BRIEF ON OSUN STATE
Osun State is an inland state in South-West Nigeria with a population of 3,423,535 (2006 population census figure). Its capital is Osogbo. It is bounded in the north by Kwara State, in the east partly by Ekiti State and partly by Ondo State, in the south by Ogun State, and in the west by Oyo State. Osun State is home to several famous landmarks, including the Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria’s pre-eminent institution of higher learning located in the ancient town of Ile-Ifẹ – an important cradle of political and religious culture of the Yoruba culture. Other important towns include the ancient kingdom-capitals of Ilesa, Ila-Orangun, Iwo, Ede, Ejigbo, Ijebu-Jesa, Ifetedo, Ibokun, Esa-Oke and Oke-Ila Orangun.
The present Osun State was created in 1991 from the old Oyo State. It derives its name from River Osun, the venerated natural spring that is the manifestation of the Yoruba goddess with the same name.

People and Culture
Indigenes of Osun State belong to the Yoruba race and comprise the Oyo, Ife, Ijesa, Igbomina and Osun. Many non-indigenes and foreigners also reside in the state and live together in harmony. Yoruba and English are the languages used for official and business transactions. The people have a rich cultural heritage that is demonstrated in all spheres of their life. Their culture finds expression in their arts, literature, music and other social activities.

Tourism
Tourist Centres in the State include, the Oranmiyan staff, Museum and Obafemi Awolowo University Zoological Gardens – all at Ile-Ife. Others include the Osun Osogbo Shrine, Mbari-Mbayo Cultural Centre, Idi-Baba Cultural Centre, Adunni-Olorisa (Suzan Wenger) Centre and Nike Arts Galaxy – all in Osogbo; the Olumirin Waterfalls at Erin Ijesa; Igbo Sango in Ede; Kiriji War (1886 – 1889) site in Imesi-Ile; and Ayinkunnugba Waterfalls at Oke Ila-Orangun.
