National Security Council Meeting Holds Ahead of Governorship Elections

On Tuesday, 5th March 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari presided over a National Security Council meeting at the State House in Abuja. All Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) were in attendance, alongside other officials. After the closed-door meeting, the IGP, Mohammed Adamu spoke on the preparations of the Police for the conduct of the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on Saturday, 9th March, 2019. He stated that security measures for the elections have been enhanced to create a conducive environment for Nigerians to come out and cast their votes; and to ensure the electoral process is hitch-free. He reiterated that ballot box snatchers and perpetrators of other electoral offences would be severely dealt with. He also revealed that the Police has taken note of States that are prone to violence and has increased the number of security personnel, in order to take proactive steps to dissipate any problems ahead of the elections. He further called on all election stakeholders to be law abiding and emphasized that INEC officials and security personnel are expected to perform their duties without compromise.
