Supreme Court affirms the Election of Ganduje, Tambuwal

On Monday, 20th January 2020, the Supreme Court in a much anticipated judgment, affirmed the election of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State in the governorship of 23rd March 2019 in the State. The Court dismissed the appeal by Abba Kabiru-Yusuf, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election for failure to demonstrate cogent reasons to set aside the respective judgments of the Kano State governorship election tribunal and the Court of Appeal, and for lacking merit. The Supreme Court also struck out a cross-appeal filed by Governor Ganduje. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Abdullahi Ganduje winner of the election after he scored a total of 1,033,695 votes with Kabiru-Yusuf in second place with a total of 1,024, 713 votes, following a supplementary election in the State.

The Supreme Court affirmed the election of the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal in a unanimous judgment and dismissed the appeal filed by Ahmed Aliyu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging Tambuwal’s election. The Court held that the appellants failed to prove allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act and issues of over voting.
