Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shiites have continued to decry the Federal Government’s detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, against several court orders granting them bail. The group’s usual peaceful protests at the National Assembly took another turn on Tuesday, 9th July 2019), as the protesters clashed with Policemen and destroyed properties at the National Assembly, leaving some protesters and Policemen injured. Notwithstanding the arrest of members of the group, numbering about 40 by the Nigeria Police, another protest was staged barely two days later, at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja on Thursday, 11th July 2019. The protesters were soon dispersed by Policemen using teargas. In the process, some persons sustained injuries, while about 60 protesters were arrested by the Police. A similar protest held same day in Lagos State, with the protesters marching to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) office in Ikeja, bearing placards and chanting songs of freedom. Nigerians have called on the Federal Government to heed the group’s demands, to forestall further damage to properties and infliction of harm on innocent Nigerians, especially residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who bear the brunt of these protests. Members of the group who have been calling for the release of their leader since his arrest and detention in December 2015, have shown increased consistency in demanding for his release.
