THE GUARDIAN30TH MARCH 2026Is Kwankwaso dumping NNPP for ADC? Fresh speculations suggest defection plans in motionNigeria’s opposition landscape is undergoing significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with renewed optimism despite the dominance of the ruling APC across 31 states.

A major development is the decision of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside his Kwankwasiyya Movement. This move follows strategic meetings with key opposition figures such as Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson, signaling a potential coalition that could reshape opposition strength.

Kwankwaso reportedly rejected overtures from the APC after disagreements over political positioning, including a vice-presidential ambition. His defection is expected to influence political dynamics, particularly in Kano.

Within the ADC, discussions are ongoing about adopting a consensus approach to select a presidential candidate, with names like Atiku Abubakar, Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi in circulation. Grassroots groups are increasingly backing Obi, arguing he is central to the party’s electoral chances.

Meanwhile, the PDP is attempting to stabilise internally through its national convention, with leaders like Nyesom Wike and Bukola Saraki expressing confidence in the party’s readiness for 2027 despite ongoing defections and internal disputes.

He warned that unresolved flaws could undermine Nigerians’ ability to freely choose their leaders.

THE GUARDIAN27TH MARCH 2026Court orders arrest of PDP factional Chairman, Kabiru Turaki over absence in criminal proceedingsA High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over his repeated failure to appear in court for arraignment in a criminal case filed by the Inspector-General of Police.

Justice Peter Kekemeke ruled that there was no justifiable reason for Turaki’s absence despite being duly notified, and ordered law enforcement to produce him in court. The case centres on allegations that Turaki provided false information to the police in a 2022 petition, an offence under the Penal Code.

Turaki has appealed the bench warrant and filed for a stay of execution, citing a medical emergency as the reason for his absence. His legal team also argued that a pending application to quash the charge should not require his physical presence.

Separately, the Turaki-led PDP faction has ruled out any possibility of supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections, as internal reconciliation efforts continue within the party. The faction insists the PDP must remain a credible opposition, amid ongoing leadership disputes threatening party unity.

PREMIUM TIMES27TH MARCH 2026Judicial Overreach: NBA raises alarm over judicial intimidation of Lawyers, demands restraint by JudgesThe Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has warned judges against abusing contempt powers to intimidate or punish lawyers, describing such actions as judicial overreach that undermines fair trial principles.

In a statement signed by its President, Afam Osigwe, the NBA said the misuse of contempt powers creates fear in courtrooms, erodes the dignity of the legal profession, and weakens the relationship between the Bench and the Bar.

The warning was triggered by recent incidents, including the detention of lawyer Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin by Justice Chinwendu Nwogu, and another case involving Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, where a legal officer was similarly detained. Reports of lawyers being subjected to degrading treatment, such as being ordered to kneel, also informed the NBA’s position.

The association stressed that contempt powers are “extraordinary” and should only be used where the administration of justice is under immediate threat - not to silence lawyers or penalise legitimate advocacy. It argued that disciplinary issues involving lawyers should instead be referred to appropriate bodies like the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.

The NBA demanded the immediate release of affected lawyers, called for investigations by relevant judicial authorities, and warned of a potential boycott of certain court proceedings if corrective action is not taken.

Speaking at the unveiling of a revised National Voter Education Manual in Abuja organized by Kimpact Development Initiative, and represented by Mohammed Haruna, he noted that many citizens believe their votes do not count, a perception fueled by misinformation and past electoral controversies.

PREMIUM TIMES25TH MARCH 2026Court strikes out cybercrime case against Sowore, orders release of passportThe Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a cybercrime case against activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, citing the Nigeria Police Force’s failure to diligently prosecute the matter.

Justice Musa Liman ruled that the prosecution had not actively pursued the case since Sowore’s arraignment in January 2025. Despite a last-minute attempt by the police to adjourn proceedings and later relist the case, the court dismissed both efforts, effectively ending the trial.

As a result, Sowore’s international passport previously seized as part of his bail conditions, was released through his legal team.

The charges stemmed from Sowore’s social media posts in which he described former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP” and criticised police leadership. He had faced 17 counts under the Cybercrime Act, which he consistently described as politically motivated and an attack on free speech.

Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been able to prove the nine-count money laundering charge beyond reasonable doubt. The judge held that the defendant was guilty as charged and accordingly convicted.

THIS DAY18TH MARCH 2026US Counter-terrorism Chief resigns over escalating Iran-Israel war The United States’ security architecture faced significant disruption yesterday after President Donald Trump’s Counter-terrorism Chief, Joe Kent, resigned, citing concerns that Iran posed no imminent threat and condemning the war as unjustified. Kent’s resignation highlights deep divisions within the administration and among Trump’s political base regarding the rationale for the US-Israeli campaign against Iran.

The conflict escalated further as Israel confirmed it had killed Ali Larijani, Iran’s de facto leader, and Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij militia. Larijani’s death removes a key moderating figure who could have negotiated with the United States, while Soleimani’s elimination undermines Iran’s security command. These strikes come after weeks of US-Israeli air operations and signal Israel’s continued effort to dismantle Iran’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump announced that the United States no longer needs NATO, following refusals by several member states to contribute to a multinational operation in the Strait of Hormuz. Allied countries including the UK, Japan, Australia, and South Korea have declined to send warships, reflecting skepticism about the necessity and logic of the conflict.

PREMIUM TIMES17TH MARCH 2026EFCC calls on National Assembly to pass Whistleblower Protection LawThe Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to enact comprehensive legislation to protect whistleblowers, citing widespread retaliation against individuals who expose corruption.

Speaking in Calabar during a sensitisation programme on Nigeria’s whistleblowing policy, Olukoyede stressed that a strong legal framework is needed to shield whistleblowers from victimisation and ensure timely access to financial rewards. He also urged lawmakers to domesticate provisions of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, particularly those on whistleblower protection.

Nigeria’s whistleblowing policy, introduced in 2016, offers rewards of 2.5–5% of recovered funds and has recorded notable successes. However, it lacks a comprehensive legal framework, leaving whistleblowers vulnerable to harassment, job loss, and threats to their lives.

Civil society groups, including the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, warn that whistleblowers in Nigeria and across the Economic Community of West African States face severe risks due to weak protections. Only a few countries in the region, such as Ghana and Senegal, have enacted relevant laws.

The case of whistleblower Yisa Usman highlights these risks, as he reportedly faced dismissal, legal challenges, and threats after exposing alleged corruption. Stakeholders at the event reiterated the urgent need for a legal framework to protect whistleblowers and strengthen Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.

ARISE NEWS16TH MARCH 2026APC reportedly offers Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed 60/40 power sharing deal ahead of planned defectionGovernor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State is reportedly set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following meetings with President Bola Tinubu and senior APC leaders.

Sources indicate that the move followed weeks of negotiations, during which the APC reportedly agreed to a 60/40 power-sharing arrangement with the governor and offered him a Senate ticket after his tenure. However, discussions are still ongoing over Mohammed’s demand to nominate his successor as governor. The presidency is said to prefer that control of the party structure in Bauchi remain with the broader party leadership due to competing interests from key figures in the state, including Ali Pate, Yusuf Tuggar, and Bala Wunti.

If the defection occurs, it would significantly strengthen the APC’s hold on state governorships nationwide while further weakening the opposition.

Meanwhile, internal tensions persist within the PDP as factions prepare for reconciliation talks between groups linked to Nyesom Wike and those aligned with Tanimu Turaki. The Wike camp has insisted on two non-negotiable conditions: the March 29 national convention must proceed as planned, and no new caretaker committee should be created since one already exists.

Party leaders such as Samuel Anyanwu confirmed that discussions are ongoing but no agreement has been reached. THE GUARDIAN16TH MARCH 2026PDP leadership crisis worsens as factional Congresses turn chaotic across StatesNigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing deepening internal divisions and political setbacks as defections, factional congresses, and leadership disputes threaten its stability.

Former Sule Lamido, a founding member and former governor of Jigawa State, has urged party members to rally behind the caretaker committee aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as a last effort to prevent the party’s collapse. Lamido described Wike as politically strategic for filling the leadership vacuum that emerged after the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee expired.

The crisis comes as the PDP loses influence in the Senate following defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). At the same time, factional congresses linked to the Wike-backed caretaker leadership have produced new state executives in several states, including Oyo State, Kano State, Borno State and Ekiti State.

However, the process has sparked controversy and unrest. Chaos erupted during the congress in Taraba State after two different candidates were declared winners of the chairmanship position, prompting security intervention. Disputes also emerged in Anambra State over alleged manipulation of the process, while the party leadership in Ondo State rejected claims that its executive had been dissolved, describing the move as unconstitutional.

Amid the turmoil, Lamido called for reconciliation among PDP stakeholders, warning that prolonged internal crises could undermine preparations for future elections due to strict electoral timelines.

Separately, an unusual political development occurred in Benue State, where a faction of the APC linked to George Akume reportedly entered a “strategic partnership” with the PDP at a meeting hosted by former governor Samuel Ortom. Party leaders described the alliance as a collaborative effort to address governance and security challenges in the state.

THIS DAY16TH MARCH 2026ADC debunks claims of incitement, faults APC over rising poverty and food imports under current administrationThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for defending the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, insisting that worsening poverty and hardship across the country reflect the failure of the administration’s policies.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC rejected accusations by the APC that the opposition was inciting Nigerians against the government. The party argued that widely cited statistics on poverty and economic hardship are based on independent reports and reflect the real experiences of citizens rather than political propaganda.

According to the ADC, Nigeria’s poverty rate has risen from about 50 percent before the removal of the petrol subsidy to 63 percent under the current administration. The party also cited surveys indicating that 93 percent of Nigerians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, while large majorities report worsening economic conditions and lack of access to basic necessities such as food, medical care, and clean water.

The opposition party further criticised the government’s handling of subsidy savings, questioning claims that funds saved from the subsidy removal were being redirected to key sectors like healthcare and social development. It argued that actual spending in these areas appeared minimal.

The ADC also warned that economic policies were hurting domestic agriculture and food production, pointing to the closure of many rice mills and a sharp increase in Nigeria’s food import bill. The party concluded that rising poverty and economic hardship demonstrate that the government’s reforms have imposed significant human costs on Nigerians.

DAILY TRUST16TH MARCH 2026APC crisis in Benue State triggers resignations, political realignmentsInternal divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State have triggered resignations and growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. Several APC members have reportedly left the party amid a long-running power struggle between supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia and allies of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The crisis intensified after parallel party congresses produced rival leadership structures—one led by Austin Agada from the Akume faction and another by Benjamin Omale backed by the governor’s camp. Reports indicate that members of the Akume faction fear the Alia-controlled structure may prevent them from securing party tickets during primaries, prompting moves toward defection.

The tension became visible when several APC governorship aspirants, including Mathias Buyan, Pius Akutah, Sebastine Hon and Michael Aondoakaa, attended an expanded executive meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hosted by former governor Samuel Ortom in Makurdi.

In addition, several APC members in the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo federal constituency reportedly resigned, including allies of House of Representatives member Philip Agbese. The defections were linked to dissatisfaction with the state party leadership and the recognition of the Alia-backed structure by the national secretariat.

Despite the reports, the Akume faction denied any mass defections, insisting the party remained intact. Meanwhile, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) said it was receiving consultations from politicians across party lines.

Separately, governorship aspirants from different parties met during the PDP gathering to form a political coalition against Governor Alia ahead of the 2027 elections.

Their defection letters were read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

However, Abaribe’s defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the ADC sparked constitutional debate. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin argued that the move might violate constitutional provisions because APGA had not experienced a crisis or division that could justify a lawmaker switching parties. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele cited Sections 65 and 68 of the 1999 Constitution, which require lawmakers to vacate their seats if they defect without such circumstances. Abaribe insisted he was expelled from APGA in September 2025, prompting his move. Akpabio subsequently asked him to provide documentary evidence of the expulsion or risk having his Abia South seat declared vacant.

Following the defections, the APC now holds 87 of the 109 Senate seats, while the ADC has nine and the PDP seven, with smaller parties holding single seats and three positions vacant. Meanwhile, the Lagos chapter of the APC criticised the PDP, claiming the opposition party is losing relevance nationwide due to internal disputes, weak ideological direction and lingering criticisms of its record during its years in federal power.

THIS DAY13TH MARCH 2026Ekiti 2026: Court of Appeal overturns High Court ruling, affirms Wole Oluyede as PDP Governorship Candidate The Court of Appeal of Nigeria sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld Dr. Wole Oluyede as the legitimate governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2026 Ekiti State election. In a unanimous judgment, a three-member panel led by Justice Peter Chudi Obiorah set aside the earlier ruling of the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, which had nullified the party’s primary election. The court affirmed that the primary conducted by the PDP’s National Working Committee under Kabiru Tanimu Turaki was valid, transparent, and in line with both the party constitution and the Electoral Act.

The appellate panel dismissed the claim brought by aspirant Ayeni, noting that he had failed to exhaust internal party dispute mechanisms and that the timeline for conducting another primary had already lapsed according to INEC regulations. The ruling effectively ends the leadership and candidacy dispute that had followed the November 2025 primary and allows the PDP to proceed into the election with Oluyede as its candidate.

PDP officials welcomed the judgment, with National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong urging party supporters to intensify campaign efforts, while Southwest PDP Publicity Secretary Sanya Atofarati praised the judiciary for upholding democracy and the rule of law. The party sees the ruling as a vindication of internal conflict resolution mechanisms and an opportunity to mobilise voters ahead of the June 2026 governorship election across Ekiti State’s 177 wards.

PREMIUM TIMES13TH MARCH 2026Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah debunks high taxation claims, defends revenue reformsGovernor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has dismissed claims of high taxation in the state as a “pathetic misconception” propagated by opposition groups and former beneficiaries of the old administration. In an interview aired on Afia Television, Mbah explained that the state government does not have the constitutional authority to impose or increase federal taxes such as Personal Income Tax, Company Income Tax, Value Added Tax, or Withholding Tax, which fall under the exclusive legislative powers of the National Assembly of Nigeria.

He highlighted that his administration had significantly increased the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by widening the tax net, blocking leakages, optimising dormant assets, and implementing measures like Consolidated Demand Notices, e-ticketing, and asset monetisation. IGR grew from N26.8bn in 2022 to N406.7bn in 2025, with tax revenue accounting for only 12.6 per cent of the total, while non-tax revenue contributed 87.4 per cent.

For state-controlled areas such as rates and levies, Mbah said a committee—including market leaders, organised labour, and the Chamber of Commerce—reviewed charges and found Enugu’s fees to be the lowest in the South East. The administration subsequently cut certain rates, particularly in the land sector, by 70 per cent. He also acknowledged illegal revenue collectors and said the recently passed Enugu State Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, 2026 will curb unauthorised collections. Citizens are encouraged to report extortion through toll-free lines, and a standing task force has been set up to enforce compliance.

He urged cabinet members to unite and stay committed to the government's principles for the development and welfare of Kano State.

He confirmed that five commissioners had resigned amid the political realignment (with their resignations accepted), while congratulating recent APC by-election winners in Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies, as well as Umar Haruna Doguwa on his election as APC chairman in Kano State.

THE GUARDIAN13TH MARCH 2026Court bars Governor Aiyedatiwa from 2028 re-election bid over eight-year tenure limitA Federal High Court in Akure on Thursday, 12th March 2026, ruled on the ineligibility of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to contest the 2028 governorship election. Justice Toyin Adegoke held that his two oaths of office (first in December 2023 to complete the late Akeredolu’s term, then in February 2025 after winning the 2024 election) exceed the constitutional eight-year limit, citing the Supreme Court precedent in Marwa v. Nyako.

The suit, filed by APC member Dr. Akin Egbuwalo, succeeded fully; some defendants’ processes were deemed abandoned. The ruling follows the Court of Appeal’s earlier dismissal of Aiyedatiwa’s appeal on the suit’s amendment. Aiyedatiwa called the judgment a “distraction” and said he has no plans to seek re-election.

The amendment responds to growing concerns about politicians allegedly maintaining links with multiple parties.

The new provision introduces three additional subsections to Section 77 of the Act, which regulates political party membership. It clearly states that a person cannot be registered as a member of more than one political party simultaneously. If an individual is found to have dual membership, such memberships will be declared void and the person will no longer be recognised as a valid member of any party until the situation is regularised in line with the law and the party’s constitution.

The amendment also criminalises the act of knowingly maintaining membership in multiple political parties. Offenders may face a fine of ₦10 million, a prison term of up to two years, or both upon conviction.

Oyedele is expected to serve as Minister of State for Finance, replacing Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been reassigned as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning. His confirmation followed a screening session in which senators questioned him for over two hours.

During the screening, Oyedele described the nomination as a call to serve Nigeria at a time of significant fiscal challenges and opportunities. The public policy expert, accountant, and economist highlighted his more than two decades of experience working with governments, multilateral institutions, and global corporations on fiscal governance and economic reforms.

Before his nomination, Oyedele chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax laws. The reforms, which took over two years to develop, came into effect on January 1 and are aimed at improving tax administration, boosting government revenue, and strengthening the investment climate.

THE GUARDIAN12TH MARCH 2026Ondo State APC holds fresh Congress, elects new executivesThe All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has elected a new set of state executives after successfully conducting a fresh congress in Akure, bringing an end to a prolonged internal dispute that had disrupted the initial process.

The congress, held at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome), produced Babatunde Kolawole as the new State Chairman alongside 35 other executives. Kolawole currently serves as Senior Special Assistant on Legislative Matters and Party Affairs to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The earlier congress had been stalled after the Federal High Court in Akure, presided over by Justice Toyin Adegoke, issued an ex parte order restraining both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC from proceeding with the exercise. The order followed a suit filed by aggrieved party members led by Lawrence Adebayo, who challenged the conduct of the ward and local government congresses.

Despite the court order, the first congress was held on March 3, 2026, but was mired in controversy, particularly due to the absence of INEC, which cited the subsisting injunction. After the dispute was reportedly resolved by the party’s national leadership and the court order vacated, a fresh congress was organised to regularise the process.

Representing Governor Aiyedatiwa at the event, Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami described the exercise as a demonstration of the party’s resilience and unity. Party officials also commended members for resolving internal disagreements and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to progress, fairness, and cohesion.

The BoT led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara met in Abuja and resolved to initiate reconciliation measures among the party’s warring groups. The decision followed a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal which nullified the PDP’s November 15–16, 2025 national convention held in Ibadan that produced a National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. While the Wabara-led BoT disagreed with the judgment, it said it would await legal advice from party lawyers while exploring the court’s recommendation for internal reconciliation.

At the same time, another BoT faction aligned with Nyesom Wike and chaired by Mao Ohuabunwa also met and expressed readiness to end ongoing legal battles in favour of dialogue. The faction’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, urged party members to embrace reconciliation following recent court rulings.

The initiative was unveiled in Abuja by the movement’s National Coordinator, Lauretta Onuchie, who said it is designed to bring together party members across the country and resolve internal disagreements within the party.

Onuchie explained that the movement seeks to reinforce solidarity among members and emphasised that unity is critical for any political party hoping to achieve meaningful results. She noted that Nigerians are increasingly concerned about divisions within political parties and questioned whether parties can overcome internal conflicts to serve the public effectively. According to her, the One ADC Movement aims to demonstrate that political organisations can rise above such divisions.

She also described political parties as communities that require cooperation despite inevitable disagreements, stressing that collective goals should take precedence over personal ambitions.

Also speaking at the event, the party’s Director of Mobilisation, Umar Shuiabu, said the movement would soon expand its activities nationwide with the objective of building grassroots support and positioning the ADC to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

In a letter dated March 10, 2026, addressed to the NNPP chairman in Yalwa Ward of Dala Local Government Area in Kano State, the lawmaker said his decision followed consultations with political associates and supporters across the 12 wards of Dala Federal Constituency.

Madakin Gini explained that his defection was influenced by the deepening internal crisis within the NNPP, which he said had split the party into rival factions loyal to Boniface Aniebonam and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. According to him, the existence of parallel leadership structures from the ward to the national level made it difficult for the party to function effectively.

Although he acknowledged his previous commitment to the party and the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Madakin Gini said the current divisions within the NNPP prompted his decision to withdraw his membership. The lawmaker had earlier distanced himself from the movement, including abandoning the red cap commonly associated with its supporters.

PREMIUM TIMES12TH MARCH 2026Battle against Insurgency: Military Troops reportedly recapture Ngoshe Military Base from terroristsNigerian troops have reportedly killed several insurgents and regained control of a military formation in Ngoshe village in Borno State following a recent terrorist attack that left many residents dead and dozens abducted, including women and children. The operation was reportedly carried out on Wednesday by the Nigerian Army in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters, although the military had not officially confirmed the recapture at the time of reporting.

According to security sources, about 200 soldiers stationed in nearby Pulka were initially deployed to Ngoshe, with 60 troops left behind when others withdrew. Those troops reportedly retreated after sighting a large group of insurgents approaching the village, but reinforcements were later sent, leading to a fierce battle that eventually forced the terrorists out and allowed the military to regain control of the facility and surrounding areas.

The attack on Ngoshe was said to have been carried out jointly by Boko Haram and its rival faction, Islamic State West Africa Province, which operate around the Mandara Mountains in the Gwoza area. The development comes amid a surge in attacks on military formations in the region.

In recent days, insurgents reportedly targeted several military bases, including those in Goniri and Kukawa, killing soldiers and a commanding officer, Umar Farouq. Earlier attacks also struck military camps in Mainok, Jakana, Marte and Konduga. Security analysts have linked the renewed assaults to the “Camp Holocaust” campaign launched by ISWAP to target military installations.

Despite the reported recapture of Ngoshe, dozens of abducted villagers remain in captivity. A video released by the insurgents last week showed some of the victims, including children, dressed in military uniforms.

He explained that some of the dialogue initiatives involved visits to traditional rulers and trips to forests believed to be bandit hideouts, arguing that negotiation could help persuade fighters to lay down their arms.

The comments came amid renewed controversy over his relationship with armed groups in northern Nigeria.

Separately, diplomatic tensions between Israel and Iran intensified. Israel’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, accused Iran of being a longstanding sponsor of global terrorism, citing support for groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis, as well as past incidents in Nigeria including the 2010 interception of Iranian weapons in Lagos and a 2013 security operation linked to Hezbollah.

THIS DAY11TH MARCH 2026'Be careful not to be eliminated’: Iran responds to President Trumps's threats against its new Supreme LeaderTensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply after former U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran over its actions in the Strait of Hormuz and criticized the country’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Trump threatened that Iran would face “death, fire and fury” if it continued obstructing the Strait and suggested the new leader “could not live in peace.”

Iran responded forcefully. Security chief Ali Larijani dismissed Trump’s threats, warning, “Take care of yourself not to be eliminated,” and emphasizing that Iran is not afraid of U.S. threats. The warning follows the conviction of an Iranian-trained operative, Asif Merchant, for an assassination attempt against Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.

The U.S.-Iran conflict has already caused significant casualties: seven U.S. troops killed and 140 injured, according to the Pentagon. The latest fatality was Army Sgt. Benjamin Pennington, injured in an Iranian strike on a Saudi base on March 1. Pentagon officials report that Iranian missile and drone attacks have declined, while U.S. forces have targeted Iran’s missile stockpiles, navy, and defense infrastructure.

On the ground in Iran, residents are experiencing blackouts and heavy destruction, with at least 1,230 civilians killed since the conflict began. The UAE shut its Ruwais oil refinery after a drone strike disrupted operations, highlighting risks to global energy flows from the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil transit.

Trump also claimed U.S. forces had destroyed ten inactive Iranian mine-laying vessels, signaling readiness to act against threats to shipping, though no mines were reported deployed yet. U.S. officials stress that while the campaign is intense, it is not intended to become an endless war or nation-building mission, with operational decisions resting on presidential guidance.

THIS DAY10TH MARCH 2026Turaki-led PDP heads to Supreme Court after Court of Appeal nullifies conventionThe Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared the November 15–16, 2025 national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) unlawful, ruling that the event was held in defiance of a subsisting Federal High Court order. The convention produced the Taminu Turaki-led national executive, which the court has now effectively invalidated.

The appellate court held that the PDP ignored a Federal High Court directive issued by Justice Peter Lifu on November 14, 2025, which restrained the party from holding the convention until former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido was allowed to purchase the chairmanship nomination form.

According to the judgement delivered by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, the PDP’s decision to proceed with the convention while the order was in force constituted contempt of court and a violation of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the party’s own guidelines. The court also criticised the party for seeking relief from a court of coordinate jurisdiction instead of appealing the original order.

The appeal filed by a faction of the party aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde was dismissed, and the court imposed a ₦2 million cost against the PDP.

Despite the ruling, the PDP leadership has vowed to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court, arguing that the matter involves internal party affairs. Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike urged PDP factions to end internal conflicts and rebuild the party, warning that prolonged litigation could weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Amid the crisis, the party’s caretaker leadership is already planning a fresh national convention scheduled for March 29–30, 2026 in Abuja. However, Datonye Alasia, Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, and Otonye T.K.D. Amachree were rejected after screening due to poor performance, petitions from constituents, and failure to file tax returns.

PREMIUM TIMES10TH MARCH 2026Appeal Court dismisses Governor Aiyedatiwa’s appeal challenging the amendment of a lawsuit questioning his eligibility to seek re-election in 2028The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has dismissed an appeal filed by Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of Ondo State, challenging the amendment of a lawsuit questioning his eligibility to seek re-election in 2028.

In a unanimous ruling, the three-member panel led by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam held that the governor’s appeal lacked merit and ordered him to pay ₦2 million in costs. The court ruled that the Federal High Court in Akure acted within its discretion when it allowed amendments to the suit and did not violate the governor’s right to fair hearing.

The case was filed by Akindele Egbuwalo, an APC chieftain, who is asking the court to determine whether Aiyedatiwa can legally contest another term in 2028 under provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

The legal dispute stems from the fact that Aiyedatiwa was first sworn in on 27 December 2024 to complete the tenure of the late governor Rotimi Akeredolu, and was sworn in again on 24 February 2025 after winning the subsequent governorship election.

Sections 137(3) and 182(3) of the Constitution state that a person who completes the term of another elected official can only be elected for one additional term, raising questions about whether Aiyedatiwa would be eligible to contest again in 2028.

Although the governor and other defendants, including the Independent National Electoral Commission and the All Progressives Congress, argued that the suit was premature, the appellate court upheld the earlier ruling allowing the case to proceed.

ARISE NEWS10TH MARCH 2026Iran names Mojtaba Khamenei as new Supreme Leader after father’s deathIran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new Supreme Leader, following his father’s death in a U.S.–Israeli strike during the ongoing regional conflict. The decision was made by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s top leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a hardline cleric with close ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), now holds ultimate authority over Iran’s political system, armed forces, and strategic programmes. His appointment makes him the third supreme leader in the history of the Islamic Republic.

The succession is controversial because it represents the first effective father-to-son transition of power since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, raising concerns about a potential dynastic system in a republic originally founded to oppose monarchy.

The leadership change comes at a time of intensifying conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, with missile and drone attacks continuing across the region. The escalation has also unsettled global markets, with oil prices rising sharply due to fears that the conflict could disrupt shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.

U.S. officials have criticised the appointment, warning that the emergence of another hardline leader in Tehran could further escalate the conflict and prolong regional instability.

CHANNELS TV6TH MARCH 2026Federal High Court acquits Abba Kyari in NDLEA case over lack of credible evidenceJustice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari of a 23-count charge relating to the alleged non-declaration of assets filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Kyari was tried alongside his two brothers, who were accused of swearing to false affidavits in an alleged attempt to conceal the origin of certain properties. In his ruling, Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to prove the allegations against the defendants, particularly regarding the ownership of several landed properties cited in the charges.

The court noted that under Nigerian law, ownership of landed property can be established through traditional history, title documents, acts of possession, or possession through connection. However, the judge found that the NDLEA failed to present any of these forms of evidence linking Kyari to properties located at Fountain Estate, Karsana, which were said to belong to Ramatu Kyari.

The court also ruled that the prosecution did not provide material evidence connecting Kyari to properties on Linda Choko Road in Asokoro, Abuja, or to properties in Maiduguri, Borno State. Kyari had maintained during his defence that the Borno properties belonged to his late father and were inherited by him and his siblings, a claim the prosecution failed to disprove.

Justice Omotosho further criticised the NDLEA for charging Kyari’s brothers with conspiracy without substantiating the allegation, describing the overall case as weak and lacking credible evidence. The judge added that Kyari had served the country and should not be subjected to persecution.

The impeachment notice was presented during plenary by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said the process is being carried out in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Lawmakers allege that Gwarzo was involved in the diversion of funds meant for the state’s 44 local government councils during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024. According to the allegations, he received monthly kickbacks from each of the councils during that period, amounting to hundreds of millions of naira. The petition, dated March 4, 2026, was submitted by a legal team led by Ubong Akpan and delivered to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. It follows El-Rufai’s continued detention by the ICPC after he had earlier been granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 18, 2026.

In the document, the former governor accused the anti-graft agency of defamation, abuse of office, malicious prosecution, contempt of court, and the alleged use of forged or false documents against him. The petition also criticized a public statement issued by the ICPC about the case, describing it as reckless, defamatory, and legally untenable.

El-Rufai’s lawyers warned that the notice serves as a final step before initiating legal action against the commission. The damages sought include ₦5 billion in compensatory damages, ₦5 billion in punitive damages, ₦5 billion in aggravated damages, ₦500 million for injurious falsehood, and ₦100 million for legal costs, bringing the total claim to ₦15.6 billion.

This development marks the latest legal confrontation between El-Rufai and the ICPC, following an earlier ₦1 billion fundamental rights suit he filed after operatives of the commission raided his residence.

THE GUARDIAN6TH MARCH 2026Cross River Assembly suspends Lawmaker over allegations of domestic violence
The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, Agbor Ovat Dickson, indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance raised during plenary by the Deputy Leader of the Assembly, Davies Etta, who drew attention to reports circulating on social media that Dickson allegedly assaulted his wife. Etta told lawmakers that the incident had generated public concern and risked damaging the reputation of the legislature, stressing that members who carry the title “honourable” must maintain high standards of conduct both in public and private life.

After deliberations, the Assembly resolved to suspend Dickson pending the outcome of an investigation and constituted a seven-member special committee to probe the allegation. The Leader of the House, Francis Bassey Asuquo, emphasized the importance of enforcing the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights.

In his remarks, the Chief Whip, Hillary Bisong, said the alleged behaviour fell below the ethical standards expected of legislators. The Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, also expressed concern about the reputational impact of the allegation and directed the committee to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation before submitting its report.

DAILY TRUST6TH MARCH 2026Former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson defects from PDP to NDCFormer Bayelsa State Governor and Senator, Seriake Dickson, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson announced his defection during a press conference in Abuja where the NDC was formally unveiled. The former governor, who previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, two-term governor of Bayelsa State, and later a senator on the PDP platform, said his decision was driven by the need to help build a credible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said he still feels emotionally connected to the PDP because of its historic role in Nigeria’s democratic development but expressed concern over what he described as the party’s prolonged internal crisis and declining political strength. According to him, poor leadership and persistent internal conflicts have weakened the party’s ability to function as an effective opposition, warning that Nigeria must avoid drifting toward a one-party system.

Dickson noted that although he had opportunities to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) while he was governor, he declined because he believes Nigeria’s diversity requires a competitive multi-party system.

At the unveiling event, the party’s Protem Chairman, Cleopas Moses Zuwogeh, presented Dickson with membership card number 001 and handed over the party’s flag, symbol, and authority to him. Dickson called on Nigerians seeking a stronger democratic system to join the NDC, which he said aims to provide a credible political alternative.

THIS DAY5TH MARCH 2026President Tinubu orders immediate suspension of Cashless Policy in AirportsPresident Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of the newly introduced cashless payment system at Nigerian airports after it caused severe traffic congestion and hardship for travellers.

The decision was announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja.

The cashless system, introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), was designed to eliminate corruption and improve government revenue collection by replacing cash payments at airport toll gates and parking areas with electronic payments.

However, within a week of implementation, the system reportedly caused long queues and gridlock at airport entry points, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, leading to many passengers missing their flights.

In response, President Tinubu directed that the system be temporarily suspended while authorities work on a more efficient solution.

For now, the government will introduce a temporary hybrid payment system, allowing both cash payments and the use of prepaid FAAN cards already purchased by motorists.

Keyamo said the government will also engage private sector partners to develop a more efficient electronic payment platform that can eliminate cash transactions without causing delays.

The minister stressed that the suspension is temporary, and the government remains committed to implementing a fully electronic revenue collection system once a more efficient model is developed.

DAILY TRUST5TH MARCH 2026State Police gains momentum as IGP sets up Steering CommitteeNigeria’s push to establish state police gained momentum as the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, inaugurated a steering committee to develop a framework for implementing the policy.

The committee, chaired by Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute for Police Studies, has four weeks to propose an operational model for state policing. Its mandate includes reviewing policing models, assessing community security needs, designing recruitment and training standards, and developing accountability mechanisms.

The move follows a recent declaration by President Bola Tinubu, who said the federal government would not postpone the creation of state police as part of efforts to address rising insecurity nationwide.

The IGP said state police could help bring policing closer to communities, improve intelligence gathering, and allow faster responses to local security threats while enabling the federal police to focus on complex crimes such as terrorism, organised crime and cybercrime.

However, the House of Representatives cautioned that state police cannot be implemented immediately. Lawmakers explained that the policy requires constitutional amendments, which must be passed by the National Assembly and ratified by state legislatures before it becomes legally enforceable.

Meanwhile, some security experts have expressed reservations. Dr. Yahuza Getso argued that Nigeria should first reform and strengthen the existing Nigeria Police Force, citing corruption, weak recruitment standards and declining public trust as fundamental issues that must be addressed before decentralising policing.

The debate over state police has persisted for years, with supporters saying it would improve local security, while critics warn it could be abused by state governors for political purposes if strong safeguards are not established.

DAILY TRUST5TH MARCH 2026INEC begins review of Party Primaries Guidelines ahead of 2027The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun reviewing its Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of party primaries in preparation for the 2027 general elections, following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.

The review is taking place during a three-day technical workshop in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, where the commission is working to align its rules with the new electoral law and tighten oversight of political party activities.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said the exercise aims to strengthen internal party democracy, transparency, and compliance in party primaries, which are often plagued by disputes and litigation. He warned that opaque candidate selection processes can reduce voter confidence and increase court cases before elections.

Under the newly released timetable, presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027. Party primaries are scheduled between April 23 and May 30, 2026.

The revised guidelines are expected to introduce stricter requirements for party membership records, financial transparency, and the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

INEC said the review will produce a clearer regulatory framework to guide political parties and protect the integrity of the 2027 elections.

MURIC and other Islamic organisations are calling for Amupitan’s removal over his authorship of an 80-page legal brief in a 2020 report alleging genocide against Christians in Nigeria. The brief was part of a publication titled Nigeria’s Silent Slaughter: Genocide in Nigeria and the Implications for the International Community released by the International Committee on Nigeria (ICON) and the International Organisation on Peace-building & Social Justice (PSJ).

In a statement, MURIC’s Executive Director Ishaq Akintola alleged that Amupitan’s participation in the report raises concerns about bias and neutrality, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akintola claimed that Islamic organisations had earlier raised the issue with the presidency but received no response, prompting the group to escalate the matter to lawmakers. He argued that Amupitan’s continued leadership of INEC could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

MURIC insisted its demand is not based on religion but on what it described as evidence of prejudice, and urged members of the National Assembly to review the matter and take appropriate action.

CHANNELS TV3RD MARCH 2026Senate rescinds motion seeking removal of CAC Registrar GeneralThe Senate Committee on Finance has reversed its earlier recommendation that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remove the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Magaji.

The committee had previously called for Magaji’s removal over his alleged repeated failure to honour invitations to appear before it. However, during a subsequent session, lawmakers rescinded the resolution after Magaji appeared before the panel and tendered an unreserved apology, expressing what members described as genuine remorse.

The motion for rescission was moved by Jibrin Isa and seconded by Nasir Daura, and was unanimously adopted via voice vote.

Committee Chairman Sani Musa had earlier criticised the CAC boss for persistently failing to attend hearings or delegating junior officers, stressing that the Constitution empowers the Senate with oversight of revenue-generating agencies.

In his defence, Magaji apologised and attributed his absence to travel delays, while announcing the establishment of a dedicated liaison office to improve communication between the Commission and the National Assembly. Lawmakers, apparently satisfied with the explanation, agreed to withdraw the earlier recommendation.

THE GUARDIAN3RD MARCH 2026Enugu women lament exclusion from Senate representation since 1999, push for 35% affirmative actionWomen in Enugu State, under the group Loudest Voices for Mbah, have expressed concern over the absence of female representation in the state’s Senate seats since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Speaking in Enugu, the group’s leader, Onyinye Joy Mammah, urged Governor Peter Mbah to promote women’s political inclusion in line with the 35 per cent affirmative action policy.

The group called on the governor to use the upcoming Enugu North senatorial by-election and the 2027 general elections to correct what they described as the systematic exclusion of women from decision-making positions. They argued that women cannot meaningfully contribute to governance and development if denied representation in elective offices.

Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Abba-Isa, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering women with disabilities economically. Speaking at a disability-inclusive policy dialogue, he highlighted ongoing social investment programmes targeting vulnerable groups and stressed enforcement of disability rights laws and international commitments to gender and disability inclusion.

PREMIUM TIMES3RD MARCH 2026PDP dismisses reports of nationwide Congresses, urges members to disregard claimsThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports of planned congresses across the country, urging members and the public to disregard the information.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, clarified that the PDP is not conducting any congresses at this time. He explained that the party is currently focused on its digital membership registration exercise, which he said is ongoing and progressing well.

Ememobong alleged that the misinformation was being spread by expelled members acting in the interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the intention of destabilising the PDP. He described the alleged congresses and a circulated “PDP Timetable of Activities 2026” as fake and unauthorised.

The party stressed that only communications issued through its official national organs and verified platforms should be regarded as authentic. It also warned that those responsible for circulating false information would be identified and held accountable.

THIS DAY3RD MARCH 2026APC Chairman dismisses claims of one-party State, attributes growth to electronic membership registrationNentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed claims that Nigeria is moving toward a one-party state. Speaking in Abuja, he said the influx of politicians from opposition parties into the APC reflects political competition and the party’s organisational strength.

Yilwatda, through his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, described the migration of politicians as a natural choice, noting that many smaller parties are struggling to survive. He likened it to a market, where people choose the most effective platform.

He attributed APC’s expanding membership and electoral competitiveness to its strong internal structures, technology-driven membership registration, and transparent administration. The electronic registration system, he said, provides accurate, verifiable data on members, including locations and contact details, improving mobilisation and planning. It also ensures credible primaries by allowing only duly registered members to participate.

Yilwatda further explained that the party’s membership database is now linked with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), helping to clean and validate data, eliminate duplication, and enhance internal accountability.

DAILY TRUST2ND MARCH 2026#NigeriaDecides2027: INEC Chairman promises best-ever elections in 2027, despite real-time transmission limitationsThe Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has said the commission cannot promise a 100 percent perfect election in 2027, particularly regarding real-time electronic transmission of results.

Speaking at a Citizens’ Townhall Meeting in Abuja, Amupitan explained that while INEC has the capacity to electronically transmit results, real-time delivery may sometimes experience delays due to logistical or technical factors, similar to delays in banking alerts. He emphasized that there was no transmission failure during the recent FCT Area Council elections, apart from a delayed ward result in Kuje.

He identified logistics, peaceful conduct, timely commencement of voting, and effective result management as key indicators of a successful election. While acknowledging past human and logistical shortcomings, Amupitan assured Nigerians that INEC is working to improve systems ahead of 2027.

He also stressed the need for simpler legislative language in the Electoral Act 2026 to make it more accessible to citizens. Reflecting on the 2023 general election, he noted that technology testing was insufficient at the federal level and pledged that interstate transmission systems would be properly tested before 2027.

Amupitan expressed confidence that the 2027 election would be the best in Nigeria’s history due to improved preparedness and increased voter awareness.

VANGUARD2ND MARCH 2026ADC begins online membership registration exercise nationwideThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a free online membership registration platform nationwide ahead of the 2027 general election. The digital portal complements the party’s ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise, initially launched in February in Abuja.

According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the platform is designed to comply with the Electoral Act 2026, which requires political parties to maintain comprehensive digital membership registers. Only members whose details are fully captured and verified on the party’s official digital register will be eligible to vote or contest in the party primaries.

While the online option is now available, manual registration will continue across states for those preferring physical enrolment. The ADC noted growing interest from Nigerians at home and in the diaspora and said the digital platform removes barriers to entry, simplifies enrolment, and ensures secure participation.

Members who registered on the previous platform are required to revalidate their information on the new portal in line with the Electoral Act and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines. Support groups and associations have also been encouraged to register through the platform.

The party clarified that the exercise does not affect its objections to certain provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 or the INEC timetable.

VANGUARD2ND MARCH 2026Iran retaliates as top leadership is eliminated in US–Israel targeted strikeThe United States and Israel have reportedly eliminated several top Iranian military and political figures in an escalating conflict that has entered its third day. Among those reported killed are Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; senior adviser Ali Shamkhani; IRGC Commander Mohammed Pakpour; Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh; and other key intelligence and nuclear officials. Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also reported killed in a targeted strike while under house arrest.

In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli cities and U.S. assets in the Gulf. At least nine Israelis and three U.S. service members were reported killed, with dozens injured across the region. Iran claimed it struck the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, but U.S. Central Command denied the claim.

Iran has appointed senior cleric Ayatollah Alireza Arafi to a temporary three-member Leadership Council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Mohseni-Ejei pending the selection of a new Supreme Leader. Tehran declared 40 days of mourning and vowed strong retaliation.

The conflict has triggered major regional disruption. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reportedly blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit chokepoint, raising global energy concerns. Oil prices climbed above $73 per barrel amid fears of supply disruption. Over 19,000 flights have been delayed or cancelled globally as Gulf airports suspended operations.

World leaders including Vladimir Putin, China’s Wang Yi, North Korea, and the EU condemned the escalation, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned of unprecedented force but indicated openness to talks with Iran’s new leadership. Pope Leo also appealed for de-escalation to prevent further violence.
