Nigeria’s Public service rules provide for the retirement of a public officer upon completion of 35 years of service or attainment of the age of 60 years. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris Kpotun, who joined the Nigeria Police in 1984 and was appointed by President Buhari as Inspector General of Police on the 21st of March, 2016, is due for retirement, having completed 35 years of service on the 3rd of January, 2019. There have been speculations that the President may extend his tenure, followed by calls from various quarters across the country for his retirement, on the basis that he has attained the mandatory age of retirement. The opposition to IGP Idris’ continued stay in office is exacerbated by widespread concerns over Police partisanship and dabbling into election issues.
