Preparations for the May 29 inauguration ceremony and the June 12 Democracy day celebration are in full swing. Wednesday, 29th May 2019 will see President Buhari and re-elected Governors being sworn in for a second term, while newly elected Governors will be ushered into their first term. It will also mark 20 years of the country’s return to democratic rule.
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has released a line up of activities leading up to the inauguration ceremony and Democracy Day celebration, respectively. The Minister stressed that the Presidential inauguration ceremony will be ‘low-key’ and stated that other activities to commemorate the occasion kicked off on Monday, 20th May 2019 with a press conference where he made the announcement. The swearing-in ceremony of the President and Vice President will take place at the Eagle square, Abuja. The events marking the June 12 Democracy Day will kick off on 7th June with a Historical Exhibition in Arts, Pictures and Immersive Environment and run through 12th June 2019, on which there will be a parade at the Eagle Square and a Dinner and Gala night at the State House, to wrap up the event. It will be recalled that on 6th June 2018, President Buhari declared June 12 as the new National Democracy Day, to take effect from 2019. The Minister also disclosed that world leaders have been invited for the observance of the Democracy Day and declared the country safe for the celebration in spite of security challenges.
