by concerns over the party’s electoral prospects and insisted that remaining silent would amount to allowing the APC to move towards defeat. They also alleged that influential figures around the Presidency were attempting to impose an unpopular candidate on the party for personal and political reasons.

Supporting the position of the caucus, former Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Salman Jawondo (SAN), dismissed the governorship primary as illegitimate, claiming no credible election took place. He called for a fresh and properly organised primary process, warning that the opposition had gained significant ground and that the APC could lose the governorship election if Danladi remained the candidate.

The elders maintained that their criticism was not an act of rebellion but an effort to safeguard the future of the party in Kwara State. They reaffirmed their loyalty to President Tinubu and pledged continued support for his administration and re-election bid while urging the APC leadership to address the growing internal discontent before the 2027 elections.

DAILY TRUST16TH JUNE 2026Political Tensions Rise in Nasarawa as Ex-IGP Adamu’s Defection from APC Sparks APC-SDP Face-offThe Nasarawa State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aliyu Bello, has downplayed the impact of the defection of former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu Abubakar and his supporters, insisting that the ruling party remains politically strong and self-sufficient.

Bello made the remarks in Lafia while leading APC members in a symbolic sweeping exercise at Unguwar Gayam, an area where supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had earlier burned APC brooms in protest against the party’s leadership and internal processes.

The SDP supporters, led by Yahuza Musa Gayam, accused the APC of unfair treatment, alleging that the party denied Mohammed Adamu victory in an internal contest despite his reported success at the ward level. They described their actions as a protest against what they termed political injustice and likened their departure from the APC to an earlier split from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Responding to the criticism, Bello dismissed the protest as politically insignificant and accused the defectors of lacking political maturity. He said the APC’s commitment to peace stemmed from its confidence as the dominant political force in the state, while suggesting that the opposition's actions were driven by dissatisfaction over electoral losses.

The APC chairman also urged party supporters to remain vigilant during future elections, encouraging them to monitor voting and vote-counting processes through to the final collation stage. He emphasized that technological safeguards such as BVAS have strengthened the electoral process compared to previous election cycles.

DAILY TRUST16TH JUNE 2026APC Endorses Tinubu for Second Term, Denies Allegations of Federal Backing for PDP in Ebonyi StateThe National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu intends to support a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) victory in Ebonyi State, describing the allegation as false and baseless.

Speaking at a grand APC rally in Abakaliki organised to endorse President Tinubu for a second term, Yilwatda was responding to concerns raised by Governor Francis Nwifuru that some PDP leaders in the state were claiming that influential figures in the Federal Government had secured support for the opposition.

The APC chairman insisted that no such decision had been discussed and maintained that the PDP had no realistic chance of returning to power in Ebonyi. He urged party supporters to remain united behind the APC leadership and President Tinubu, whom he credited with making significant contributions to Ebonyi State and the South-East region.

Yilwatda also highlighted ongoing federal interventions in the region, particularly efforts to address longstanding infrastructure challenges, including road development.

Governor Nwifuru, in his remarks, said the rally was organised to appreciate Tinubu for projects and initiatives delivered to Ebonyi State and to publicly affirm the state's support for his re-election bid in 2027. He described the president's impact on the state as visible and beneficial to the people.

The event served as both an endorsement of Tinubu's second-term ambition and a demonstration of APC unity in Ebonyi amid growing political competition ahead of the 2027 elections.

THE GUARDIAN16TH JUNE 2026Federal High Court Adjourns El-Rufai’s Corruption Trial to June 24 Over Absence of Co-DefendantsA Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to June 24, 2026, after two co-defendants failed to appear in court.

El-Rufai is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and fraud during his tenure as governor. The former governor was present in court alongside security personnel and ICPC officials, but proceedings could not continue due to the absence of the other defendants.

The prosecution alleges that public funds were released for projects that were either not executed or were improperly managed under El-Rufai’s administration. However, the former governor has denied all allegations, insisting that his actions while in office were lawful.

Meanwhile, a coalition of women’s organisations in Kaduna State has called for respect for the constitutional rights of El-Rufai, his former Chief of Staff Bashir Saidu, and other associates facing investigations or legal proceedings. The groups expressed concern over what they described as political persecution and urged security agencies and anti-corruption bodies to remain impartial in carrying out their duties.

The coalition also warned against the selective application of justice and pledged to pursue lawful advocacy efforts to protect constitutional rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law. It further called on civil society organisations, the media, and democratic institutions to remain vigilant in safeguarding due process and fundamental rights.

The case is expected to resume on June 24, when the court will continue hearing the charges brought against the former governor and his co-defendants.

THE GUARDIAN16TH JUNE 2026House Committee Begins Review of Defence Bills Amid Security ConcernsThe House of Representatives has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s defence architecture, arguing that current security strategies have not adequately addressed the country's evolving security challenges.

Speaking at a public hearing on defence-related bills in Abuja, Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, said Nigeria requires urgent reforms and fresh approaches to defence management. He cited persistent threats including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence, separatist agitations, cybercrime, and maritime piracy as evidence that existing security frameworks require modernization.

According to Abbas, the proposed legislation seeks to reform the Armed Forces Act, improve veterans' welfare, enhance gender inclusion in the military, and strengthen institutional support mechanisms to improve operational effectiveness and accountability within the defence sector.

Meanwhile, former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, argued that the creation of state police, while necessary, would not by itself resolve Nigeria’s security challenges. In an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, governors, and the public, she contended that the country’s insecurity stems from deeper constitutional, governance, and political economy issues.

Ezekwesili maintained that Nigeria's security crisis reflects broader weaknesses in state capacity and public institutions, rather than solely a policing problem. She argued that the country's highly centralised constitutional structure concentrates excessive authority and resources at the federal level, limiting the effectiveness of governance and security responses.

While acknowledging widespread concerns over insecurity, she called for broader constitutional restructuring, insisting that state police represent only one aspect of the reforms needed to address the root causes of instability and strengthen Nigeria's federal system.

THE GUARDIAN16TH JUNE 2026Reps Extend 2025 Capital Budget Implementation as BudgIT Warns of Fiscal Risks in 2026 BudgetThe House of Representatives has approved a fresh extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026.

The approval followed the passage of the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026, during an emergency plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Leading the debate, House Leader Julius Ihonvbere said the extension was necessary because significant funds released to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) remained unspent due to procurement delays, administrative bottlenecks, and implementation challenges.

Lawmakers argued that the additional three months would help prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructure projects, facilitate the completion of ongoing projects, and allow for the settlement of outstanding obligations under the 2025 budget.

Meanwhile, civic technology organisation BudgIT has expressed concerns over the Federal Government’s 2026 budget framework, describing it as overly ambitious and difficult to implement under current economic realities.

According to BudgIT, the proposed budget projects total expenditure of ₦68.32 trillion against expected revenue of ₦36.87 trillion, resulting in a fiscal deficit of ₦31.45 trillion. The organisation noted that the deficit exceeds the three per cent GDP threshold prescribed by the Fiscal Responsibility Act and would require substantial borrowing to finance nearly half of the planned expenditure.

BudgIT further warned that Nigeria's growing debt burden could undermine the effectiveness of planned capital investments. While acknowledging the government's commitment to infrastructure development through a projected capital expenditure of ₦32.28 trillion, the organisation noted that debt servicing obligations estimated at ₦15.8 trillion could significantly constrain fiscal space.

THE GUARDIAN16TH JUNE 2026IPOB Reacts to Soludo–Obi Disagreement Over Kanu’s Release, Calls Stance ‘Political Desperation’The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, over his government's rejection of calls by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

The controversy followed comments by Soludo's Special Adviser on Media, Ejimofor Opara, who faulted Obi's position and argued that calls for Kanu's release undermined judicial processes. Opara also referenced the conviction of Simon Ekpa in Finland, describing him as Kanu's protégé.

In response, IPOB described Soludo's stance as a betrayal, hypocrisy, and political desperation. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group accused the governor of reversing his earlier support for Kanu's release after benefiting politically from the agitation. IPOB recalled that Soludo had visited Kanu in detention in 2022 and publicly called for his release, while members of his administration had also previously advocated the same position.

The group argued that Soludo's criticism of Obi contradicted his past statements and actions, alleging that the governor had abandoned a cause he once supported. IPOB further maintained that calls for Kanu's release extend beyond the South-East and have been made by various Nigerians concerned about justice and due process.

THE GUARDIAN16TH JUNE 2026War on Terrorism: Courts Convict Terror Financier, Boko Haram Informants Amid Mass TrialsThe Federal Government has commenced a new phase of terrorism-related prosecutions, arraigning more than 600 suspects before the Federal High Court in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity across the country.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said the prosecutions demonstrate the government's resolve to confront terrorism and ensure that acts of terror are not tolerated. He disclosed that about 490 suspects were arraigned on the first day of proceedings, with an additional 84 expected to appear in court subsequently, excluding over 100 pending cases from previous phases.

Alongside the mass trials, the courts secured several convictions. Justice Binta Nyako and Justice Emeka Nwite handed down prison sentences to individuals who pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences, including financing terrorism and concealing information about terrorist activities.

Among those convicted was Umar Bashir, a Maiduguri-based businessman, who received a 20-year prison sentence without the option of a fine after admitting to facilitating financial transactions for Boko Haram members. Another convict, Ali Mustapha, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for concealing information about Boko Haram activities.

The court also sentenced Bello Liman, popularly known as "Alhaji Bello Doctor," to a combined 30-year term for concealing information that could have aided the arrest of a wanted terrorist leader. His sentences are to run concurrently from the date of his arrest and will be followed by rehabilitation and deradicalisation measures.

In a separate case, Isa Isiaka, a farmer and father of 11, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to withholding information that could have led to the arrest of Boko Haram members. The court rejected appeals for leniency, stressing the seriousness of terrorism-related offences.

The latest prosecutions form part of the fourth phase of terrorism trials under the Tinubu administration and underscore the government's continued efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, prosecute offenders, and strengthen national security.

PREMIUM TIMES16TH JUNE 2026Military Allegedly Rescues Widow of Late General Rabe Abubakar During Katsina OperationThe Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the rescue of Amina Abubakar, wife of the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, during ongoing military operations against bandits in Katsina State.

Mrs Abubakar was abducted alongside her husband on 30 May along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area. Her rescue comes two days after the retired officer, a former Director of Defence Information, was confirmed dead in captivity.

According to the DHQ, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, rescued her during intensified search-and-rescue operations. Troops reportedly engaged the bandits at Tunga Village, forcing them to flee. During the encounter, the kidnappers shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her under pressure from advancing troops.

The military said she was evacuated to a military medical facility and is responding positively to treatment.

Her rescue forms part of Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, a military offensive launched after the abduction and death of the retired general. The operation targets terrorist and bandit hideouts across Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities, with troops conducting intelligence-led raids and clearance operations.

The Armed Forces said efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and killing of General Abubakar and to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.

THE GUARDIAN10TH JUNE 2026Senate Leader Proposes One-Term, Six-Year Tenure for President, Governors After 2027 ElectionsSenate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has disclosed that the National Assembly may consider constitutional amendments introducing a single six-year term for presidents and state governors, alongside proposals for the establishment of state police.

Speaking ahead of the third anniversary of the 10th Senate, Bamidele argued that a single tenure would allow elected leaders to focus on governance from the outset without the distraction of seeking re-election. He also defended the Senate's collaborative relationship with the executive, rejecting claims that the legislature functions as a rubber stamp for the administration of Bola Tinubu.

The Senate Leader further justified the National Assembly's decision not to launch a fresh public probe into military spending on counterterrorism operations, arguing that such an investigation could undermine ongoing security efforts. He maintained that existing legislative oversight mechanisms already provide accountability through regular scrutiny by defence-related committees.

Separately, Gani Adams renewed calls for the creation of state and local government police forces, describing Nigeria's centralised policing structure as inadequate for addressing growing security threats. Speaking at a conference organised by Yoruba One Voice, Adams cited recent kidnappings and violent crimes in the South-West as evidence of the need for decentralised policing.

Supporting the debate, retired Major General Ishola Williams argued that Nigeria's challenge lies more in public safety and weak intelligence coordination than in the absence of security structures. He also called for greater accountability in the use of state security votes.

Meanwhile, the Open Alliance urged policymakers to ensure that any move towards state policing is accompanied by strong accountability, transparency, human rights safeguards, and citizen participation. Following a stakeholder dialogue in Abuja, the coalition stressed that state police should form part of broader security sector reforms rather than being viewed as a standalone solution.

The proposals are expected to feature prominently in ongoing constitutional amendment discussions as lawmakers seek reforms aimed at improving governance and addressing Nigeria's persistent security challenges.

THE GUARDIAN10TH JUNE 2026INEC Appeals Court Decisions, Warns Rulings on 2027 Election Timetable Could Disrupt Poll PreparationsThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned that recent Federal High Court judgments challenging aspects of its 2027 election timetable could disrupt preparations for the general elections unless appellate courts provide urgent clarification.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed that the commission has appealed two court rulings that questioned timelines relating to party primaries, candidate nominations, and substitutions. While the courts affirmed INEC's authority to issue election timetables, they held that the commission cannot use administrative guidelines to override statutory timelines provided in the Electoral Act.

The dispute has created uncertainty over the status of candidates produced by parties that conducted primaries after INEC's May 30, 2026 deadline. Depending on the outcome of the appeals, some candidates could face legal challenges, while others may seek recognition through fresh litigation.

Political stakeholders and election experts have warned that prolonged legal uncertainty could affect campaign schedules, candidate lists, voter education programmes, and other critical electoral preparations ahead of the January and February 2027 elections.

Former Senate Minority Leader Olorunnimbe Mamora and former INEC National Commissioner Lai Olurode urged the Court of Appeal to expedite the matter to prevent confusion and avoid disruptions to the electoral process.

The controversy has also reignited debates over electoral reforms, with the Inter-Party Advisory Council calling for a review of the Electoral Act and the restoration of indirect primaries, which it says would give political parties greater flexibility in managing internal contests.

The appeals are expected to have significant implications for INEC's authority to regulate election activities and could shape the framework for future electoral administration in Nigeria.

Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo, Adeleke accused supporters of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, and APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji of sponsoring violence in parts of the state. He alleged that armed thugs had carried out shootings in Ile-Ife, Osogbo, and Ede, creating tension and insecurity.

The governor appealed to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, the Department of State Services, and other security agencies to take proactive measures to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

In response, the APC Governorship Campaign Council condemned what it described as increasing politically motivated attacks against its supporters and members, alleging that its candidate's campaign was being targeted.

Amid the escalating tensions, the Osun State Police Command directed all political parties and candidates to suspend rallies, processions, and other political activities in Oriade Local Government Area following intelligence reports indicating potential security threats. The police said previous efforts to broker peace among political actors had failed and urged all stakeholders to comply with the directive in the interest of public safety.

DAILY TRUST10TH JUNE 2026INEC Revises PDP Leadership Records, Consolidates Recognition of Wike CampThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has updated its records for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), removing Ahmed Yayari and Daniel Woyengikuro as National Treasurer and National Financial Secretary, respectively, and replacing them with Odeyemi Mackson Oladiran and Eyim Donatus Henry.

The move aligns INEC's portal more closely with the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The newly listed officials emerged from the PDP national convention held in Abuja on March 29, where several national officers were elected by consensus.

The removed officials were associated with the faction backed by Seyi Makinde and led by Kabiru Turaki, while the replacements are aligned with the Wike camp.

INEC's updated portal also continues to recognise Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu, both figures linked to the Wike-backed bloc.

The revision resolves earlier inconsistencies in INEC's records, which had contained a mix of officials from rival PDP factions and fueled uncertainty over the party's national leadership structure.

The suit was filed by APC chairmanship aspirant Abdulhadi Lau, who is challenging the conduct and outcome of the primary election. Lau alleges that he was unlawfully excluded from participating in the exercise despite meeting all requirements set by the party.

According to the claimant, he purchased nomination forms, completed the necessary procedures, and was duly qualified to contest but was denied participation without justification. He argues that the action violated both his rights and principles of internal party democracy.

Justice Mashkur Salisu adjourned the matter after the defendants allegedly failed to file and serve their statements of defence within the stipulated timeframe.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Josiah Amupitan, said the commission is transitioning from the primary election stage to candidate nominations and urged parties to prepare their ICT teams ahead of submission deadlines, noting that the portal will close automatically once the prescribed period expires.

The commission also defended its 2027 election timetable amid recent Federal High Court judgments that questioned aspects of its deadlines for nomination and substitution of candidates. Amupitan said INEC has appealed the rulings, arguing that electoral activities are interconnected and require coordinated timelines to ensure orderly and credible elections.

On preparations for the June 20 Ekiti governorship election, INEC said it is ready for the poll, with 1,059,360 registered voters and arrangements in place for the simultaneous opening of all 2,445 polling units across the state.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) called for a review of the Electoral Act 2026, arguing that the removal of indirect primaries created significant challenges during party primaries. THIS DAY10TH JUNE 2026SDP Crisis: Gombe Defends Party Expulsions, Insists INEC Cannot Decide SDP LeadershipThe National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Abubakar Sadiq Gombe, has insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no constitutional authority to determine the leadership of political parties through its online portal.

Speaking after a consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja, Gombe said leadership issues within the SDP are governed by the party’s constitution and its internal organs, particularly the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC), not by records displayed on INEC’s portal.

He defended the expulsion of former SDP National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and two other officials, saying the disciplinary process followed due procedure and that the affected members failed to appeal within the timeframe provided by the party’s constitution.

Gombe cited Supreme Court rulings affirming that internal party affairs are outside INEC’s regulatory jurisdiction and welcomed what he described as INEC’s commitment to respecting the autonomy of political parties under the leadership of Joash Amupitan.

The remarks come amid ongoing leadership disputes within the SDP and debates over which faction should be officially recognised.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives summoned the Minister of Finance, the National Security Adviser, service chiefs, the DSS Director-General and the Inspector-General of Police to explain measures being taken to address worsening insecurity nationwide. Lawmakers also called for more aggressive security strategies, the recruitment of forest guards, improved surveillance technology, and renewed consideration of state police.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, announced the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General to geopolitical zones to strengthen security operations and directed commissioners of police to establish cross-border patrols to tackle criminals operating across state boundaries. Security concerns were further heightened by reports of deadly bandit attacks, kidnappings and school abductions across several northern states.

THIS DAY10TH JUNE 2026SGF Recalls Atiku’s Role in PDP Decision to Alternate Presidential PowerSecretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has revealed that Atiku Abubakar was among senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figures who supported the adoption of rotational presidency following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Speaking at a Democracy Day press conference in Abuja, Akume said PDP leaders, led by Solomon Lar and Adamu Ciroma, held discussions aimed at preserving national unity and addressing the political consequences of the annulled election won by Moshood Abiola.

According to Akume, the meeting eventually produced a consensus on alternating presidential power between Northern and Southern Nigeria, despite initial disagreements among participants. He said Atiku was part of the leaders who endorsed the arrangement.

The SGF explained that the power rotation principle was introduced to promote inclusiveness, national cohesion, and political stability in the aftermath of the June 12 crisis.

Akume also described the June 12 election as the freest in Nigeria’s history and said one of its enduring lessons is the supremacy of the people's will in a democracy. He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly Independent National Electoral Commission, and maintained that the country would never again permit the annulment of a democratic election.

THE GUARDIAN10TH JUNE 2026‘Nigerians Deserve Answers’ – Peter Obi Queries Debt Accumulation Under President Tinubu's AdministrationThe 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over what he described as excessive borrowing and a lack of transparency in the management of public debt.

Obi claimed Nigeria’s total debt has risen to about N200 trillion under the current administration, representing an increase of more than N100 trillion in less than three years. He contrasted this with the debt accumulated during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Citing data from the Federation’s Budget Office, Obi alleged that the government borrowed N11.89 trillion during the first three quarters of 2025, exceeding its planned borrowing target of N10.34 trillion. He argued that such an overrun should attract public scrutiny and official explanations.

The former Anambra governor also questioned the utilisation of the borrowed funds, noting that only N3.10 trillion was reportedly allocated to capital expenditure during the period, leaving a substantial gap in planned infrastructure and development spending.

Obi called for greater accountability and transparency from the government, insisting that Nigerians deserve a clear explanation of how the borrowed funds were spent and whether they were used for productive investments or recurrent expenditures.

DAILY TRUST10TH JUNE 2026APC Chieftain Warns Against Altering Primary Results Ahead of 2027 ElectionsThe National Leader of the Grassroot Governance Performance Awareness Network Initiative and Tinubu support group, Korede Quadri, has cautioned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress against any attempt to alter the outcome of its recently concluded primary elections.

Quadri urged the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure that only candidates who emerged victorious in the primaries are submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections.

While commending President Bola Tinubu, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, and the party leadership for conducting what he described as a transparent primary process, Quadri expressed concern over reports that some unsuccessful aspirants may be seeking to replace duly elected candidates.

He warned that any substitution of candidates who legitimately won primaries could undermine internal party democracy, erode confidence in the APC leadership, and trigger avoidable disputes and litigation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Quadri further argued that allegations of attempts to manipulate primary outcomes in favour of defeated aspirants, if proven true, could damage the credibility of the party and weaken members’ trust in its leadership.

THIS DAY9TH JUNE 20262027 Presidency: Focus Shifts to Running Mates as Atiku Weighs Amaechi, Ihedioha, Okonjo-Iweala for VP SlotWith the deadline for the emergence of presidential candidates concluded, attention has shifted to the selection of vice-presidential candidates ahead of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election.

While some candidates have already named running mates, including Peter Obi, who selected Rabiu Kwankwaso, several major contenders are still weighing their options.

There is uncertainty over whether Bola Tinubu will retain Kashim Shettima as his running mate, particularly amid renewed calls for greater religious balance in presidential tickets.

Sources within the camp of Atiku Abubakar indicate that considerations for his running mate include Rauf Aregbesola, Chibuike Amaechi, Emeka Ihedioha, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Political strategists within the party are reportedly prioritising regional appeal and religious balance, with concerns that a Muslim-Muslim ticket could be politically risky.

Elsewhere, Gbenga Hashim is said to be considering a running mate from Edo State, while Labour Party candidate Chibuzor Okereke is expected to choose a northern Muslim running mate.

Within the PDP, Goodluck Jonathan has emerged as the party's presidential candidate but has yet to formally accept the nomination. Meanwhile, Seyi Makinde is pursuing his presidential ambition on the APM platform, with speculation continuing over whether Bala Mohammed could eventually join his ticket despite securing a senatorial nomination.

According to the party, the inauguration will take place on Wednesday at the Kashim Shettima Hall of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. The council is expected to coordinate campaign activities, mobilise party supporters, and engage stakeholders across Ekiti State.

The APC named Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani as chairman of the council, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio will serve as co-chairman. Senate Majority Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele was appointed secretary.

The party also announced the creation of several subcommittees covering key areas such as election planning, finance, grassroots mobilisation, logistics, media and publicity, security, women and youth mobilisation, and secretariat functions.

The APC is seeking to retain control of Ekiti State through incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who emerged as the party's consensus candidate in October 2025 and is seeking a second term in office. DAILY TRUST9TH JUNE 2026Crisis Erupts in Kano NDC Over Seat-Sharing Deal Between Kwankwaso Bloc and Founding MembersA fresh crisis has emerged within the Kano chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over the implementation of a power-sharing arrangement between founding party members and supporters of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who recently joined the party.

The dispute centres on an alleged agreement that allocated 60 per cent of party and elective positions to the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 40 per cent to existing NDC members. Founding members claim the agreement was not honoured during the selection of party executives and candidates, leading to accusations of marginalisation.

Following complaints from the old guard, the party reportedly reassigned five House of Representatives tickets and seven state assembly candidacies from Kwankwaso-backed nominees to members of the original NDC bloc. Party officials in Kano argue that even with those adjustments, they have not received their agreed share of positions and may seek additional allocations.

The crisis revives tensions that surfaced shortly after Kwankwaso joined the party, when concerns were raised about control of the party structure in Kano. Although an earlier intervention by the national leadership produced a compromise, disagreements over candidate selection have reopened old wounds.

However, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has rejected claims of exclusion. Its spokesperson, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, insisted that all stakeholders were involved throughout the consensus process and questioned why objections were being raised days after candidates had already been announced.

Amid the controversy, the NDC's National Executive Committee announced measures to strengthen party discipline, including the establishment of a code of conduct, a reconciliation committee, and stricter oversight of affiliated groups. The party also reaffirmed its commitment to building an institution-driven organisation rather than a personality-based movement.

Political analyst Kabiru Sa'id Sufi warned that if unresolved, the Kano crisis could weaken support for the presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, particularly in Kano, which is considered a strategic stronghold in northern Nigeria. He noted that prolonged dissatisfaction or possible defections could affect the party's electoral prospects ahead of the next general election.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Office in Abuja shortly after the president received Michael Randrianirina on a courtesy visit. Senior government officials, including Usman Ododo and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, witnessed the event.

Mr Tegbe, a former senior partner at KPMG Africa, brings more than 35 years of experience in fiscal, economic and institutional reforms across both public and private sectors. He succeeds Adebayo Adelabu, who resigned to contest the APC governorship primary in Oyo State.

Mr Enikanolaiye, a veteran diplomat and former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, replaces Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. Before his appointment, he served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations and previously represented Nigeria in several diplomatic missions, including as High Commissioner to India.

Both ministers were screened and confirmed by the Senate in May, and their inauguration formally marks the commencement of their duties as members of the Federal Executive Council.

DAILY TRUST9TH JUNE 2026Ondo 2027: Ipinsagba Denies Losing APC Senate Primary, Says Official Results Yet to Be ReleasedThe senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Olajide Ipinsagba, has dismissed reports claiming he lost the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election, insisting that the party has yet to officially announce the results.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Prince Adeyinka Ajagunna, the lawmaker described reports suggesting the end of his political career as false, mischievous, and premature. He noted that the APC National Secretariat in Abuja had not released the official outcome of the primary election.

The statement highlighted Ipinsagba's record since assuming office in 2023, citing rural road projects, healthcare interventions, educational support programmes, and sustained constituency engagement across the six local government areas of Ondo North.

According to the senator's camp, his influence extends beyond local politics through relationships within the National Assembly and the executive arm of government, which have helped attract federal projects and investments to the district.

The statement further stressed that Ipinsagba's political journey and service to Ondo North would not be defined by a primary election whose results remain officially unannounced. It added that he remains committed to development, youth empowerment, and accountable representation.

While thanking constituents for their support, the senator assured residents that he would continue serving the district and working towards addressing developmental challenges in the area.

DAILY TRUST9TH JUNE 2026Former Labour Party Presidential Aspirant Sues Party, Demands Refund of Convention Sponsorship FundsA former Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Agada, has filed a lawsuit against the party, seeking a refund of funds he allegedly spent sponsoring its national convention in Umuahia and accusing the party leadership of deception and unfair treatment.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Agada said he had already served the party with court documents. He alleged that Labour Party officials persuaded him to finance the party's national convention with assurances that he would be able to contest for the party's presidential ticket.

According to him, after successfully passing the party's screening process on May 6, 2026, he began building nationwide campaign structures in preparation for the presidential primary. However, he claimed that just one day before the primary election, the party informed him that he had been disqualified because the presidential ticket had been zoned to the South.

Agada, who has since defected to the Young Progressives Party, accused the Labour Party leadership of fraud, betrayal, insincerity, and tribalism. He further argued that the party's screening committee had reportedly advised that there was no provision for zoning in the party's constitution.

The former aspirant maintains that he incurred substantial expenses based on assurances from party leaders and is now seeking legal redress over what he describes as a breach of trust and financial exploitation.

The Labour Party had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the report.

DAILY TRUST9TH JUNE 2026ADC Leadership Crisis Deepens as Pro-Mark Supporters Protest as Court Sets June 16 for Recusal RulingSupporters of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress led by David Mark staged a protest outside the Federal High Court in Abuja, urging the judiciary not to be used to undermine opposition parties amid the party's ongoing leadership crisis.

The protest is linked to a legal dispute between the faction led by Nafiu Bala-Gombe and the rival leadership headed by Mark. Demonstrators alleged that the court case is being used as a distraction aimed at weakening the opposition party.

Meanwhile, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court has fixed June 16, 2026, to rule on applications seeking his recusal from the case over allegations of bias. Several parties in the suit, including the ADC, Rauf Aregbesola, and other interested parties, have requested that he step aside, transfer the case, or stay proceedings.

The leadership dispute began when former ADC Deputy National Chairman Nafiu challenged the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee. The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, which returned it to the Federal High Court in April 2026 for accelerated hearing.

Following the elevation of the original trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, to the Court of Appeal, the case was reassigned by Chief Judge John Tsoho to Justice Lifu, who subsequently ordered an accelerated trial.

The outcome of the June 16 ruling is expected to determine whether Justice Lifu will continue presiding over the case and could significantly influence the trajectory of the ADC's internal leadership battle ahead of future political contests.

PUNCH9TH JUNE 2026Osun APC Hit by Fresh Resignations as Omisore Allies Exit Ahead of Governorship PollThe All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has suffered another round of defections following the resignation of former House of Representatives member Ismaila Kolawole and former state lawmaker Olajide Adeyeye.

Kolawole, an ally of former APC National Secretary Iyiola Omisore, said he was leaving the party for "personal peace, inner mind rest and self-respect." Adeyeye also announced his resignation after what he described as thorough consideration, though he did not provide specific reasons for his decision.

Their exits add to a growing list of APC members linked to Omisore who have recently left the party, including several prominent political figures and grassroots leaders.

Reacting to the defections, Osun APC spokesman Kola Olabisi dismissed suggestions that the resignations would weaken the party's prospects in the August 15 governorship election. He argued that the departures were politically motivated attempts to create the impression of a crisis within the party and maintained that the APC remained focused on securing victory for its governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

Similarly, APC chieftain Olatunbosun Oyintiloye described the defections as a normal feature of election seasons and insisted they posed no threat to the party's electoral chances. He said the APC retained a strong grassroots structure across the state and argued that Oyebamiji's candidacy had energized party supporters and expanded its appeal among voters.

The developments come as political parties intensify preparations for the upcoming Osun governorship election, with defections and realignments increasingly shaping the pre-election landscape.

THIS DAY9TH JUNE 2026Situation Room Partner, CISLAC Calls for National Emergency on Insecurity, Condemns Rising AbductionsThe Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has called on the federal government to declare a national emergency on insecurity amid escalating kidnappings, banditry, and violent attacks across Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview, CISLAC Executive Director, Auwal Rafsanjani, expressed concern over the worsening security situation, particularly the increasing abduction of schoolchildren and attacks on rural communities. He warned that the trend is eroding public confidence, disrupting education, and creating fear among students, parents, and vulnerable populations.

Rafsanjani cited findings from an April 2026 report by Amnesty International, which indicated that at least 1,100 people were abducted in northern Nigeria between January and April 2026, especially in rural communities and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. He noted that the number has likely increased following more recent incidents of mass abductions.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, Rafsanjani urged the federal government to take immediate, coordinated, and decisive action to address the growing security crisis. He also called on citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and report suspicious activities within their communities.

The advocacy group maintains that urgent intervention is necessary to stem the rising wave of violence and restore public confidence in the country's security architecture.

THIS DAY9TH JUNE 2026Federal High Court Judge Withdraws from $42.5m Ecobank Fraud Trial After Misconduct PetitionThe trial of British national Marcus Wade and Indian businessmen Prem Garg and Devashish Garg over an alleged $42.48 million fraud against Ecobank Nigeria suffered a major setback on Tuesday after Justice Akintayo Aluko withdrew from the case at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The defendants, alongside their companies Wilben Trade Limited and Agrico Agbe Limited, are accused of conspiring to defraud Ecobank between May and September 2015 through a purported rice importation scheme. The case, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, includes charges of conspiracy, fraud, and obtaining by false pretence.

At the latest hearing, none of the defendants appeared in court, continuing a pattern that has delayed the proceedings since 2022 and prevented them from entering pleas. During the session, Justice Aluko revealed that he had received a petition accusing him of misconduct and bias over an earlier adjournment in the matter.

The judge rejected the allegations, insisting he had handled the case impartially and in accordance with due process. However, citing the petition and in the interest of justice, he announced his recusal from the case. Justice Aluko subsequently ordered that the case file be returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment, paving the way for a new judge to take over a trial already plagued by delays and procedural challenges.

The controversy arose after Lere Olayinka, media aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, shared details from an INEC administrative portal, prompting Ike to threaten legal action.

INEC said preliminary findings show there was no hacking or external breach of its systems; rather, the information was accessed using valid credentials assigned to personnel involved in the ongoing CVR exercise and subsequently released without authorization.

The commission has identified the user account involved, questioned relevant personnel, and pledged to take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is established. INEC also disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) has launched a separate investigation while assuring Nigerians that the incident does not compromise the broader voter database or the personal information of over 90 million registered voters.

THE NATION3RD JUNE 2026ADC Leadership Crisis Deepens as Aregbesola Seeks Judge’s Recusal in Suit Challenging David Mark-Led LeadershipThe leadership dispute within the ADC has taken a new turn as the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, formally requested the recusal of Justice Peter Lifu from a suit challenging the legitimacy of the David Mark-led leadership of the party.

Aregbesola argued that he lacks confidence in the judge’s impartiality, citing previous rulings in a separate case involving the ADC which he claimed were adverse to the party and contrary to established legal principles. He further alleged that the court refused to stay proceedings despite being notified of a pending appeal, prompting the Court of Appeal to later intervene and halt further proceedings.

The suit was originally filed by former ADC Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, and was reassigned to Justice Lifu after the plaintiff sought the withdrawal of the previous judge, Justice Emeka Nwite.

His remarks sparked speculation about possible political negotiations, reconciliations, appointments, substitutions or other arrangements for affected lawmakers.

The comments came as the chamber reconvened amid mixed emotions following contentious party primaries that saw several senators lose tickets while others secured renomination.

Meanwhile, the Kogi East APC Elites Forum cautioned against external interference in the district’s senatorial race, urging party leaders to allow local stakeholders determine the outcome through democratic processes. DAILY TRUST3RD JUNE 2026ADC Ogun Primary Crisis: Committee Chairman Overturns Lawal’s Victory, Declares Ogundipe Authentic Governorship CandidateA leadership crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State after two conflicting results emerged from the party’s governorship primary election. While the committee secretary, Barrister Adebimpe Adelowo, earlier announced former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s ally, Jimi Lawal, as the winner with 19,428 votes, the chairman of the electoral committee, Adeniyi Adams, has rejected the declaration and declared Dr. Biodun Collins Ogundipe (BCO) as the authentic winner.

Adams stated that the committee’s certified results showed Ogundipe secured 9,370 votes, ahead of Lawal’s 6,812 votes and Marie Abolaji Odusina’s 2,349 votes. He explained that results from Sagamu and Ijebu East were cancelled over alleged over-voting and mutilated result sheets, while reruns were conducted in Yewa South and Ado-Odo/Ota to preserve the integrity of the process.

Insisting that only the committee chairman is authorized to announce final results, Adams described the earlier declaration in favour of Lawal as unauthorized and disclosed that he had submitted the official report to the party’s national secretariat. DAILY TRUST3RD JUNE 2026Fresh Crisis Rocks Kaduna ADC as Appeal Committee Members Issue Conflicting Verdicts on Governorship CandidateThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State has been plunged into a fresh internal crisis after members of the party’s Governorship Primary Election Appeal Committee announced conflicting decisions on who should emerge as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

The controversy erupted after the committee’s secretary, Dr. Mikailu Ibrahim Barau, and some members affirmed Isa Ashiru as the duly elected candidate, insisting that the original primary election results remain valid. Barau rejected what he described as the “Abuja Declaration,” which allegedly substituted Ashiru’s name, arguing that the decision was procedurally flawed and did not reflect the collective position of the committee. He maintained that only the party’s national leadership has the authority to approve or substitute candidates and called for a review of the committee’s official report and petitions submitted during the appeal process.

However, in a separate announcement, the committee chairman, Dr. Mustapha Fagge, declared Shu’aibu Idris-Mikat as the ADC governorship candidate, stating that the appeal panel upheld his emergence after reviewing petitions and evidence presented by aggrieved aspirants. According to Fagge, the committee found that Idris-Mikat secured the highest number of valid votes and uncovered irregularities and alleged fraudulent activities linked to some rival aspirants.

The conflicting declarations have deepened uncertainty over the party’s governorship ticket in Kaduna, setting the stage for a possible intervention by the ADC national leadership to resolve the dispute ahead of the 2027 elections.

Justice Kunaza N. Hamidu vacated the ex-parte order during proceedings in a suit filed by Barr. Idrees Safiyanu Gambo against the PRP, Senator Shehu Buba Umar and INEC. PREMIUM TIMES2ND JUNE 2026Aftermath of APC Primaries: National Assembly Resumes Amid Major Shake-Up as Dozens of Senators, Reps Lose TicketsThe National Assembly resumes plenary today after a four-week recess, with the political landscape within both chambers dramatically altered by the outcome of party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ruling APC recorded widespread casualties during its primaries, with at least 20 serving senators and more than 50 members of the House of Representatives failing to secure return tickets, while several others were disqualified under the new anti-defection provisions of the Electoral Act.

Among the senators affected were Ned Nwoko, who lost the APC ticket in Delta North, Neda Imasuen, Isah Jibrin, Olubiyi Fadeyi, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, Danjuma Goje and Osita Izunaso, whose re-election ambitions were cut short during the primaries.

Several lawmakers who recently defected to the APC were also prevented from contesting due to the amended Electoral Act, which bars politicians from switching parties after membership registers have been submitted to INEC for the same election cycle.

The House of Representatives witnessed even heavier losses. Among the most prominent casualties was House Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, who finished third in his primary election. Other notable lawmakers who lost their tickets include Nicholas Mutu, one of the longest-serving members of the House, and Yusuf Gagdi.

Cross River, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Jigawa, Imo and Rivers states recorded some of the highest numbers of lawmakers displaced during the primaries, reflecting intense internal party battles and shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite the upheaval, several key figures secured their tickets and are expected to return to the National Assembly. They include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

The outcome of the primaries has set the stage for a potentially tense final legislative session, with attention now turning to whether lawmakers who lost renomination bids will remain aligned with party leadership or adopt new political positions as their parliamentary careers near an end.

VANGUARD2ND JUNE 2026ADC Primary: Atiku Camp Dismisses Babachir Lawal’s Rigging Claims, Demands EvidenceThe camp of Atiku Abubakar has rejected allegations by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary was manipulated.

In a statement issued by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former Vice President’s camp described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, arguing that Lawal failed to provide any evidence to support his claims.

The response followed Lawal’s resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), during which he criticised the conduct of the party’s presidential primary and alleged that the outcome had been influenced.

According to Atiku’s camp, the primary election was conducted across thousands of wards and produced a clear outcome that reflected the will of party members. Shaibu argued that Lawal had presented no documents, witnesses, or verifiable facts to substantiate allegations of irregularities.

The statement also questioned Lawal’s criticism of the process, noting that he appeared to accept outcomes from the same exercise in contests that favoured individuals close to him, including the emergence of his cousin, Omar Suleiman, as the party’s governorship candidate in Adamawa State.

Atiku’s camp maintained that dissatisfaction with the outcome does not invalidate a democratic process and warned against introducing ethnic or religious sentiments into internal party disputes. It insisted that the former Vice President remains focused on national issues and preparations for the 2027 general election.

PREMIUM TIMES1ST JUNE 2026Controversy Trails NDC Primary Elections as Aisha Yesufu Alleges Manipulation, Obi Emerges Presidential CandidateControversy has trailed the primary elections of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after activist-turned-politician Aisha Yesufu alleged that the party's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial primary was manipulated against her.

Yesufu, who contested the party's FCT Senate ticket, claimed that the exercise was characterised by repeated postponements, last-minute venue changes, and deviations from the party's guidelines. She alleged that a delegate-based process was introduced in place of the planned direct primaries and that the eventual outcome was determined behind closed doors rather than through an open voting process. According to her, the primary amounted to a predetermined exercise disguised as a democratic contest.

Despite raising concerns about the process, Yesufu said she would not challenge the outcome through a formal petition, opting instead to learn from the experience. She also pledged to remain in the NDC and indicated that she may contest for the Senate seat again in 2031.

The development comes as former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi emerged as the NDC's presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections after accepting the party's nomination in Abuja.

While reaffirming her commitment to the party, Yesufu maintained that the NDC remains the platform offering Nigerians the strongest presidential option ahead of the 2027 elections, in an apparent reference to Obi.

THE GUARDIAN1ST JUNE 2026Fresh Legal Battle Emerges Over Jonathan’s Right to Contest 2027 PresidencyThe legal battle over former President Goodluck Jonathan's eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election has moved to the Court of Appeal after Abuja-based lawyer Jideobi Johnmary challenged a Federal High Court ruling that cleared Jonathan to run.

Johnmary is asking the appellate court to overturn the May 26 judgment, arguing that the trial was flawed because Justice Peter Lifu heard and ruled on a motion seeking his recusal at the same time as the substantive suit. According to the appellant, the recusal application, which questioned the judge's impartiality, should have been decided before any proceedings on the main case. He is seeking to have the judgment set aside and the matter reassigned to another judge for a fresh hearing.

Meanwhile, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has dismissed reports linking Jonathan to a purported presidential ticket arrangement being promoted by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki. DAILY TRUST1ST JUNE 2026Uncertainty Trails Party Primaries as APC, ADC and NDC Delay Final Candidate Confirmation Ahead of 2027 ElectionsDespite concluding their primary elections, many aspirants who emerged victorious across major political parties are still awaiting formal confirmation of their candidacies, as party national leaderships insist that only their national organs can ratify and announce final candidate lists for the 2027 general elections.

The development has affected parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where controversies, appeals, and allegations of irregularities have emerged following the primaries.

None of the parties has fully issued certificates of return or formally presented flags to many declared winners, with final decisions expected to be made by their respective National Working Committees (NWCs) or National Executive Committees (NECs) before candidate lists are submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC said results from across the states are undergoing final review and appeal processes before ratification by the NWC. The party's constitution empowers the national leadership to confirm candidates after appeals have been resolved.

Similarly, the ADC announced that its NEC had approved most primary results, except those affected by pending appeals or unresolved contests. The party indicated that final governorship and senatorial candidate lists would be released shortly.

The NDC also urged the public to disregard unofficial results circulating online, stating that only its NEC can announce final outcomes. The party has scheduled meetings in Abuja to review the primaries before submitting its official list to INEC.

The uncertainty follows complaints and disputes in several states, including allegations of manipulation, irregularities, and delegate-list controversies. Notable grievances have already led some aspirants to defect from their parties, raising concerns about internal party cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during an interactive session with crime correspondents in Abuja, Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to accountability, transparency, professionalism, and respect for human rights. However, he stressed that public scrutiny must be balanced with the operational realities faced by police officers.

The IGP expressed concern over the growing trend of indiscriminate recording of officers during routine and sensitive activities, arguing that such practices can discourage personnel who work under difficult and often dangerous conditions.

He also condemned the circulation of old, manipulated, or misleading videos falsely presented as recent events, warning that such content fuels misinformation, creates unnecessary panic, and can undermine national security efforts.

Disu noted that policing has become increasingly demanding, with officers working extended hours under severe operational pressure. He revealed that the Federal Capital Territory Command lost about 140 officers last year through violent attacks, accidents, and other duty-related incidents.

While reiterating the Force's zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, the police chief assured Nigerians that erring officers would continue to face disciplinary action. He also called for stronger collaboration between the police and the media to promote accurate reporting, public trust, and effective communication on security matters.

The suit was filed by Nafiu-Bala Gombe, who argues that the emergence of Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and other members of the interim National Working Committee violated the party's constitution and provisions of the Electoral Act.

The case was initially handled by Justice Emeka Nwite before being reassigned to Justice Lifu following Nwite's elevation to the Court of Appeal. The matter had earlier been adjourned indefinitely pending a Supreme Court ruling on the ADC leadership dispute.

The Supreme Court subsequently set aside an earlier Court of Appeal order that led to the derecognition of the Mark-led leadership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), directing parties to return to the Federal High Court for an expedited hearing. In a statement from his media office, Nwoko claimed he won the primary by a wide margin, alleging he polled about 123,000 votes against 6,000 reportedly recorded by former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
