INEC slates Kogi West Senate Election with State Governorship

On Monday, 21st October, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the re-run election for Kogi-West Senatorial District will hold Saturday, 16th November 2019 – the same day slated for the Governorship election in the State. It will be recalled that on 11th October 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld the judgment of the Kogi State National and State Assembly Election Petition tribunal, which nullified the election of Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ordered a re-run within ninety days from the day its judgment was delivered. Senator Melaye had been declared winner of the February 23 Senate election. His victory was challenged by Senator Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the grounds of irregularities, over voting and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The re-run election is expected to be seriously contested.
