In the thick of security challenges in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has stated the commitment of his government to implement a community policing programme, According to Buhari, the programme will be implemented using 500,000 volunteers from across 774 Local Government Areas of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to address the shortage of manpower in the Police. The volunteers for the programme will be beneficiaries of the N-Power Scheme, a Federal Government youth empowerment initiative that was established in 2016. According to President Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Job creation and Youth employment, Afolabi Imoukhede, the details of the volunteers have been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and to State Governors. Giving reason for the choice of the volunteers over 10,000 personnel the Nigeria Police intended to recruit, Imoukhede explained that State Governors were of the opinion that the number was inadequate to serve the security needs of all the States in Nigeria. He praised the community policing programme, stating that it provides each State with no less than 10,000 volunteers, who are based in their communities of origin. He also added that while a date is yet to be fixed for the programme to kick off, State Governors, the Police and other security agencies are working out modalities for its full implementation. Observers however worry that unleashing 500,000 untrained N-Power volunteers into policing role could be a source of insecurity in itself.
