INEC trains Visually Impaired Voters ahead of Kogi/Bayelsa Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday, 4th November 2019, organised a training session for over 100 visually impaired persons in Bayelsa State on the use of the ‘Braille Ballot Guide’. The assistive material is to aid voting by visually impaired persons during the November 16 governorship election in the State. While declaring the training open, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Bayelsa State, Monday Tom underscored the need to promote a constitutional right of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to vote in elections, by making the electoral process inclusive. He also enjoined the trainees to go out on election day to cast their votes. The Deputy Director, Civil Society Organisations division, INEC headquarters, Mrs. Lakunya Dorothy stated that the sensitisation will serve as a learning platform for visually impaired persons who are not conversant with the use of braille. INEC organised a similar training in Lokoja, Kogi State in October, 2019.
