National Assembly re-introduces Bill to establish Electoral Offences Commission

The National Assembly has re-introduced an Electoral Offences Commission Establishment Bill 2019. The bill passed its first reading at the Senate on Wednesday, 27th November 2019. It will be recalled that one of the recommendations of the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform committee was the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission to deal with the prosecution and punishment of electoral offences. This is an electoral reform that has become imperative over time, in the light of the rising incidences of election related violence. Still on the issue of electoral reforms, the Nigerian Senate has re-introduced the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2019. It will be recalled that the bill had been passed by the 8th Assembly but had not received Presidential assent, with the Presidency stating that the passage of the Bill was coming on the heels of the 2019 general elections. The bill has scaled second reading in the Senate.
